A lot of asset re-use and worst boss runs I ever endured, I can tell you that much.
Nah, that's ER.
ER? Look dude, all I know is that I still have nightmares from running to the blue smelter demon and Lud & Zallen boss fights. Not a bad game, but certainly the worst out of the 3 DS imo.
Those 2 are in optional areas of the game, in DLC ones especially. Designed from the start to be difficult. I agree that the blue smelter paths are very annoying to get through but the 2 cats area is very open and you can summon to distract the reindeers.

You don't have to summon anything, you can just keep running, and running for 4 minutes every time you wipe in a boss fight isn't difficult to do, it's just annoying and frustrating.

They're annoying to go through but not nightmare inducing. And you have options for both cases to make the traversal easier.

Frigid Outskirts is not difficult. It's simply obnoxious, and it all has to do with the fact that the cats are so fucking far away from the coffin. I timed it while not fighting any enemies, light rolling, wearing the Cloranthy Ring +1, and darting straight to the cats with the optimal path. It took four minutes and fifty-six seconds. Spending five whole minutes running to a copy/pasted boss that there clearly weren't meant to be two of is absolutely terrible, and makes it the worst area in the DaS series. The Loyce Greatsword is pretty good, but apart from that, there's absolutely no reason to even consider going there.

I'll repeat, it's not a matter of difficulty, running forward and dodging when the enemies try to ram you isn’t that hard to do.

A whole lot. A setup like this is useful for putting a big dent in a boss, but that's about it. In NG+ it might be useful, but that's about it.

52 minutes and 5 seconds of the deepest Dark Souls 2 lore.

As it turns out the eye you get in the Ivory King DLC to see the invisible tiger boss lets you see the ghosts in the Shaded Woods.

Strap Yourselves In
Last time I played the boss run to Sir Alonne was far worse than the one to Blue Smelter because of how many enemies physically block your path and force you to clear them so you can run through. Lud and Zallen's boss run was quite bullshit but only because it takes so damn long to march over the entire area to get your next attempt in.

Talking about the runups, not the bosses, pay attention men.
Runs to the boss are only a problem if you keep dying to the boss. The first time you go, you are clearing out the areas, right? You aren't some dirty speedrunner are you?

In terms of difficulty, runback to Blue Smelter is easy as you can just run past everything. Won't get much of a chance to buff before entering the fog gate, but at least you don't have to kill the entire map. Gank squad run is much more annoying than this one.

Agreed on Allone and Luz + Zallen being massive pains in the ass, but the worse one for me is Ivory King even if that technically is not a runback, but having to do that fucking fight over and over again is terrible, especially since you can actually get fucked up by playing it too efficiently.

I found the gank squad easy because I just ran in circles until I could separate one and get free hits in. All you need is some patience really.

Fuck Ivory King.

Lud and Zallen are OK. Though I've never fought them on NG+, only NG where you can be strong enough to basically kill the first before the 2nd shows up. If that's not possible on later runs then I'd probably be pretty well screwed.

On the internet, writing shit posts.
I found that poison is really useful against gank squad. Poison in DS2 is not a joke and can actually deal some good damage, which lends itself well to a hit and run playstyle.
Normally you won't do much hit and run over the course of the game, but it's required against the gank squad because of that damned havel NPC. So you smack one with a poison manslayer (what I used) until the poison procs, run away, repeat.

I think I finished off the havel with poison knives because fuck getting close to that guy.

Lud and Zallen are much harder because of their constant leaps, self-heal and the fact your weapons break faster. They have so much health that unless you're using a lot of spells, have a lot of backup weapons or repair powder, you'll break your weapons during the fight.
I'm not a fan of them. It doesn't help that as a reward you'll get a mediocre sword you'll probably never use.

For gank squad I just shoot them with a bow, 4 arrows is enough to proc the poison. Having that poison mist hex makes things even easier. Just make sure to play the Benny Hill theme in the background.

weapons break faster
Weird, I've never had a weapon break fighting them but then again I always leave them next to last before Ivory King and keep a brightbug just for them. Fighting both at the same time is a pain the ass so I try to go nuclear on the first one.
