Another preview: http://www.dualshockers.com/2016/03/23/obsidians-tyranny-preview-branching-paths/

Only one battle was shown, against the Scarlet Chorus, but it will be familiar to anyone who has played Pillars of Eternity. Your four player party can be controlled individually in a real time pause system.

Skills are on a cooldown, so there are no replenishing mana bars, and players can craft spells, or utilize different types of armaments thanks to the class-less system. Something new Tyranny introduces, is teaming up with a companion for a unique skill accessible by their teamwork. The one shown involved Kade, the main character, throwing up his archer partner into the air to strike targets from afar.

Told you it'd be more casual than PoE. Weird that this is the only preview that mentioned them, though. Maybe the WoW generation takes cooldowns for granted.

Bah. I was thinking "modern" would mean full per encounter and dropping per rest. That, combined with the lower game length, had me assuming there would be quite few combat encounters that are so far apart that going in with a full arsenal every time would feel fine.

Oh well, just hope the CDs aren't so short/low-impact that I'm tempted to cycle through every character constantly so I can hit abilities as soon as the CD is over.

Just turn on the AI so companions use abilities automatically. :)

Dragon Age Origins? Fuck that, that game had terrible combat and encounters. Cooldowns were half the reason.

You'd think after the last few years of role playing games you'd realize that the particulars of a system make no difference at all to how tactical it is.

Imitating DA2 feels pretty pointless. But hey, it's their game. Maybe they liked that one.

If they're so pointless that AI back to backing them at all times is acceptable, they shouldn't be there.

And I hope this doesn't end up like DA:I*, where leaving default AI on and ordering all to attack one target that isn't an enemy groups tank > let AI use abilities on CD > you use your character's in the same way will win fights on max (or even normal) difficulty.

*I've not played it. I have watched a few videos and am therefore 100% certain I am right, do not dispute.

While some people can be zealously bashing cooldowns for being are a" bad" thing, they didnt said anything about exacly as Pillers. Maybe this Real Time Combat could allow kitting and removing the other "restrictions" and brings RTS skills usefull again. Which could be more satisfying in the end.

Funny that if you see Related ("Owners of this game also own") tab, you can see unreleased VR games and Valve games as well as Paradox games. I guess a Valve-related person or two counted in the sample.

2012:
A man can dream, I dream a day where Obsidian can fly away from publishers and show what incline cRPG goodness they could do if they were free! Look to Dragon Age 2, this filthy abomination with terrible combat, please Obsidian, save us!

2016:
Obsidian: "We are doing Dragon Age with trannies in it."
