What game are you wasting time on?

Got bored of D:OS for now. Don't know if I'll return to it any time soon. Second time I've dropped this game. I might just move on to the sequel.

In the meantime I'm playing Blackguards, shovelware-ish tactical RPG based on The Dark Eye PnP game.

I'm having fun. Combat is enjoyable, but it is also quite literally the ONLY thing the game has to offer - and the game is supposedly around 40 hours long. I'm craving some exploration. Not sure if I'll see it through to the end, either.

Returned to the first RPG I ever tried (and didn't like): Champions of Krynn. Really fucking painful at first, but after a while I got used to things and it's been all right. Combat isn't great - most encounters just require disabling enemies before they do they same to the PCs and there's really no tactical depth to any of it. It's been a long time since I read any Dragonlance books but my impression was that dragons were to be taken seriously, but this game drops multiple dragons at once on low level PCs who then swat them like flies. I'm only past Jelek, though, so maybe things get more interesting later. In any case, the game has been more engaging than many of the newer games I've tried in the past few months. My progress is very slow, but I keep coming back to it every day. Must be that old school charm... (I still kinda adore the setting, too. I'd love a game set right after the Cataclysm.) This game, along with Stonekeep, made me ignore most older RPGs, but now I'm curious.

I'm also replaying Underrail (no trading, fists+versatility, very fun), and played through My Brother Rabbit but it was too easy and too cute.

Blackguards, shovelware-ish

so this is what it has come to
By shovelware I mean: low-budget, unambitious, some jank, frequently on sale for less than $5, appears in bundles often and is neither critically acclaimed nor a big seller. The game itself is decent, I don't mean to denigrate it.

Second time I've dropped this game. I might just move on to the sequel.
If you didn't like the first, you might not like the sequel.
Makes sense. But I'm a big believer in giving things a try, when it comes to RPGs, anyway.

For the record, I do actually like DOS, just don't love it.

Replaying Fallout New Vegas for fourth time. But I have played through DLCs only once before, so paying extra attention to them. I didn't remember how frustrating gameplaywise Dead Money DLC really was, I remembered it be somewhat annoying, but holymoly and fucking hell. Luckily story and characters were awesome. And Honest Hearts DLC: its literally one cool character. Not much else going on in that one. Now off to other DLCs and more...

Shovelware means shit, and Blackguards is far from shit.

Anyway. I beat Dragon Quest VII on Nintendo 3DS. A chill experience, in a traditional jrpg way. No bullshittery, just tradition up the wazoo.

In Mortal Online 2, our guild Alliance went to clear the highest level boss of the game. Shit's not that easy, though. We found our enemies there, and a 20ish vs 20ish fight ensued by the entrance. We were victorious, but basically all our horses died. Our healers did great, and the front liners did even better. With that out of the way, we entered the dungeon. They came back again, before we hit the boss room. Chaos ensued, and we won again, this time at around 30 vs 30. People were swinging their weapons all over the place. There's no auto attacking here. It's all manual, and everyone were hitting both friend and foe. For the third time, they came back with 60 men, and we had to find a choke point, and killed them in a very sneaky way. We killed them when they tried passing a bridge. Shoved many off it, to their doom. The thing is that you lose everything when you die, so we had a loot fest. Lastly, we defeated the boss, and got enough money to be able to besiege two enemy factions. The most scary part was escorting the person that we gave all the loot to on the way back, but the way back went better than we thought. The faction we thought with before decided not to attack a fourth time.

By that definition Skyrim and GTA 5 are shovelware. I think my definition fits better. The use of the word "shovel" implies bundle fodder to me
all games are bundle fodder eventually, especially in the current market. the game pass fodder games are going to be the new xbox live arcade type stuff too.

Finished Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009).

Pros: It makes you feel like the goddamn Batman.
Cons: Detective Mode is anything but a Detective Mode; boss fights are lame and require you to repeat the same basic routine from three to infinity times depending on the boss and how good you are at the game; exploration is limited to Riddler Challenges, of which the majority consist of picking up a glowing question mark, and what's left consist of "riddles" that are as much of a riddle as asking Google who's the current POTUS.

