What game are you wasting time on?

Playing ToEE, definitely awesome, but I don't know how far I am ingame. I think my party is level 4. I got bored in Hommlet and went straight to the Moathouse and cleared it out in an hour. Non Co8 because I am lame.

Playing Baldur's Gate for the first time (yeah, I'm discovering this genre)... I hate it already! My god, what an uninspired game, almost like an Oblivion from more civilized times.

How exactly? The writing is far better. The story is miles above anything Bethesda could ever achive. The combat is actual stat based. It uses and incorporates actual lore from the setting...

I could go on and on....

I know, I need to get past the Friendly Arm Inn to criticize the game, but I already want to uninstall it :/ Should I keep going or play some other games like TMC or Icewind Dale?

And of course Baldur's Gate is much better than Oblivion, just because the 1990s were much better times than the 2000s.

Baldur's Gate is... whatever. I personally did not like the stories and can't remember much about them, besides a few high points. I enjoyed the combat and a few of the characters. Icewind Dale is more for dungeon-romping, through and through, and arguably worth playing just for the artwork alone.

As much as I like BG1, I can totally understand why people might call the first few hours uninspired. Most of the encounters are just against dudes with regular weapons, and unless you know what you're doing, your only real "tactical" options are probably going to be Imoen's Wand of Magic Missiles, a couple of Larloch's Minor Drains, and Jaheira's Entangle spell (though this one is really good). Somebody new to this might not realize that BG1 is all about disabling spells that allow your characters to attack bad dudes unmolested (i.e. Sleep, Entangle, Horror, Hold, Stinking Cloud), at least in the early game.

The game really starts going in stride after you finish the Nashkel mines and start exploring around for the bandit camp. That's when you start to run into more enemy parties and monsters with more abilities and you actually have a decent repertoire of weapons, spells, items, and abilities. Though I can understand that, in this day and age, with tons of classics/indies/forgotten gems, that grinning and bearing it for hours, without any guarantee of payoff, might be pretty unpalatable.

Icewind Dale was fun, but in retrospect, it really is a lot shoddier designed than BG. Too many dungeons consist of nothing but "big room of monsters", and often those monsters have no abilities but bog standard melee and inflated HP. A lot of the boss fights are pretty lame as well. One is against a powerful breed of demon, that's only strengths lie in being immune to +1 or less weapons at a time when you don't have many of them, and high "combat stats" like HP, armor class, damage bonus, etc. It doesn't compare favorably to BG1 bosses/set piece encounters and even more unfavorably to BG2's excellent encounter ensemble (dig that alliteration, yo).

All the talk of snes got me to re-install zsnes eventually so.
I played FF V for a day or so, got bored and replayed FF VI over a few days, then played it with a low level group and kicked the shit out of Kefka again. Ugh yeah, makes sense to do that with a lev 12 parties. Now playing Chrono Trigger again, started yesterday, at Black Omen ATM. Read a bunch of translation notes and kind of lost interest. They just completely raped the story. RAPED it. I had no idea Frog was actually a badass motherfucker, instead of a total ninny retard. Way to go Nintendon't of America.

I read an interview with Ted Woosley and he constantly had to shorten his translations to the point of sometimes affecting the meaning and cutting out stuff. Yes he was one of the first to make adaptations instead of translating literally, but I think what you're commenting up might have been due to the cartridge limits.

Yeah, I've read some interviews too, and some of his creative licences are understandable, specially in say FF VI, but him turning Frog into a moppet was all him, not some memory issue or censorship.

Currently replaying Mass Effect 1. Being a little surprised that I'm actually enjoying it as well. Skipping all the lame extra moonbuggy planet shit while sticking to the main plot seems to be working out well.

Actually made a little txt file on (already released) games I defenitely want to (re)play and find out that, once again, I really don't have the time to get through such an immense list. Shit.

Checking out Hard Reset right now. It's fun, it has an 80's cyberpunk feel and art design, and it's pretty difficult and unforgiving.
I approve

Finished Chrono Trigger not long after I made my last post. Was going to get Ayla her super badass fists again, but instead just kicked the shit out of Lavos, did +new game and watched the team comments.

Just finished playing through Tales of Phantasia for the first time. Got interrupted the previous try and forgot about it. Got as far as getting Aska that time I think. That was almost 10 years ago. Well, the dungeon design is better than a lot of other JRPGs, and there are actually puzzles. By comparison, uuuugh, CT dungeons are total shit and forget about puzzles. Anyway. Dhaos was fucking annoying, final form, but dude got his ass kicked. I forgot to bring hourglasses to make him freeze in vulnerable mode, but it worked out thanks to superduper berserker bow, gremlin and a shit load of teleport spam or something.

Now trying to work up the interest to finish Star Ocean for the first time, but I think I'll ignore that and replay BoF 1 and 2.

Playing V:TMB for the first time, just hit the second hub. Good shit. I'm usually instantly turned off by all vampire-related things but this game well-made enough to make me forget it.

Hopefully you're playing Malkavian, nothing quite like a first playthrough Malk to tumble dry your brain. Never experienced anything like it in a game, before or after.

A lot of other people pooh-pooh the idea, but my first run Malkalvian bros know what deal is.

I did Ventrue, followed by Malkavian.

I'm not sure whether my enjoyment of the game would have been greater as Malkavian first, or I would've given up in fustration halfway through. But Malkavian VtMB needs to be experienced Emotionally Engaged™.

The bizarreness is what gets you involved, you really feel like you are a mad person in a world that doesn't make sense when you go into it this way. Doing Malk on a secondary run means that sure, you get the hints as to what the Malkavian dialogue insight portends, but the poetry of the insanity and sheer uncomfortableness outweighs the simple recognition that the character has referenced a point in the game without the character's first hand knowledge.

I chose Toreador : I red a lot of that "don't choose Malkavian for your first playthrough." Until now, what I'm the most impressed with is the feeling that whatever you're doing - quest or sidequest alike - you end up being someone's pawn. I absolutely didn't see that goddamn Voerman twist coming, even if it was heavily hinted through the whole questline. Makes me wonder what else am I'm missing/oblivious to.
