NV fanboys will always bring up the world dynamics and C&C. And if something doesn't work as intended it's "muh 18 months of development". It's not good and most people (not redditors) don't consider it to be such.

Milo's meant to not react to that, it's actually a typically masterful bit of design by the auteurs at Obsidian. It shows the NCR are stretched thin and that Milo's so deprived of resources and is so held back by bureaucracy that he hurrrrgh wuururrgh gughujgghgh

Note that my post was about the HL2 comparison specifically and why New Vegas looks worse than HL2. Note that i do not claim that FNV looks great, if anything compared to other games at its release date it does look dated, if nothing else.

That said, Stalker specifically also benefits from having its world made up of smaller segments (it doesn't have a huge overworld like FNV/F3, instead it uses smaller maps you switch between) and AFAIK does use some baked lighting (mainly for ambient occlusion). I think the maps in Stalker do not have as many objects as FNV/F3 too, but it has been a long time since i played Stalker so i might just misremembering.

However, objectively FO3 still has the best designed open-world in the franchise.
I was talking about how that thanks to Amazon Prime Gaming, I now have Fallout 3 GOTY on GoG without buying it. I was asked if I liked Fallout 3, to which I said I didn't. I was then asked why I'd want it.

My reply was basically because it has some decent locations for Real Time Settler in case I wanted to play around with that but didn't feel like doing another one in New Vegas. I also didn't really care enough about Fallout 3 to buy the GoG version. But I'll take it for free. Real Time Settler is a great example of how Bethesda can take a decent idea from a mod and just absolutely find a way to wreck it like they did with settlements in Fallout 4.

Its really well done and goes into detail about how to install the suggested mods and why you should install them

But now Im installing more mods outside this list and I have using MO2 and its by far the best mod manager I have ever used and vastly superior to Vortex when it comes to troubleshooting and the MO2 virtual file system

I like Vortex and I will still use it for some games if its recommended but MO2 is now my main manager

VNV extended includes some really buggy/bad/shit picture-in-picture sight mod, and you might want to skip that one. The sensitivity scaling is fucked up and jarring, and it has a variety of graphical glitches. Otherwise great and very stable modlist though, in a 120+ hour playthrough with all DLC I had maybe 3 crashes.

Thanks, any suggestions about unstable mods let me know and I will remove them.

Im not playing the game yet. I'm still researching and installing other mods and will probably start in 2-3 days so now is the perfect time to remove problematic mods

Im about 15-18 hours into F:NV and its been the incredible and predicted positive experience that I knew it was going to be

The mods I loaded from Viva NV and other additional mods seem to have created the ideal wasteland experience for me

And as usual I must talk about MO2 and how it helped with troubleshooting because you typically experience most mods conflicts in the first 2-4 hours and once you fix them the problem is resolved


Firstly I noticed immediately that Doc Mitchell had the pink mesh problems around his character and that was related to the Fallout Character Overhaul

So I did some troubleshooting from the mod Nexus page and everything seemed fine but then I realized I had made a mistake with this mod and I had installed a hotfix with the " Replace" option and not the " Merge" or " Rename "
Merge should always be used for hotfixes because it just replaces similar files which is what you want, Replace deletes all assets and just uses the new ones and that meant my mod obviously wasn't installed properly because you need the original mod files with the hotfix
I then rechecked about 3-4 other mods and reinstalled them with the " Merge"
That fixed my pink mesh problem. I then noticed I had a problem with circles in the sky and thats a known problem around Desert Natural Weathers and conflicts with other weather mods. But I was confused because the Desert Natural Weathers was the last ESM in right of MO2 but then I noticed that Realistic Wasteland Lighting was conflicting around meshes in the left side of MO2 so I just changed the order of Desert Natural Weathers on the left so it was lower than Realistic Wasteland Lighting and the problem was solved

And then Im using mods like World of Pain which adds lots of new and fun quests like Vault 40 and the Harder Barter Faster Stronger which makes the overall economy and resources much more difficult and Im spending lots of time finding resources and being selective about what I can sell

