Arnd Vehling: How about doing a proper remake of System Shock I + II first.

OtherSide Entertainment: no. We have no interest in doing that. We made those games already. Very happy that Niteside is updating them for the fans though!

Stephen Kick: It's Night Dive Studios, not Niteside

 I think it's Chris Siegel manning their social media accounts. He's kind of a goofball sometimes.

BTW, poor Julien Pirou of MMX fame commented there too. Hope he lands on his feet now that Might & Magic is imploding.

Not really the same thing since the Guardian wasn't seemingly completely defeated in the first game you encountered him. He was designed as a multi-episode archvillain from the outset. SHODAN keeps getting vanquished and brought back via ass-pulls.

Still, they'll have to find a way to make due.

Otherside seem to be doing quite new things with the Underworld franchise (advanced physics- and ecology-based gameplay), while keeping around some of the touchstones from the series (like Tyball). It would be easy to imagine a similar treatment for System Shock.

Like it or not, Shodan is one of the identifiable things which makes SS a brand. If people think about SS, they probably think about Shodan. What Otherside can and will do with the property is the big question.

Having SHODAN again feels a bit lazy... like how Tim Cain said his Fallout 3 would move away from FEV, Mutants and the Brotherhood since that's story is already told... but Bethesda goes FALLOUT IS ABOUT KILLING SUPA MUNTANTOS ANDA DEAFICLAWS! STELL BE WITH YOU!

SHODAN is essential. I disagree with your comparison because FEV and Mutants are generic elements of that universe. SS without Shodan is like fallout without nuclear apocalipse.

The point is how will they bring her back. And where will it be set this time.

Well I hope they do an interview today or something and it's not just like, "HEY GUYS - SYSTEM SHOCK 3. Right, back to work"

But she wasn't exactly defeated in SS2.

Sure she was, "nah" guy blew her up.

Of course Rebecca decided to install some unknown military-grade implant in her body out of desperation. :P

I think that they should move away from SHODAN, it could only be a "cool" sidekick at this state of the narration, total eighties action movie cheese.

Codex 2013 Codex 2014 PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Grab the Codex by the pussy Serpent in the Staglands
Not really the same thing since the Guardian wasn't seemingly completely defeated in the first game you encountered him. He was designed as a multi-episode archvillain from the outset. SHODAN keeps getting vanquished and brought back via ass-pulls.

Still, they'll have to find a way to make due.

It can work.

OtherSide has issued a press release for System Shock 3.

“OtherSide Entertainment, the development studio behind the upcoming fantasy RPG Underworld Ascendant, is excited to officially announce development on System Shock 3, the sequel to the landmark System Shock series.

Last week, OtherSide posted a teaser website (www.othersidetease.com ) with cryptic lettering hinting at a new game. Internet hackers quickly cracked the site, prematurely revealing the game’s title. As part of the fun, series’ AI antagonist SHODAN appeared to mock the hackers with new taunts each day.

On the updated teaser site today, fans can hear popular voice actress Terri Brosius (System Shock 1 & 2, Dishonored) reprise her role as the voice of SHODAN and see an early peek at the evolving ‘next generation’ look of the character by artist Robb Waters.

Key members of the original System Shock and System Shock 2 teams will be part of the sequel. This includes Paul Neurath, who oversaw the original series’ development; Nate Wells, a senior artist on System Shock 2; and Waters, the lead concept artist of both original games.

The path to bring the System Shock franchise forward was long and winding. Several years back, OtherSide secured the exclusive IP rights to all future versions of the franchise. Only recently, through partnership with Night Dive Studios, who owns the System Shock trademark, did OtherSide get the rights to use the System Shock name for the sequel.

System Shock 3 is currently in the early concept stages of development.”

(And they filed RISE OF THE UNDERWORLD and UNDERWORLD trademarks in 2013, OTHERSIDE ENTERTAINMENT in 2014.)

Yeah, I know about those. That was a week after Neurath's interview where he pledged his loyalty to tablet development :P http://www.rpgcodex.net/article.php?id=9165

OtherSide now has an SS3 subforum: https://www.othersideentertainment.com/forum/index.php?board=13.0

Chris is on the loose:

Kickstarter- we don't know yet.

