Why do modern RPGs have 0% soul?

I know this is frowned upon by people who only post about politics.
You keep repeating this, but I've got 8 times more posts in GRPG than you do, my misguided black friend.

Sure, you've got more posts in jRPG, but then again, that's nothing to be proud of.
10x more total posts though, I'm catching up. Better make sure to post more about RPGs or I'll be lording it over you in the future buddy.

Now remind me, how many posts do I have in the politics forum?

Ah yes, Legacy of the Crusader. Perfect UI (that only took 1/4 of the screen, no worries) and precursor of the brown-and-vomit color palette later associated with Fallout: New Vegas. How could I omit such an inspiring example!

As Plato firmly stated and Aristotle agreed, politics is the sole obligatory concern of every worthy citizen of the polis.

So, your lack of interest in the matter does you no favors.

Diablo had much less obtrusive AI, which Lionhart tried to copy (red and blue balls), but failed. Why it failed you ask? Because structurally and mechanically it was a game that was at war with itself. It wanted to be a serious RPG like Baldur's Gate and Fallout (hence to log on the right and myriad of obscure options, sometimes connected with various non-combat skills), but after production time and budget cuts, it became a less competent follower of the RPG-lite school of Diablo.

All new games: look the same, play the same, tell the same story. Devs betray any idea of innovation after first 3 anonymous Steam complaints. This is Industry wide and exceptions are very rare

State of RPG and video games craftsmanship is below pathetic, in 2023. ESPECIALLY! in the West Games from 5 years, let alone 20 years ago, look like art from lost high-tech civilization

Let's discuss what are the reasons why Pillars of Eternity will never be what Baldur's Gate was. Why with more money, more manpower, 10x better technology and 10x more time, modern Game Devs can't make anything worth remembering
You know them by their fruits.

People without souls cannot evince products with souls.

Behind you.
The problem is they can. Gaming audiences, like all broad audiences, have ridiculously short memories and are very forgiving.
I would agree, except we're also watching a lot of these games flop and developers pop like soap bubbles in a sand storm. Now, I guess we could say this is GNU Chess level of thinking in advance, where the customers are weighing every single possible option at this singular point in time and deciding not to buy garbage. It's also entirely possible we've hit the point where publishers spend so much on games that they've crossed the line to where there aren't enough forgetful or forgiving sods for them to make a profit. Either one of those could be true.

Someone wrote a bible about the best modern gaming principles some years ago, during the '00s I think. Since then, people in the gaming industry, in particular the marketing people an the stakeholders, have a blind faith in this bible.

In the '00s they believed that following this bible they would have made a lot of money. They laughed to anyone that said anything different and there were a lot of purges of any possible heresy from the industry. In the '20s they still believe in this bible, even if they don't know anymore why. The forgot or never know, because they are too young, that there was a time in the past when no bible existed.

If you apply the principles written in this bible there are interesting consequences: the majority of past and historical game genres cannot exist anymore. Every game becomes the same game of the same genre: a linear third person over-the-shoulder shooter with QTE.

This phenomenon appears everywhere including and especially cinema, just watched Total Recall and a recent action movie and the difference is baffling.

Hero's Adventure: Road to Passion is recent stuff that has charm. But, the trend is simple. People without talent are making games and these games are published. In 90s people were BOTH skilled engineers (even if self-educated), and they were making art as games because they wanted to make something GREAT, and they were making what THEY wanted to play.

Obviously there is a massive difference when bunch of crazies make a high quality bug free game, and CA who got an order to get salary for doing 8 hour work and make game named Pharaoh.
(I actually can't remember if Pharaoh was cracked. THAT meh game is Pharaoh.)

There are enjoyable games that are both fun and art (and cracked or on gog/Steam DRM free), but it's like Russian cinematography in Stalinist era. They were somewhat decent movies... hidden in loads of unwatchable stuff.

Now that would be an RPG with soul. Beyond the stranglehold that Blackrock and Vanguard has on video games the deracinated urban global bugman, having no soul and no ties to the past or any form of real culture, can't create anything soulful. A game about a very real conflict still fresh in memory would entail a people creating interactive media about themselves, for themselves, by themselves, and for this reason the end product would be an authentic cultural item, or a game with soul.

The topic of real-world struggle alone, if properly researched by developers, would prevent them having reddit moments or putting muscular lesbians into the game. Anything would do really, you could make a CRPG about America's invasion and occupation of Iraq and just through subject matter alone the tone would have to shift away from the quirky big chungus writing.

Games based on real-world conflicts, especially the recent ones, are always going to be a propaganda, and there's not much of artistic merits in propaganda.
I'd rather want to developers to use these themes and create something impactful and beautiful, like Vandal Hearts developers did (and also Tactics Ogre-Battle/Final Fantasy Tactics devs as well).
