I just hope that if they do reach the goal they make both characters as different as they are saying they will be, I hate when gender/race choices only affect attributes, combat effectiveness and two or three obscure dialog lines.
The first two things shouldn't be affected at all and as for the latter, I actually liked how dialogue for male/female PCs in Divinity 2 was exactly the same. It was accidentally progressive ('cept for having flirt lines with female npcs but none for male). I was disappointed when they ruined that with Flames of Vengeance.

I don think there should be any usual differences in attributes or combat effectiveness.
Its one trope that could be easily subverted in such a setting with all the high technology remnants around.

Fallout way is the best way.

But I don't want progressiveness, I want variety. It was cool talking to Myron as a male and knowing him as a bored know-it-all nerd, then coming back as a female and seeing hm turn into a horny teenager who couldn't talk to me without almost creaming his pants. It made him feel more like a real person, who treats different people differently. There's also the gangsters in New Reno who will laugh at a girl wanting to join. And if those things annoyed or offended you, you could always blow their faces off with a pancor jackhammer.

You want girls to be judged, like everybody else, based on their traits in videgames too? Is it not enough that they suffer through that ordeal in real life? You bastard.

Seriously? That sounds like something that'd come straight out of the BSN.

What, a game in a post-singularity setting without the option to play as a mechanical lifeform, advanced bioconstruct or a body stealing AI? I am shocked.

Mind = Blown. :?

Feminists who do want girls and boys to be exactly the same should get out of the closet and accept their transexuality already.

Girls are girls, boys are boys. Feminism should be about freely allowing girls to be girls, develop as a woman, and be respected as a woman, not about allowing, and expecting, girls to be men. That's vastly more opressive than the so called 'patriarchy' is.

I think its the damn opposite of progressive when women are no different than men - if a female protagonist isn't who she is as a woman, with all the traits her gender implies, she's a man. And that's exactly what a strong female protagonist is in video games, a man with a vagina.

But do they have a good combat stretch goal?

Also, when are we going to get realistic male characters? You know, ones that can't just run around killing hundreds of people?

That simply depends on how much filler combat there is.
Yeah, but generally, I'm just saying that isn't it kinda silly to talk about how men and women in games are the same when these games don't even convey the reality of life of vast majority of males in developed/developing countries?

Well, here - it isnt about playing a "girl". Just like it wasnt in Fallout.
No need to be transexual or manly at all - because of it.
You certainly werent in Fallout.

This is far future, post technological singularity setting.
Human body modification is one of the regularly manifesting things.
The player may be a member of some community that was modified eon ago, still carrying those traits, but without being overpowered. Just - different.
But internally, on cellular level, rather then on the outside.

A PC can be some modified android or clone who woke up without memory.
Or someone waking up from cryogenic stasis.

You can even start equally weak.
and then choose, gain and improve attributes, abilities and skills you choose - through gameplay.

Of course, if you can choose what you want in char gen then you can pick attributes as you please., in the first place.

Then again, even if you start with gender differences there is enough in setting to provide you with modifications.
Run into a specific nano swarm and it could modify or remake you. Achieve alterations to attributes through quests and subquests. By discovering old technology, lost knowledge, powerful "friends".
Or achieve it through equipment, items, artifacts, "drugs"..... And it can all have pros and cons included.
With further C&C.

Loads of options, really.

-
besides, we already know there wont be filler combat and grinding.

Using "Torment" so much for promotion of their game even if they think of it as a successor is tasteless.

A sequel would be TNO running in Blood War unleashing Torment Power by pressing triangle.
Numenera is just a game "in the spirit of". Placing that word in there seems a bit cheap, in hyping the game/marketing sense.

What if you knew the difference between using the word "Torment" for marketing and not using it was one million dollars or more of Kickstarter funds? This isn't an excess - they need to do this for the project to succeed. You know that people are that shallow.

They have all the big names to throw around. Overusing MCA as a hook is getting old, but saying he'll write something or just hang around at least would be honest, as we know that gettin right people into making a game lends results (err, sometimes).

You know that people are that shallow.

I seriously don't see a problem. How many Star Trek shows have there been without Captain Kirk in them?

Be whatever the hell you want but a game should not come with inherent penalties for female characters. They're not woman-playing simulators.

The really obvious flaw of your perspective is that it assumes "male" is the default. Oh shit, somebody didn't go to college.

Anyway, a male without any special "man traits" is a woman with a cock. I guess. Or a chicken with a dick? Ok, a John Deere Model 9430 tractor with a penis.
