Nightdive reveals better-than-expected progress on its troubled System Shock remake
All looking good for September milestone.

Matt Wales

Developer Nightdive has offered backers of its beleaguered System Shock remake a fresh look at the progress being made toward the project's big September milestone, dubbed the Adventure Alpha.

Nightdive's September milestone was originally mooted in April, when the studio laid out plans to get its System Shock remake back on track. This came after the project was put on temporary hiatus at the start of the year, following massive feature creep and increasing concern from Kickstarter funders, who pledged over $1.3 million USD in 2016.

As part of its revised roadmap, Nightdive said that it expected to have a version of its System Shock remake, one that was fully playable "from start to finish" - minus the majority of art, ready for September. And now, in its latest Kickstarter post, the studio has offered a promising progress report on its highly anticipated September milestone.

jpg

System Shock's September milestone as original envisioned.
The Adventure Alpha, as its known, looks to be coming along well, and "will be reminiscent of the original game with the difficulty set to zero". Nightdive explains that its September build will enable players to "freely traverse Citadel Station without the presence of enemies, pick up items, listen to audio logs, read emails and complete the game's objectives from start to finish."

jpg

Now with added original textures.
However, there's one notable difference compared to the studio's original plan: instead of the textureless build it was expecting to deliver, Nightdive has managed to add in (as a temporary measure) textures from Looking Glass Technologies' original 1994 game, giving a much clearer visual indication of how the remake is shaping up.

jpg

The combination of which works surprisingly well.
And it looks surprisingly atmospheric, despite using textures that are now over 20 years old. "Not only will it make the Adventure Alpha more interesting," Nightdive explained, "but it will provide the team with a blueprint of how to approach updated art, lighting, level design, etc."

jpg

Some new on-ship art assets.
Some of that new art is also showcased in the studio's latest Kickstarter post, which highlights a few of the common items and elements found throughout the station - such as doors, lifts, and dermal patches - currently being revamped by the art team.

All this certainly suggests that good progress is now finally being made on the project, despite its many set-backs. And while Nightdive's System Shock remake is well past its originally anticipated 2017 release date, hopefully all goes well as it closes in on its revised 2020 launch.

Stephen (CEO)

A little sneaky saturday screenshot of original textures being used as placeholder :)

Jonathan (Art/Environments)

You do see some normals there, but they're derived from the grayscale combined values of the RGB textures

Basically they're not very good, but they work well enough as placeholders :)

Yeah this really needs to be an unlockable mode in the remake, if there's time to work on it.

Looks crispier than the Wolfenstein 3D sections of The New Order.

Jonathan (Art/Environments)

That's the aim! I took it upon myself to do this just because I love the original so much that I didn't feel I'd be doing it, or you, any justice by just leaving it as blocked out graybox.

Jonathan (Art/Environments)

I took a few minutes earlier and cleaned up some of the old textures to get rid of the built-in pixel lighting, too. Check out the result:

System Shock: Slavic Edition.

The fun thing is, despite the cheapo as fuck assets it's a pretty "realistic" representation of SS1's gameplay: a magnetic-skateboarding maniac running around with a energy shield and shooting, grenading and cutting into pieces everything that moves.

New Level Editor released for the original System Shock game

Modder ‘dertseha’ has released a brand new level editor for the classic System Shock game. According to the modder, the previous “deck” Editor from InkyBlackness reached its limits, so it was necessary to think of a brand new editor. This new editor is called HackEd and its initial version is available for download.

The new editor, in its initial v1.0.0 release, essentially copies the structure of the previous “deck” package from InkyBlackness and it allows for basic fan-mission editing. Moreover, the new project was also done with the following goals:

  • Much better UI/UX – This editor now supports Undo/Redo, as well as better UI-controls.
  • Integrate findings of the source release – Although hardly anything of this noticeable in this first release, the engine can do way more than what was originally reverse-engineered.
  • Support for future extensions to engines – With the begin of fan-based engine ports (e.g. Shockolate), as well as the upcoming “Source Port” from NDS, there will be extensions made that would have been tricky in the old editor.
Those interested can get the latest release of HackEd on GitHub.

Have fun!

Tomorrow's stream features the work I've been doing on L4, Storage. Check out a preview of what's to come

After:

Ignore any lighting glitches you see on the fluorescent lamps. Preview lighting is in effect and has shadow casting issues

If you've watched the L2/Research stream, you'll notice a consistent theme. I take any opportunity to improve the original level art because some of it is completely nonsensical. This room is a great example

I'm guessing he is referring to swapping the textures from the Deck 4 white lights to Deck 1 blue.

The original generally did that for medical rooms anyway.

But cyborg rooms were generally white - Even on Deck 1.

August Update

Hello backers! It’s Stephen from Nightdive with this month’s update.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This update is going to brief as we enter into the final stages of our “Adventure Alpha” milestone

We also have some exciting news to share - During Daniels stream the final BSP was carved out for the medical deck and the block-out was completed! System Shock is a massive game and now that the entirety of the original map has been translated into UE4 the real fun can begin!

While Daniel finished the blockout Jonathan has been busy placing the original (albeit updated) SS1 textures. Here are some comparisons with the original game.

I want to stress that these are the original textures and not the final art!

We also have a new artist joining our ranks! Please welcome Mathilde to our team - she’ll be helping populate Citadel Station with tile sets and props! Here’s her latest work:

Developed by Probe Entertainment and Iguana Entertainment and first released in 1998 for PlayStation, PC and Nintendo 64, Forsaken was a vision of a dystopian future where science has gone out of control. You must fight your way past automated defenses and the scum of the universe to find the treasures hidden on each level.

September Update

Hello backers! It’s Stephen from Nightdive with this month’s update.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We are busy at work getting the Adventure Alpha ready for the end of the month - a ton of final art will be making it into the game as well as the majority of levels using the updated original textures from System Shock.

So let’s get started! What update wouldn’t be complete without doors! Yes, doors - we hope you never tire of going through these majestic contraptions that connect the various spaces you will traverse while on Citadel Station!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We’ve made the audio logs tintable to provide some variation between the crew members.

Now let’s take a look at the updated SS1 textures within Unreal - again, these are not final, they are the original game textures updated with PBR properties! However, due to the positive feedback we received we will be using these textures for a “Retro Mode” that you’ll be able to access in the final release. Should this be a mode you have to unlock or should it be available from the offset? Please share your opinion with us in our Discord channel.

This has to be one of the best 180 i have ever seen. Not only you get source port which is apperently great as way to play original in non retarded hacky way but also you will get proper remaster which is actual remaster instead of port like every other remaster.

October Update

Hello backers! It’s Stephen from Nightdive with this month’s update.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We launched the Adventure last week to the first round of backers and so far the reception has been extremely positive! Our dedicated group of Adventurers helped us track down a number of issues such as malfunctioning doors, missing key cards, holes in the geometry that lead to the infinite void of space, etc! We’ve been hard at work patching up the issues and will be pushing a new build today and will be selecting more backers to join in! If you’re part of the Cortex Reaver or Citadel Crew Member tiers look out for an email with an invite into the Alpha!

Here’s a quick video showing the current state of the Alpha: https://youtu.be/TvzXqhh_ktQ

General Update:
As for a general update...we’ve got...you guessed it! MORE DOORS! Check out this energy grating (fancy space door) concepted by Robb Waters and the final working model in game:

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
They had a chance to reimagine how SS1 would look like if Doug Church and the rest of LGT were young and made it today. Instead they just did an embarrassing, ugly, unimaginative reskin or the original. I played the enhanced version of the original 2 years ago, it was fine. Nobody asked for this and if they did they are boring nostalgiafags.
