March Update

Hello Hackers,

This month we will be focusing on two topics: Enemies and Environments!

Enemies
Last month we showed some of the proxy character models being made that allow our rigging and animation team at SuperGenius to start work before the final in-game models are finished. Here are some animations on the Execbot and GorillaTiger proxies.

Next, we have the proxy for the Shockbot, being put through some static poses to check for any areas that might be clipping through one another. This is to determine the range of motion of the hard surface joints before handing the proxy off to the animators so they will know the model will be flexible enough for them to work with.

Then we have a progress showcase for what in the original game is called the Flier-Bot, but is now being referred to in-house as the Shockdrone due to its prominent visual callback to the Shockbot security robot. Here's how it looked in the original game.

And here is Robb's reconception for the remake, followed by renders of the hi-poly model, low-poly model, UV maps, and a first pass at the texture maps in Substance Painter.

Rumor is, a certain Cortex Reaver will make an appearance next month...

Environment
Recently, a lot of heart has been put in building up the flight deck. Every little detail really brings the station to life.

:what::prosper::mhd:

Even if the Codex had held a fundraiser and bought its way into the "Design your own monster!"-reward tier, we couldn't have come up with anything remotely as adolescent and immersion-breaking. A plant dick on spider legs...

Well done, lads!
:excellent:

PS: Lemme guess: Its attack involves shooting white goo at you? I thought this was a horror game, not an absurdist action comedy in the tradition of Duke Nukem...
Probably a modernized take on or variant of
latest

It probably won't be spending its time in that erect pose anyway, so it will be less like a multiheaded-legged dick.

A missed opportunity:

According to CM from Discord, the goal is still release this year. Also there will be no April KS update in favor of a bigger May update.

SUPERJUMP:
Fans of the System Shock remake are excited to hear about any news of the project and you recently released a substantial game play demo, do you have any information you can share about how that development is going?

Stephen Kick:
Development is going exceptionally well, we’ve been in full production for the last few months and final art and animations are replacing our proxy assets. It’s exciting to see the progress come together so quickly. We’ve got some additional demos being prepared for the public and we’re looking forward to hearing some feedback!

It actually feels like they brought CGI cutscenes of the original to real-time.

Oh also there was dev stream showing latest version of the medical level and early versions of upper levels (plus shooting range in later part):

They said that there will be an update next week.

It's an updated version. The reviews are from the Kickstarter days and refer to the original Unity demo.

Just gave it a quick try and its pretty awful, alright. At best, I would call it "uninspired", which is rather damning for a System Shock game.

Off the top of my head:
- Close to zero environmental audio (if you turn the music down, with the exception of your own footsteps there will be dead silence for most of the demo)
- Bland music
- Enemy AI is basic at best
- Enemies have no personality (Compare that to the hybrids in Shock 2. Hell, even the freaking Zombies and Burricks in Thief had personality thanks to the audio!)
- Movement feels sluggish, makes 20 year old Dark Engine games feel smooth. Hell, even System Shock 1 with its clunky-as-all-hell interface played better.
- Horrid performance (The environments are literally 26 year old architecture - and all the tiny, enclosed spaces that go with it - with a bunch of post-processing slapped on top and it runs like absolute shit)
- I took an elevator up to D'Arcy's office, took a shortcut back down by jumping off a balcony and then realised that there was no way for me to get back up, since apparently the elevator button only goes one way and I couldn't get it back down.
- No gamma settings
- Combat feels awful, even combat in the Unity demo felt more visceral
- It still commits one of the Unity demo's cardinal sins: First person animations for fucking EVERYTHING! Take a story-relevant item? Enjoy the player admiring said item for 5 seconds. Want to heal yourself on a surgical unit? Enjoy the first person mini cutscene! Want to apply a freaking medpatch in the middle of a fight against multiple mutants? Yuup, there's a 3 second animation for that as well - EVERY SINGLE TIME. Every single time you're forced to watch the player open up his powder compact, remove the patch and then apply the patch to his arm, before the hitpoints start regenerating.
- It is ugly as sin. Again, I'm at something of a loss imagining who this is supposed to appeal to. If you want to go #fullretro, just play the original! Don't get me wrong, there are ugly as sin games that are absolutely brilliant. Take Dusk for example. But Dusk has a lot of things that more than make up for the crappy graphics: It has incredibly fun, smooth and addictive gameplay. It has a sense of humor. It has imaginative level design. Most of all, it has its own sense of identity, something that the derivative System Shock remake distinctly lacks.

The only thing I liked were the newly added Cyborg Surgeons, which look appropriately creepy.
