I am biased because I like Doom's movement, pacing and general gameplay more than anything, including Quake 1, so anything that feels like a luxurious, extensive and well-done total-conversion type of mod that is a full-fledged game but keeps to the core gameplay of Doom will always trump any other shooter out there.

Can't blame you for not liking Supplice a lot if you're not a "more of that Doom engine movement / gameplay" type of guy.

Morpheus Kitami I thought you were ignoring me you dumb fuck, actually I'm the only person on your ignore list. Did you specifically unignore me to rate my post and then put it back on? What an absolute autistic piece of work...

Yeah that's not worthy of a permaban even from the rest of your comments I saw in that thread.
You calling a number of other boomer shooters vaporware probably didn't help though. It seems like everyone of note in the boomer shooter scene is friends with everyone else so badmouthing other titles and devs probably won't endear you to anyone.

Almost every single thing I've called out as vaporware IS vaporware, though...

If that's what you're after then Supplice does that to a T, so fair enough. Feels more like Doom than Dark Forces did lol.

It's not bad, but I was always much more into Build Engine games so maybe my bias against how the weapons work and all that comes from there. If you ask me it didn't get much better than chucking bundles of dynamite in Blood and it had crouching and jumping. When it comes to the Doom experience I always liked the first game more than the sequel, and this is very Doom 2.

What did you think of the level design in Supplice? I want to know how it feels like to a Doom connoisseur.

Well, the demo is just 2 levels, but what was there was exceptional. The devs GET it. There's an uncanny thing about Doom engine maps. If you overdetail them, they lose their magic. See what Selaco does with the engine for example. You start getting caught up on sector geometry a lot, everything looks smaller than it should be... hard to put it in words, but it makes the product worse for me.

Supplice has just the magic mix of detail and open spaces to utilize the insane movement speeds of the engine, it's very well done, I think.

The maps are very intricate, the texturing and art design is flawless. There's a great mix of monster closets (rare), teleport-ins (relatively frequent) and pre-placed / roaming monsters. I enjoyed the demo a lot.

In a few spots, I was a bit lost because the second level was really massive and I wasn't sure what I opened with a few switches, but it wasn't to the point where I'd frown while looking.

And since a lot of those people seem to be made up of deranged and mentally ill people I guess it makes sense.

I was on a binge yesterday and made the mistake of playing that pos. The Doom engine wasn't made for Build Engine style levels, that's for damn sure, but Selaco wanted to be a cleaned up System Shock, without the blood, gore and cyborgs, as well as F.E.A.R. 2 but without the ghost sex and slowmotion. What the fuck were they thinking? Supplice > Selaco

I was wondering if it was just me or not, the switch and key hunting in the second level was some Stephen Hawking shit. Didn't make me mad or nothing, just broke the flow I had going.

Ah, using the old "make the main character a black woman/trans/gay/sissy" bait marketing trick to get people talking about your game. It's shameless. You know full well 90% of your audience consists of older white males, and the remaining are younger males or males of color. None of us find ugly chicks appealing, and few of your audience can relate to blacks. None can relate to women or otherwise don't want to, and especially cannot relate to a woman in a hectic boomer shooter. this genre is like the one sub-genre I don't see much room for female characters. A little, but really not much. Fuck off with this shit.

It's a small thing in the grand scheme of a video game that's about the gameplay, and under normal non-clown world circumstances I would not care, but in this day and age of shoving this shit down our throats constantly I almost want to dismiss the game outright. this is the fifth (? citadel/viscerafest/ion fury/selaco/supplice) boomer shooter revival now with a female lead, but at least those made the chicks cute or an alien chick or something unique and interesting...

Of all the 90s FPS, absolutely NONE had a female lead. For good reason. This is a male space, it's not her place. New age devs really do chug the soy.

Anyway, let the shitstorm commence. I would say hopefully it doesn't overshadow discussion about the game, but the trailer doesn't really show much beyond "it's a boomer shooter offering nothing new except a ugly black chick". Soo uh, nice work I guess?

it's a doom community project, the dev team is comprised of veteran doom modders (mainly creators of Back to Saturn X wad). So basically the killer feature is that the game was designed by the people who know well how Doom gameplay works.

