The Risen 2 Thread

Not sure what happened but I've been playing the game for about 6 hours with maxed settings and a tweaked ini file with no performance issues at all when it's suddenly just taken a massive shit. It's now stuttering, including the music skipping, and the mouse cursor lags. I'm in the same area I've been in the whole time, nothing has changed at all, so I have no idea wtf happened. Has anyone else seen the performance just randomly drop to shit?

Maybe you don't have enough hdd space for system? The game quicksaves and autosaves each time on new slot. After ~30h I've got like 10 GB of saves.

Yep, the first thing any sane person should do is to disable autosaves, this requires minor config tweaking, but gives so much relief!

Already disabled autosaves via my tweaked ini. Also, I'm a neat freak about my saves, HDD space is not an issue, I prune my R2 saves daily.

Dont understand why people blame themselves for buying day one and encountering bugs, you dont get this on console games and its same price, you all got way too tolerant with that shit. Would it be some gigantic open world with revolutionary gameplay i would agree and accept a few bugs , but there , they serve us the exact same gameplay since gothic 1.
Talking of bugs you can encounter a few game breaking ones, keep multiple saves as if you dont do the things exactly like its scripted you willl miss dilaogues or part of the quests. I should mention the hilarious pathing bugs, patty falling from ship etc.. etc..Some quest are really poorly done, for example sabotaging the canon, i thought first knocking out the guards and sabotaging, but that was a dumb brute solution and the guard one shot me , i must have done something wrong. So i went to a spoiler site and well... my dumb solution was the only one, no stealth , no dialogue, nothing , disapointing to say the least.
Whats even more weird is combat is usually both trivial and tedious except this very one guard who one shot me.
The setting and humor saves it , but if you have patience (wich i dont ) , just wait for an heavily patched platinum version for 50% on steam.

Just out of curiosity, why aren't you playing this on a console then? Or better yet, playing Fable on your xbox right now? I heard it doesn't require patience. I do agree with waiting a year and getting the full game properly patched with all of the cut content/DLC's for a fraction of the cost. This is the first time in many years that I've bought day-one, but it was Piranha Bytes, I couldn't help it because I wanted to play an actual video game.

I do not have the patience to wait more for a game, not lacking patience for playing a game you misunderstand me. I enjoyed very much the gothic games and risen thus i wanted it day one. As for playing fable on xbox frankly the difference between those type of games become thin, very thin, one is left smashing button with a slighlty more mature setting, the other is left button smashing+ farting on people heads. If you enjoy risen 2 you will probably enjoy the fable games too but its not politically correct to say so on the codex. Now that i think about it , setting isnt much more mature in risen 2 , its very like disney's caribean pirates. Not a bad thing per se but id like less mainstream games sometimes.

So, the Treasure Island DLC, from what I understand it adds a new island, is it worth it though? I mean, if I were going to buy the game, is the DLC really worth an extra $10 or whatever it is? Unless it turns out it's absolutely awesome, I doubt I'll pay for that.

It's cool and fairly substantial, but I wouldn't pay $10 extra for it. I have it because I preordered at green man gaming for $40, but I"m certainly not bothering with the other DLC.

Any news on a patch? I mean just the fact that the Fool's Juices don't show up in the inventory is annoying me to no end.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Risen 2 has overall a very solid exploration component, which is and has always been the greatest stength of PB games (even though the previous ones had better combat, with the exception of Gothic 3), and I enjoy it immensely mostly for that reason.
Hand-crafted world, areas that are too hard for your character where you have to return much later, permanent stat-raising plants... those are all elements that make up a PB game, and they're in Risen 2 too.

Risen 2 is a typical PB game and satisfies my explorefaggotry much much more than Skyrim did, for example. PB are still the kings of explorefag games.

Am I right that stat-raising plants raise stats by 1 and potions made from these plants by 2? If so, maybe for the first time it might be worth it not to hoard the plants...

That is correct. However Fool's Juice, made from Jester's Cap, doesn't even seem to exist in the game because if you make them they don't show up in your inventory. As for the others I'd say it's worth it if you are going the voodoo route, you still get double the stats and you might find a whole lot of them.

Too bad the towns are so cramped... Caldera looks like it came out from a Dragon Age game. In Risen, etc every NPC had his house and you could go everywhere, now many just sit around all day and don't go to sleep because they don't have a bed. A shame, really.

Thanks! I am going the voodoo route so I'm considering this.

Unrelated: thank god that winning the shooting minigame against Morgan is unnecessary to get him...

What's the problem? In Gothic 2 NotR you only got +3. In this you get +2 to all stats in that category, and each have 3 skills so yeah.

It actually adds up. Without voodoo I just ate them for +1 bonuses, but they were good sources of just-having-enough-skill-points a number of times.

Risen 1's port town wasn't very big either, if you add up all the inquisition towns in R2 it is far larger. That said, I do think Caldera was a big disappointment - they should have cut out the boring crap that was the Isle of the Dead and flesh out the town more, but alas, it's like every RPG writer feels the need to work in some weird equivalent of a classical Hollywood narrative with the bangs and flashes.

My second playthrough isn't as exciting because now I know that spamming LMB works for a lot of animals, who seem to be designed to behave more like R1 animals but just periodically lobotomize themselves. Really hope PB get to patch the game at least once, but that may not be the case given it probably will sell just as little as all other PB titles.

Ok, strange, figured out my performance issue, it's my mouse of all things. If I move my mouse at all, even at the start menu, the game stutters like mad. If I use the keyboard, no problems at all, so fucking weird especially considering it was working fine for the first couple of days. My mouse doesn't even have bloated software crap. Argh, guess I'll have to try to use the shitty fucking controller.

Finally finished the game. It took about 30 hours -- I probably cut down a fair bit by using fast travel a lot on return trips to islands, but I'm fairly sure that I did everything and explored everywhere.

It passes my basic litmus test for being a good game in that I was sad when it ended, but it definitely has more annoying design decisions and ear-flicks than most other PB games. Melee combat is an exercise in frustration until you get really good at it and learn to use your companions as meat shields, at which point it becomes less than trivial. I took the voodoo path so I didn't use muskets much. Once I actually started using the voodoo mechanics I found they were quite entertaining, and honestly pretty overpowered.

It's a bit buggy, though not horribly so. Hopefully it will get ironed out with a patch quickly. A couple of quests were not very well thought out. I actually managed to break the plot quest in Maracai Bay and had to start the whole area over. Also, fuck those mini-games.

Still, the exploration is great fun, the writing is tolerable, and it still has that undefinable PB atmosphere. I'd give it an 8/10, with the caveat that I'm kind of a sucker for anything PB makes.

I'm a voodoo guy with 4 Toughness. I found both parts for the 30-100 spade and I have currently (with the legendary item) 55 of the appropriate skill. To forge this weapon I'd have to raise Toughness twice (already have the +1 legendary item). Would you say it's worth it or should I concentrate on Cunning / Voodoo?

edit: it felt very nice when I found that legendary item in Antigua's
warehouse

In case you mean you figured out Corrientes true identity early: it doesn't really __break__ the quest. You simply have to kill him and the other guys and you'll get the artifact and the blood juice to walk through the barrier. This way you can still finish the game perfectly fine. But I agree that the "solution" is a bit borked and doesn't seem properly fleshed out.

I finished the game with 8 10 8 8 4 stats (including the item bonuses) and 15k Glory left over. You have plenty of Glory to get anything you want, it's just a matter of timing. If you have thievery at 70 (with items and potions), I'd go for toughness.
EDIT: Wait, wait, why do you need toughness? Don't you need 6 in blades to reforge swords?