Complicated.

The VR question is just that. We are curious on where gamers are at when it comes to VR. Don't read too much into it.

EDIT:

Good Detective work. Cerulean Skies was the working name for what became Otherside Entertainment. ( A big no prize for the first person who figures out why that name

)

Paul has been working on getting these rights back for a long time prior however.

Don't anyone for a second expect complete crap or masterpiece which would actually be exciting. It will be a 7, maybe 7+ when GOTY'ed, same as that new deus ex shit.

The VR question is just that.
You don't ask things you have 0 interest about it. I'm glad I'm not expecting anything from this game, I'll not suffer if the games turns out to be shit. I don't expect anything from devs who does sequels of old games.

The immediate problem with bringing back SHODAN is finding a way out of that stupid Rebecca Siddons endgame reveal.
Why? It's the perfect setup for the perfect sequel:

An ancient evil is coming from beyond known space, and SHODAN is the only thing that can stop it. She wasn't actually evil, but she picked up the ancient evil's transmissions and it made her act crazy. But by taking over Rebecca, she became immune to the signal and now she can save the galaxy and you can romance her.

Also Diego was working for said ancient evil, and the plans for SHODAN were found in a temple of an ancient civilization that once tried to fight the ancient evil.

I think it would be a story that respects the originals, while at the same time expands the game's universe and introduces new themes like destiny and the conflict between good and evil.
P. good.

Urge to punch you in the face still haven't subsided.
What are the prerequisites for wielding and firing the Railgun in System Shock 1?

Finding it.
An empty weapon slot.
You needed IN<4 to fire it for the second time, though.
:troll:

However, EA required them to slap in, at the last minute, the Rebecca Simmons ending; it wasn’t part of the script as written, and it doesn’t fit into the prewritten narrative.
Ok, I admit I never had much love for LG's writing because they've always managed to fuck something up in their fluff (tech, atmosphere and most of the systems, OTOH have always been stellar) but now I HATE.

I hate so very much that someone from EA might in fact be experiencing spontaneous head combustion at this very moment.

Also,
That said, I’m glad Ken Levine isn’t going to go all Bioshock with this, and I’m not so happy that Warren Spector is a consultant; I wish Doug Church were involved.
Warren: Why can't I fight my way through a Thief mission?

Doug: Well you can... but you'd be playing your own game.

Doug- The game isn't about defeating the AI, they're foils like you
said... not the enemy. The AI could defeat you if we wanted it to. "I
think I hear something ... pause pause pause", "I better investigate
... pause pause pause..." "I guess it was rats ... Loud footsteps"

Doug: Thief is a game about territory. In each game the player and the
AI have their safe zones, but to get to the player's goal they need to
adjust that territory by changing the environment.

Warren: How is standing and waiting fun?

Doug: Make the player about to do something. Those moments are losing
someone and waiting for the AI to calm down, or waiting to bonk
someone on the head when they turn around. We have to provoke those
feelings in the player to make the game fun.

------------------

Warren: Why in Thief am I given so little information about the
mission and what I'm getting into?

Doug: We did it deliberately, not that it wasn't discussed endlessly.
There was lots of team chaos and discussion. We wanted Thief to be a
game that forces the user to dynamically react to what occurs. We
didn't want a lot of planning, we wanted it to be played on the fly.
Give the player enough information for an initial plan of attack.

Warren: (shakes his head) I want more direction on how big the mission
is. You never know how close you are to your goals or some general
difficulty information.

Warren: The other thing is that I'd be less upset if you'd replenished
my inventory. It's so inconsistently replenished that I don't know if
this is a time to use my fire arrows.

Doug: But that's not strategy... the player shouldn't know.

Warren: I just want informed choices..

Doug: We didn't want our players to hoard inventory... we wanted them
to run out and use them. In games like first person shooters,
inventory and powerups are very short term (like quake). That's true
of most games of that style. You don't get a large stream of powerups
and the play is determined by skill. This isn't final fantasy with
3000 healing potions.

Warren: (emphatically) But I have no way of knowing that the barracks
is full of guards!

Doug: SCOUT THE BARRACKS!

:what:
Warren: (emphatically) But I have no way of knowing that the barracks
is full of guards!
