Welp, had to make an account over here since the Codex seems to have a huge Thief fanbase.
So, first of all, people who know me over at TTLG know I am a MASSIVE fan of Thief: The Dark Project. I even made fan missions for it. So much in fact that I dislike most of TMA and TDS even more (even if it has redeemable qualities). Yet I am very interested in this reboot. Crazy right?

I think the game looks very good, I love this medieval shit and it suits the game much more than all the victorian stuff in Thief 2, so it's always good in my book. It also looks grim and I like that. I'm not so much sold on the gameplay aspect of it since you have all this consoletard retardedness in it, but if you can deactivate it like it was the case with Dishonored, then it's okay. I'd take information of combat with a grain of salt, we know nothing of it and I'd like to remind you that you could kill guards with little to no trouble in the previous games, even on Expert. The story so far sounds ridiculously close to Dishonored's though, and honestly the fact that magic and undead are toned-down is a massive disappointment. We also had a discussion on TTLG regarding the stealth system and I seriously hope it's not some binary shit, this would be unacceptable in a game such as Thief.

It looks more interesting than the lockpicking mini-game in Thief 1 and 2. There's an in-depth discussion about this several pages ago, and I agree that a in-depth minigame done right would be an improvement.

Yes, I know, I'm grasping at straws by pointing out that part in the new Thief game. Goes to show just how much of a disaster this is going to be, and I'm trying to be impartial.

It could possibly be beneficial if it's done RT, meaning that you can get caught while picking a lock. If it pauses the game around you, then, you know...

Precisely. ;-)

And before I forget, Eric Brosius didn't just compose the music in the original Thief games, he was also the Lead Audio Designer. He was as pivotal to the success and awesomeness of the Thief series, as his wife Teri was to the System Shock games on the same counts, because she voiced SHODAN. And that's before the fact is brought up that Teri also did voice AND design work in Thief Gold... and Thief 2 IIRC.

EDIT: Remember, the new Thief game has neither of them on board. Try making System Shock 3 without Teri voicing SHODAN. See what happens. This is the same thing.

The Dark Mod has a good lockpicking "minigame" that is basically the same lockpick mechanic of Thief 1 and 2 with a little addition.

I'm sorry, but that article just destroyed any hope I had for this game (which was almost zero anyway).

but if you can deactivate it like it was the case with Dishonored, then it's okay.

How about activating stuff like proper lighting, sound, AI and new Garrett not being an AssCreed clone?

Bro there's no such thing as deactivating dumbing down when the whole game is designed around it.
When they will slap health regen in there you will tell me about how you deactivate that.
Or when they will inevitably slap assassination missions - deactivate that shit.

Deactivate retard friendly level design in Dishonored where you can just teleport through the game.

Deactivate a lockpicking minigame straight from Oblivion

In retrospect, we should have seen this coming. This is definitely karma for kickstarter. I shudder to think what's going to happen if Arma 3 turns out to not be a bug-ridden mess with a terrible campaign. Thankfully, I don't think there's anything left to defile after Thief, now that Fargo holds the Torment trademark. I think we'll come to appreciate that move of his a lot more in the coming days.

Anyway, read the article, took note of the highlights. This new Thief game has 4 points that look promising and interesting: Modern-day graphics, an interesting-looking lockpicking mini-game, smoke arrows and close combat that's a little more than spamming the attack button while circle-strafing.

Meanwhile the new Thief game kills off pretty much everything else good about Thief. I wouldn't give a single fuck if this was a new IP like Dishonored, but trying to pass this off as anything related to Thief is an insult. The Focus system sounds like crap, and while buying new and improved equipment doesn't sound that bad, upgrading skills sure doesn't. We don't want QTEs, we don't want "awesome features" that were already available in the original Thief games, we don't want parkour-style timed sequences to emphasise how stealthy Garrett is. The only thing special about Garrett was that he could melt into the shadows, otherwise he was just a clever man in decent physical shape with a nice assortment of tools. He's not fucking Batman, no matter how much this game tries to make him so.

Asking Eidos to change the game into a non-related IP is futile, as they've clearly spent a shitload of cash into making this game, including having fashun gais create his suit in real life, and also crafting a compound bow.

If anything, the good part is that they claim to have good AI that actually understands the level layout. Of course, it doesn't matter much if you can effortlessly ninja-kill three guards at a time, but it's something.

We know nothing about the sound aspect. Even if Eric Brosius isn't on board, there's no way to tell if it's going to be shit or not. There's also no way to tell if the AI is dumb as fuck or smart with just pictures. I'd like more contrasted lighting though, and yes Garrett looks like shit.
I highly doubt we'll get assassination missions, what's the point of calling the game Thief if we have some? Also, we don't know anything about health regen. Dishonored didn't have any, so I'm hoping Thief won't have any either.

I still think the screenshots look nice - and on their own they say shit about the actual gameplay.

But this magazine scans...

Holy character rape Batman. In the original games, Garrett takes dangerous and difficult jobs because of the promise of getting enough money so he retire and not have to do it anymore. Now he's derptastic "HEY LOOK AT ME I'M THE GREATEST THIEF THERE EVER WAS IMMA STEAL SOME SHIT AND THEN BURN IT CUZ IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY"

That's depth, man. Character is not good these days if he doesn't have some psychological issues.

IT'S CALLED THIEF YOU IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What if my thief doesn't want to thief? :(

It's going to be shit. Eidos doesn't give crap about sound quality in their games. And they are not going to for a reason like - we are making a game to make money not to make it good.

Do you think any of the people they are aiming the game at know how Thief sounded?
Exactly - that's why it's a reboot.

There's also no way to tell if the AI is dumb as fuck or smart with just pictures. I'd like more contrasted lighting though, and yes Garrett looks like shit.

It looks like you haven't played many modern games. Bro to sell millions you need to make a game about KILLING SHIT. Kids don't want to spend hours sneaking through a maze without any helpers to guide them. It's boring to the target audience. They want to kill shit. Eidos doesn't care about what 100k nerds think when they can sell a game to 10 mil of AssCreed fans.

Dishonored didn't need health regen because it was already a game about cheats. Every special ability you had was a huge cheat so it was all about selecting how you want to kill some random enemy.

We need an emissary, preferably one of the locals. Kind of how CrustyBot was for BSN.

This is the least believable of their claims.

Well, it shouldn't be that hard to improve Thief's fairly basic AI. Still, it won't matter how clever it is if the rest of the game doesn't make use of its capabilities. Makes no difference how smart a guard is if you can stealth-kill him at any time by pressing the awesome button.

Thankfully, I don't think there's anything left to defile after Thief.

EA acquires full System Shock rights.

Eh, they've failed with Dead Space already, don't see why they'd want to brave that river again.

Terri also wrote a lot for all 3 Thief games, mainly for movies in between levels. I believe she wrote the whole scene where Garrett delivers the eye to Constantine (which is fucking great), and I know she wrote the "beware the dawn of the metal age" line. She also publicly stated that the plot of Thief 3 was written in such a way as to try to make sure that if anybody did a Thief 4 they would have to use a new thief, not Garrett. If only reboots weren't a thing.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if they do have a decent sound design. It's not that hard to make, really.

I have, I even worked on one (it was an indie game, but still) but thanks for asking. You could play Dishonored without buying anything or even using anything (I think you had to use Blink once, but that's about it) while ghosting without KOing anyone, and it was a lot more fun this way even if full killing is strangely soothing too. I know that if I ever play Thief, I'll never use any of the crap they mention (Focus, guiding beacons and other stuff) and you can be assured I will never fight.
