I asked myself that question because most people say "it's what Doom was supposed to be". They are probably dissing Doom 3 with that, but Doom 3, Doom 4 or even Doom 2 don't even feel like Doom 1 did. If anything, Doom 4 feels like Quake 2 more than anything else.
Because the new game is always the best.

I like Razorfist but he's not very critical or thoughtful or anything. Just a fun guy with good metal intros.

High verbal ability but not a profound intelligence. Kind like that thing Lyric Suite was talking about. I don't necessarily dislike his videos but don't expect any deep criticism or insight. I enjoy his metal write ups the most but i usually just watch them out of nostalgia.

Exactly. It's not offensive in its stupidity or anything so why not.
Except he loved the new Duke Nukem for some reason I can't comprehend. The machoisms on display were fun but the game was fucking wooden.

Anyway, I downloaded the Doot demo to see for myself, only had a few mins to play. Set everything to low cuz I don't care to fiddle with the settings when I aint got the time. I'll try to get it to look prettier later if it even works.

First impressions:
- I turned everything off except for HUD in the Game settings without even reading what it does, so I get no glowing monsters
- you can't turn off motion blur only set it to low
What the fuck? I can't play this fucking game like this. I fucking hate motion blur it makes me want to throw up, it makes me physically repulsed by the game, makes me feel uneasy like something's wrong with the game, I can't see shit when I'm turning around what the fuck this is the worst shit ever. Who thought it was a good idea to make you unable to see anything while turning around in a fast FPS? This alone might be a reason I won't be playing the game, it's making me sick.

- the FOV seems somewhat low, Ill try to see if it's adjustable
- honestly, I thought I'd be surprised by how good the game actually is when everybody's praising it to high heavens but no, it felt flat to me. I started shooting things and kept shooting things while annoyed by the motion blur and then I kept shooting things. I don't feel anything while playing this game. I'm only a few mins in, like the second outdoor area but while I wasn't bored, I wasn't excited or entertained. The glory kills do nothing for me, maybe cuz I've seen them in all the youtube vids or maybe because they suck ass but I just press a butan and something awesome happens.

- The movement felt a little "fat" or unresponsive at first but I got used to it.
- Started on Ultra-Violence or whatever was the hardest diff I found, got killed once in the first room for some reason that I didn't understand but that was all, otherwise it's been a cakewalk even while feeling sick and blind from the motionblur.

- exactly as I had expected, there's not enough enemies, you gotta keep running over the huge map to reach some imp or zombie and shotgun them in the face, then run again to the next one, it felt empty and the teleports/spawns suck shit compared to the enemies being normally placed on the map from the start

- the graphics are kinda ok, the weapon models are weirdly huge as seen in the videos they really feel stupid
- I didn't notice any music so far so that sucks
- the gore is muddy shit but maybe it's the low settings I'm using. Anyway, I don't really care for this, the last gore that felt good to me was probably Soldier of Fortune, now it's all flashy and cartoonish. Point me to a game with good gore, please!

I'll finish the demo today but I really honestly don't understand why everybody keeps saying how it's a return to form for Doom. I liked Quake 4 better so far. Maybe I just haven't been playing enough recent shitgames to appreciate this amazing violent thrill-ride.

EDIT: Why in the shit the shotguns in these games have the range of a turbodweeb's katana? Aren't shotguns used for hunting or something? Aren't you supposed to be hitting stuff from more than 5 meters away? It really goes hand in hand with the enemies having more health, too. You can't hit shit and when you do nothing happens. Awesome.

Quake 4 was a top-tier FPS compared to this garbage.
I'm not an expert or anything but after being mildly disappointed with Doom 3 (because there was barely anything to do in it) I enjoyed Quake 4. More shooting, nice graphics, the weapons felt nice. I don't know why I haven't replayed it, maybe it wasn't all that great but I think it was a proper shooter. What's the consensus on it here?

It wasn't particularly inspired, but it didn't give me such stench of DOG FOOD as Doom 4 does. Or rather, how do I put it... games like Doom 4 make me feel like a tribesman who's being bribed with shiny doodads, and I just want to scalp the smug motherfucker who's dangling them in front of my face.

All i remember from Quake 4 was that it was as linear as Doom 3 but with slightly faster movement and better combat. I wasn't particularly impressed if i have to be honest.

Might have something to do with the word "Doom" in the title.

Stop embarrassing yourself.

True embarrassment is putting Doom 4 above Quake 4.
Why? Because its new? Quake 4 is ireedeemable garbage, slow with weak wapons and boring enemies with CoD 4 inspired MARTINEZ GO THERE DO THAT story. People only remember it because the stroggification scene, otherwise it would just blend into one pulp with Doom 3. At least Prey had portals and verticality.

Quake 4 was superior to Doom 3. It wasn't all covered in darkness, the weapons felt better, there was higher fidelity to the graphics. It felt faithful to Quake 2 universe as well.

Its enemies and world felt like they belonged together, even if they were generic. The "soldier in futuristic war" angle worked fine... it certainly worked better than whatever the fuck world Doom 4 is trying to do with its boring arenas and mind-numbingly cliche "hell" theme.

Now, at this point, I actually lean toward rating Doom 3 as being a better game than Doom 4. It wasn't a Doom game either, but at least it tried to have a world, a vision, to be -something-. And since I rate Quake 4 above Doom 3... therefore I rate it FAR above Doom 4.

I remember it for utilizing the Doom 3 engine for actually good shooting instead of few jump scares. Prey had boring as shit weapons and boring everything.

EDIT: yeah and it wasn't fucking dark all the time

Prey had a mind-blowing opening, which was completely front-loaded, and then the momentum ran into a brick wall as you had to solve retarded puzzles, one after another.

Might be a question that was already answered multiple times, but does anyone know the story behind ID leaving the cool as fuck atmosphere and themes of Q1 for the "humaneety at war with alien robots from spacee hurrrr" of Q2 and beyond?

Lack of Sandy Peterson and Romero? The former is a huge Lovecraft fan and Romero is well Romero.

I think it also has to do with them chaning the medieval theme of the game at the last minute. It was going to be Lovecraft through and through from start to finish. I wonder if the appearance of gameslike Hexen and Heretic made them change their minds.

What makes you think so, son?
Were you around in the late 90's and early 2000's to experience the greatness that was quake 2 multiplayer? It was easily the most popular and funnest FPS online until UT and CounterStrike came along. Unfortunately Mplayer was becoming too popular for it's own good being 100% free to use along with streaming, camwhoring and other garbage and it was eventually bought out by Gamespy in 2001 and went to shit. Quake 3 was alright but i didn't like it as much, by that time i was already burnt out from playing too much Quake 2 and even more so Counter Strike.

Anyways, i'm not looking to argue with you bro, like i said in my previous post: Rocket Arena and 20vs20 CTF was by far the most fun i ever had in any online shooter and took some degree of skill to play at a high level, if you were there to experience it yourself than you would have a better understanding of where i'm coming from. 1997-2003 to me was one of the best era's of online shooters esp if you were 13 to 17 years old at the time.