But I enjoyed it a lot.

If that isn't a relatable feeling regarding D:OS...I have dropped it like three or four times now. It's such a slog. I just started Baldur's Gate 1 and said screw it. Though, I will return to it to complete it because the encounters are fun.

Blackguards for what I understand is liked around here. Which is funny, because I got it for free from some bundle or some bonus deal or whatever. And it turns out combat rocks. Who'da thunk? :incline:

I just completed Pillars of Eternity 1&2 and I had a great time, it took me about 170 hours to complete both games

Obsidian was really successful in creating a new IP with lore and certain mechanics. The best parts of these games was the depth and choices of the main narrative and the strategic nature of hard battles that only exist in similar party based RPG. I created full reviews of these games in the official White March thread

Now Im going to play Shadowrun Returns, I have never played this franchise before but it looks good?

Skip the first game and go directly to Dragonfall and then Hong Kong

Installed the Onealex mod (based on GWX 3.0) for Silent Hunter III because I wanted to see what the current state of the art in WWII sub simulations was. Ultimately it's too hardcore for me but I wish I could use whatever widescreen mod they're using in the vanilla game. I'm afraid my only experiences with completing sub sims were Silent Service and Red Storm Rising on my old C64 (both superb, immersive sims for their time and probably still playable today) but Onealex goes waaaaay beyond that. Still, I'd love to get back into the genre if I can get the base game looking pretty as the modern SH3 mods without changing beginner level mechanics. The level of detail is astounding.

Uncharted 4. Enjoyable as both an interactive movie and as a shooter where you get to be a gun-toting Errol Flynn, but with some big flaws. It doesn't make as much use of its new mechanics as I would have liked (the way Jak 2 did), and it can be stale in places. Still, at least you get to beat up IDtenT in the end.

I bought it alongside the last of us, I'll play it, but not right now. I'm not normally in the mood to play one interactive movie right after another.

Playing some Star Trek: Bridge Commander and the Elite Force: Voyager - Virtual Voyager mode, which is really fun.
Bridge Commander does have some issues, Louis_Cypher did a more in depth analysis in the Star Trek Games thread, but I recommend it to Trekkie nerds. A decent Star Trek story and campaign. However, the real cream of the game is the "Quick Battle" mode, especially if you play with the Kobayashi Maru mod. Incredibly fun, you can engage in fleet based combat, beware that there are only so much ships the engine can handle without lagging, frame drops and crashes. You can create your very own unique battles and scenarios. With DS9 FX you can even visit the station itself AND go through the Bajoran Wormhole and into the Gamma Quadrant. Awesome!
Ships include those of the Jem'Hadar, Cardassian, Romulan, a goddamn BORG CUBE, you name it.
The Borg Cube is a monstrosity, be aware that you need an entire fleet of strong ships (Sovereign, Akira, Nebula, Galaxy, Excalibur, Klingon Negh'Var) to even hope to destroy one. Even so, you will still lose ships in the battle, hopefully not your ship!

On the internet, writing shit posts.
Earth 2150 is actually better than Earth 2160. After you add some reshading patches to make it not look and run like garbage it's actually a pretty decent game that doesn't reek of incompetence. The UI also slightly better, amazingly and unlike 2140 doesn't have a sudden saxophone ruining the atmosphere.
What's weird though is despite being called a Trilogy I don't have Lost Souls, and the only reason why I have Moon Project is because I got it years ago from a random drop. I don't know what's up with that. I think its because it was an indie gala key drop or something? I dunno, Steam is weird sometimes.

I'm enjoying the shit out of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
I haven't played Deus Ex in 5 years, but it reminds me so much of it. Being able to fuck around in a level, multiple paths, enemies that act like they are alive having actual conversations, the level of interactivity, it's all so good. With an ENB the game looks killer.

It's hard to believe the Deus Ex formula is barely used anymore, because it works so well. When you give players a big playground full of mechanics and little filler, people will love it.

The only real bad thing that could be said about Human Revolution is the dumb plot about cyborg racism.
