Top cRPG to be a cRPG veteran?

everyone, no excuse, should play. The mandatory
This sounds like homework in school.

to be considered a cRPG veteran.
Is this why we're playing games? To impress strangers on a forum? Cult-like behavior. :smug:

I missed some games back in the days, or because I was hooked by another game. For instance, I played Diablo 1, but during Diablo 2, I played Deus Ex. I never played Planescape: Torment but I did play System Shock 2. I didn't play Might & Magic, but I played Heroes of Might & Magic. I already caught up with some games over the years :salute:

I'm sorry, what the fuck is going on in here? The Codex published a new top RPGs list literally just a week ago. I don't think there's an institutional definition of a "cRPG veteran" and what qualifies one to collect the associated pension, but if you want a checklist of what RPGs the Codex collectively thinks genre fans should all play, just skim the first 10 entries on there, since that's what people actually voted for.

Now maybe OP simply didn't see it, but I swear some of you just can't stop bullet-pointing your favourite games every five minutes. Turns out playing too many RPGs leads to Excel addiction.

Hahaha so what? This list is more selective... the "must have, no excuse" to play, what a veteran cRPG would play. I doubt the recommendation would be DE unless trolls.

Game like Disc Elysiuw is above Icewind Dale or The Temple of Elemental Evil for Christ’s sake or above of Neverwinter Nights, Pathfinder: Kingmaker and The Witcher? Why DE is in the list in the first place?. Wasn't Gary Gygax (The creator of D&D and RPG) that said without combat is not RPG? :philosoraptor:

When it comes to D&D:

Neverwinter if you have no knowledge of D&D
Icewind Dales, a dive into the overrated Baldur's Gate, then Temple of Elemental Evil to see what it's supposed to look like in crpg format
Planescape to see something different

SPECIAL system and Fallout 1&2 (and Tactics) to experience the peak of innovation era in crpg

Arcanum to experience stories considered to be the Conspiracy theorists Paradise.. and to see why wearing a fedora and speaking loudly against Gnomes can lock a thread, but you can be freely racist to others (true story)

Deus Ex (Human Revolution ONLY after you've played the OG) and Gothic 1&2 to witness the only successful 3D voiced protag games with immersion and depth

..FF7 to experience jrpg?

That's about it for the so-called "essence".

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Wasn't Gary Gygax (The creator of D&D and RPG) that said without combat is not RPG?
He didn't just create D&D, we were just talking about how he also played the game. So he may have said that. If he didn't, you should note that Sun Tzu said "without combat, it's probably not a war" which is along the same lines and brings us to veterans.

Top crpg to be a crpg veteran? There isn't any. Veteran is a place. A state of mind. It's a half-empty bottle of burbon on the floor, it's a five day growth of stubble on your chin. It's the smell of sweat and cheetos permeating your sleazy, one bedroom apartment. An old computer is still turned on with Windows XP loaded up, a battered dungeon masters guide as a mousepad. The long horrible work week is over, you think. Now begins the long, horrible weekend.

This weekend there will be nothing but Fallout 3 to keep you company. You'd much rather be with some better game, but you are bored and broke. You have a brief flash of hope, "Maybe it'll get better once I leave Megaton", but then you meet the guy on the outside who you just gave water asking for water. Again. Yet on you go. You paid for this crap so you are going to finish it. Just need to make it to the end, then you can get $50 worth of bitching out your system. Just. need. to. finish.

It seems so far away, and 3 Dog doesn't make it any easier. Taunting you as you go, following your footsteps and announcing your actions to the Capital Wasteland, but always about 3 quests behind.

Could you live this? Being a veteran isn't playing games from 20 years ago. It's not picking from a banquet of the best games. It's eating shit sandwiches and caviar alike! So you savor the caviar when it comes around again in 8 years!

You sound like a troll here. If you want to be "a cRPG veteran" then it stands to reason to play games people consider the best RPGs. The newest list has a plenty of classics and good RPGs.

The reason Disco Elysium is not considered a classic by me is because it needs more time to "withstand the test of time". Having said that, it deserves the spot on a list of top RPGs. If you have to ask why, then you obviously didn't play Planescape: Torment (the game Disco Elysium is the most reminiscent of and a longtime #1 of all top RPG lists).

Maybe you should play more RPGs first, before you start making judgements about things you clearly don't understand.

Dude is a visual novel, choose-your-own-adventure, NOT an RPG. Even if "withstand the test of time" it will still be a visual novel similar to Ian Livingstone, Steve Jackson books.

I declare Disco Elysium as Point and click adventure with skill checks

finishing old CRPGs doesn't make you a veteran, or hell it doesn't even make you an RPG enthusiast.

look at CRPG Addict, he's finished tons of classic RPGs by himself, without a guide, and he's a huge cuck who thinks Dragon Age: Inquisition is the pinnacle of RPGs and thinks old RPGs are "outdated".

Just play and finish the following:

* Dragon Age 2
* Descent to Undermountain
* Pools of Radiance 2
* Mass Effect Andromeda
* Lionheart

I guarantee you'll have the 1000 yard gaze of a true veteran at the end of that.

Okay, so what's a cRPG veteran?
Individuals who have engaged in Jagged Alliance 2 are avid gamers with impeccable taste. A veteran can recognize that Fallout 3 is Oblivion with Guns, Fallout New Vegas Oblivion with Guns and Skill Checks, Disco Elysium is a point-and-click adventure with Skill Checks, and Baldur's Gay is a Reddit Game designed to satisfy the needs of Reddit trannies.