But great experience so far and modding has really improved the vanilla game

I just realized that when I played FNV vanilla years ago that my companion Veronica got killed (in the days when companions could actually die in games) before her lesbian drama story line kicked in so maybe I managed to avoid some big time cringe there. It was kind of cool though that it was the first time in years I let any companion die in a game and successfully resisted the urge of reloading a save to save them. "She died so bravely!" I thought as I stared at her corpse on the ground. Years earlier, I remember playing Dragon Wars and losing 2 long-time party members in the final battle with Namtar at the end and it was gratifying that I didn't reload a save as I watched the end cut scene (just a stationary graphic of Namtar falling into the pit) play out.

Veronica's lost love plot isn't uniquely cringe, it's about as bad as literally all her dialogue is (the classic trouble of 40~ year old male writers who never talk to people trying to write a 25~ year old woman and coming up with completely stupid shit no real person would ever say).

The weirdest part of it is that you can meet her lost love in Dead Money and there's no option to tell either of them about the other. They both opine to you about how much they miss each other and you just stand there with your impassive, unfeeling, "i am the protagonist" stare, neglecting to mention that they're only a few miles away from each other and you know both of their exact locations and could easily reunite them.

I have loaded an adult companion mod called Katie, she is lots of fun. You can give her drugs and alcohol and then you gain reputation points with her and additional sexual favours. She has some hilarious dialogue options :lol:

But she uses melee in combat so I will probably dump her for someone else later on but I have basically only reached Primm so its early days

By that time (and long after), I was sick and tired of games where deadly traps in games tended to be anything but deadly. I'm a big fan of fearing for your life if you open a trapped chest (mimics in DnD games were a favorite with me) or took a step in a mined area where it forces you to find a solution, if one is even available.

There was an extended companion mod for Veronica that gave her tons of new dialogue and options voiced by the original voice actress of FNV but I didn't dare play it.

You absolutely don't need mods to enjoy NV. Whenever I'm in the mood for another play through I dust off my xbox 360. The game is more enjoyable without the temptation to use mods.

My all-time favorite companion mod (and perhaps my favorite mod period) was RobCo Certified. Robots and cyborgs you could create from parts of Caesar (They Saved Caesar's Brain quest) and other custom robots were just so much more fun than human companions for me. The same author did a similar mod for Skyrim that almost makes me want to endure the tedium of Skyrim again to see if it's more bearable with mods.

There's an FNV mod that lets you pump your companions full of chems and go absolute murder-machine on your foes. I used it to pump my Caesar cyborg (using the mod mentioned above) and turned him against his own, including Legate Lanius. Fun stuff

Im about 45 hours into F:NV and its going really well

I loaded all the Viva FV mods and stability recommendations but then I also loaded about 25 additional mods and accepted that this could create some CTD because they outside the Viva list

And I was getting about 2-3 random CTD in a 3 hour session which is fine, it takes literally 30 seconds to reload the game in MO2 and I save often so I dont lose anything. But then on Sunday I went on a Bounty Hunter quest to the Fiend territory and the game started crashing every minute in one region. And this area is notoriously bad for CTD and its well known and there are lots of solutions to resolve it but as usual with troubleshooting and CTD one solution doesnt mean it will resolve your specific problem

So I decided to use MO2 to troubleshoot and the advantages of using multiple profiles, multiple profiles lets you disable mods and enable mods and it wont impact your main game

But before I started disabling mods in my troubleshooting MO2 profile I read a suggestion on Viva and the FNV performance guide and it was an .ini setting around the NV Tick Fix mod

So I made the change and guess what? No more crashes in the Fiend territory and I havent had one CTD since making that single .ini change which is about DirectX

I am amazed that a single .ini tick box could improve the overall stability so much, Im not complaining of course and Im sure I will still get CTD but its an interesting lesson around how sometimes CTD are not about particular mods you use but rather a specific setting or recommendation in a mod file

Moral of the story, always read your mod recommendations around performance and stability and how this type of mod can be configured
