That XP is sure worth it to drag a backstabbing cunt which is at the same time probably the worst character in the game (just thief) through half the game. XP being such a scarce resource in the game and all.

You must really hate Jan if you prefer looking at Yoshimos smug face for countless hours, knowing that he is Irenicus' puppet just waiting to betray you when you turn your back on him while enjoying his nonexistant combat prowess.

Yoshimo was intented to be a full-time party member, and Imoen was supposed to die. They changed it before release due to fan butthurt.

I wish they went with that they intented. Yoshimo can dual to fighter and would've been a very useful companion to have. I like Yoshimo.

I said until you get Imoen back.

But she has no banter.

So you like backstabbing scum but don't care for a backstabbing thief/mage.

I'm not sure I can quite comprehend the idea of people being outraged over the fate of Imoen to the point of badgering the developers into changing it.

It must've been the tiny bit of cleavage she shows in her BG1 portrait.

Present arguments as to why mage/thief isn't the most useless multiclass.

It's not Druid/xxx
Mislead + Backstab
Arcane magic

~ fin
Exactly. Anything with mage in their class description wins in this game. Aerie is second to power only to a sorcerer, provided you can wait for her to reach higher levels. Yoshimo would be useful, as his thief class has some interesting trap abilities, but he never levels up that far.

Yoshimo was trying to find out the fate of his sister Tamoko(Sarevok's lover, who you most probably killed in bg1) when he encountered Irenicus. I'm not sure exactly how it goes, but I think Yoshimo even agreed to the geas or something, probably out of revenge. You were supposed to break his geas and he would've joined you permanently.

Imagine the banters Yoshimo and Sarevok could've had.

Who gives a shit. You only have him until you get Imoen back from Spellhold. Might as well take Yoshimo along since he's temporary anyway, plus cool side story.

You replace Yoshimo with Imoen, a more useful character than Jan can ever be.

Mislead is pretty much an exploit. So you get a sucky multiclassed mage that doesn't progress for shit. And the only thing useful they get from the thief levels is a backstab multiplier which they can only use with mislead, since their thac0 is horrible. Sounds gr8

Yes I know they have skills, but so does a dualled thief/mage.
You don't need mislead to have an overpowered mage/thief. There was a spell combination involving spell immunities and protective spells (can't remember the names anymore, but Tactics mages used it a lot) that made a character practically immune to weapons. Kind of hilarious that those squishy mages could be tougher than warriors. With Jan, at least his thief skills were progressing, so you'd get a mage capable of using those overpowered traps eventually. With Imoen (and that other one) you got a non-specialist mage with some thief skills. Still a mage, but I'd take Aerie over both of them, since a mage/cleric was just insane in melee.

Merida, again
In a game like BG2, a thief/mage is pretty useless if you play it hardcore (increased difficulty settings, tactical mods, etc). Sure, you can use exploits like the Mislead shit, but most high level engagements will have a fucker or two dispelling illusions, so for most of the fight you will have the character as a backup archer and/or debuffer. Depends on how you play I guess, but for me a thief/mage is always a liability and only slightly better than a pure thief.
As for the game, Yoshi makes a kick ass F/T. Shame that he dies. He would have been awesome in ToB.

But that's the point of spell immunities: it made a mage's protections un-dispellable. I think only a thief "detect" ability could see through invisibilities in that case.

You could not add the head that comes with the free action effect, no? Then you could still be hasted while using it.

But I want to have my cake and eat it too. I really wish Free Action didn't block haste.

My team is as follows:

Kensage (PC)
Viconia
Jan
Edwin
Korgan

I'm debating getting a 6th character, but who...?

I could add Aerie and troll the shit out of her until she gets butthurt and wants to leave.

Anomen could work well with your party, especially after you turn him to chaotic neutral and as you said he tolerates Viccy better than Aerie. I prefer Anomen for banters but I guess another mage can be handy as well. You just need to tolerate with Aerie whining a lot, especially if you pursue romance with Viccy.

I like that unavoidable insta-death trap in Spellhold. It neatly messily solves the Imoen problem.

It's really ridiculous how powerful Spell Immunity: Choose Your Cheese is.

What are some silly combos? Abjuration vs a Demi-Lich, Divination + Mislead/Project Image, Evocation + Web (add in damaging AoEs for extra lulz).

What? Where? I just replayed Spellhold like a week ago and didn't encounter any unavoidable insta-death traps and I'm pretty sure I scouted every last nook and cranny.

If you want Imoen banter, just install the Imoen romance mod. It's 100% pure quality, high-brow writing, sophisticated cultural enjoyment for monocled gentlemen.

That's how Bioware got started down the EMOTIONAL ENGAGEMENT road. They didn't force it on players, just the few snippets of dialogue you talked with Imoen were enough to create passionate MY WAIFU-fans after BG1. Obviously, they larped deep connection with Imoen through the first game. Imoen, the original Tali.

Ah that, my brain didn't label that as a trap since nothing shows up when you search for traps no matter how high your skill. It's a great way to get rid of the golems at #6 that SCS adds, as I had no weapons capable of hurting them at that point. Rún through #1 to #4 but remember to close the doors behind you - the golems cannot open doors so they try to rush you the other way and get crushed.
