But did you also run at an enemy too fast and bounce right the fuck off him like a tennis ball?
Ah yes...that's one of the bloody annoyances that I forgot to mention.

Funniest thing in the game was probably RFS-81's dry humour when defeating undead and golems: "Lifeforms exterminated!".

Some more thoughts:

Wiz8 is definitely the easiest of the Wizardries and should not be hard to play Iron Man. Too much combat and respawns make you overleveled. The only generic enemies I feared after Arnika Road were fishmen, Death Rays and Ensnaring Spiders.
Apart from them the most troublesome enemies were those with Psi attacks, especially Turncoat.

The Valkyries were a liability against these enemies, since they have low resistance to Mental magic. Combined with never finding anything better than Dread Spear, the Valks were often more effective with Bows with a 5-6 Kill chance. The Lord and Samurai were more solid. I dunno, maybe Polearms skill is a trap in Wiz 8.

I never got a Triple Crossbow, since my Gadgeteer never knew how to. And I never robbed the whole Bank, since I wanted to avoid bloodshed, so didn't get that berserker sword. I guess these weapons would have made it even easier.

The AI was weird. Even when a full member of the T'Rang, some areas were still off limits. At the same time you could loot chests from right under their owers' noses. I guess I could have just lock picked the main vault in the bank without Lorrac (I wonder who Carrol was?) or the guard reacting, but I never tried.

The whole bank is just the vaults and you can get there discreetly.
That's actually the only way to do it.
The robbery thing is a trap.

Open the chests in the tavern, the shop and the weapon shop to get key cards, use the bank's elevator, it's as simple as that.
You might need high level knock knock/lockpicking for other vaults.

Polearm skills is far from a trap, short range melee weapons are.
You don't hit as hard but you actually use most if not all of you hits and swings which makes up for that.

The Berserker sword sucks, unless you're in over your head and can't manage roaming monsters, in which case the sword will just obliterate things.
Otherwise, you're locked out of ranged weapons and the short range means you won't use a third of your swings, it's lame, except for a rogue since he can't use extended weapons anyway and is not that good with ranged weapons either or a samurai since you can use magic when you get nothing to hit on short range.

As for the T'Rangs, you might be an ally but the locked areas are sensible and don't offer much, it's actually for Umpani quest-line.
There's a trick to use that area as a shortcut though, using the combat mode twice with fast enough reflexes.

There are two elevators and I assume two vaults in the bank; the main one where various NPCs have their storage boxes or individual vaults, and the one that is reached from the jail. I only robber the latter.

As for weapons and such, I didn't agonize much about it since the game was not very difficult after the start.

And you can rob both but I guess you'd have to start with the vault ones, the second one might trigger an alarm, I'm not sure.
Anyway, you can "visit" the personnal vaults anytime you like, use the keycards and "train" your lockpicking skills.

And make a new friend...

I'm kidding, don't train you lockpicking skills, it takes forever, just use a high level knock knock.

Give Lorrac a Keycard and she'll let you waltz right in.

From the guy who did rebalance mods for Wiz 6, 7, and 8, plus a recreation of 6 in 7's engine:

dfortate - Game Reviews (Yesterday at 11:26 pm)

For those that hate Wizardry 8's "level scaling", I'm working on a mod to remove that. The monster difficulty will be largely based on the area you are in, similar to Wizardry 6 and 7. Particular monsters will not increase in level as you do. Hopefully this will make Wizardry 8 enjoyable for those that don't like level scaling! I am modding the vanilla (unmodified) version so you will be able to experience the game without my other modifications.

His main mod lowers resists on random spawns while beefing up bosses and adding a couple. Also adds more throwing weapons, etc...

Nope, that's Wiz7 with an imported party from 6 wielding all the endgame weapons that you can bring along.

That's not true, the stun rod is OP and can even be imported from 7 should you find one.

Heh, been there, done that. I found Wiz8 significantly much easier. The problem with the Wiz7 scenario is that you need hybrids to wield those weapons, which means your magic skills in particular will suffer due to slower leveling and fewer skill points.

Evil characters eh? So aliens are evil. And the music is why I put on some mp3 thrash metal. My biggest edit would be changing that god awful music.

I started playing Wizardry 1 again. This game is still incredibly fun considering it's over 40 years old. It's definitely better than some later games like Dragon Quest. Some of the map design is absolutely devilish, though, considering they expected you to chart your path on graph paper. The one-way secret wall leading into a teleporter on the first level is a real "fuck you" to beginning players. The very first secret wall you find, and it'll confuse you then probably lead you to death.

I kinda love how that first level is like four little mazes in one with a little hint of everything in it, starting with that My First Dungeon section in the southwest where it's just nice long hallways leading to big obvious rooms. It was probably a smart thing to introduce some of the confusing aspects like dark zones and teleporters on floor 1, where you still have a decent chance of finding your way back before you get in too deep.