Good. That is indeed valuable, good gameplay is the baseline expectation and if that is met, then the game for sure gets a pass or nod of approval...but that said, there are thousands of Doom mods...that are free. Including BTSX. Or the legendary Ashes: Afterglow. Why bother making this game that seemingly doesn't offer anything new or improve upon the old in any way? Gotta have at least one catch, it doesn't have to be huge, but a drill or a black chick ain't it.

The only way this is acceptable is if the protagonist says "Aww nah yoo dinnit!" and "Imma break my foot off in yo ass!" every five seconds.

EDIT: Oh well, at least there will be a load of drama when someone rips the weapon sprites.

Unreal and Trespasser. It's true that Unreal lets the player choose whether the character is a man or a woman, but it's a woman by default and some promotional materials and one of the jewel-case covers presents her as the protagonist.

I do agree with you, however.

Back to Saturn is one of the most boring, monotonous and overrated wads ever. I don't care about the game, but I really wouldn't equate authorship of that wad with good understanding of Doom's gameplay.

idk. It's not a monstrosity like Sunlust, yes, but as a casual doom player i thought it was good.

The chicks in Unreal (and UT) were hot though, and so were the men. Very fappable material, so Epic could be forgiven.

Wasn't impressed by the demo, but the release currently on Steam is really good, one of the better throwback shooters I've played.

You can easily ignore the story, but if you want to engage with it, the worldbuilding is not bad. You find all kinds of chatlogs and emails between people, and there's a very very clear Marathon inspiration (you're being led by a moody AI, and trying to activate a second, potentially less stable AI). The downside is that all the people in the chatlogs are annoying as fuck and talk and act like Californian hipsters. The upside is that you're playing as a new arrival to the colony who quickly starts blasting the zombified remains of these dorks with great enthusiasm. I legitimately can't tell if the devs wanted you to react like this, but the effect is enhanced by the AI character occasionally indicating that the protagonist is quite grim and tense, which puts her at odds with the touchy-feely idiots who formerly occupied the colony.

Not 100% sure what the overarching plot is yet, looks like these guys wanted to set up some cringey commune and ended up fucking it all up, hence you having to run round with a rotary shotgun cleaning up after them.

Big maps with lots to find. Another thing it takes from Marathon is the AI briefings telling you where to go, and leaving it up to you whether or not you bulldoze straight over there or spend lots of time exploring all the secrets, which I like.

Of all the 90s FPS, absolutely NONE had a female lead.
Alien Trilogy, The Wheel of Time, Trespasser, Hexen 2 (and the expansion in which you're meant to play as a newly-added female character), Unreal, Rise of the Triad, Mysteries of the Sith, In Pursuit of Greed, Eradicator, Klingon Honor Guard, Rainbow Six, Delta Force, Blood 2, probably a few more.

Bolded are ones where the female lead can't be changed, rest let the player select their character. I've bolded Unreal since Gina is the canon protag.

If you expand it to 2000, there's No One Lives Forever, Perfect Dark, Elite Force, Medal of Honor Underground...

I got owned. Even though I've played almost all of these...though most of them are shit.

Still, like I said, under normal circumstances I wouldn't care, but you know full well this shit be FISHY. Constantly beat over the head with it. Agenda and/or selling out is on the menu. If the girl was hot it'd be completely different, that appeals to males, i.e 99% of this game's audience. Sure, you could argue it's not about the consumer expectation, but the artistic vision, which I can get behind....but what kind of artistic vision IS THAT, exactly? A fucking lame weak-ass soy boy sellout one, that's what.

I think a lot of people just like to play as a different range of characters. Even Doom, in its early development, was going to let you select from a big pool of characters (the apparent default option being an East Asian woman). Same for Deus Ex, which was at one point going to have a selectable female JC (presumably with the same skin tone options as the male JC). I think I remember reading somewhere that System Shock's hacker was originally going to be female too, but I'm not sure where I read that.

A lot of people will find it fun to play as someone superficially different from themselves, especially in a game with a silent/mostly silent protagonist where you essentially bring a lot of your own personality to the character. I'm not an unstoppable musclebound soldier but I still like being Doomguy, I'm not a woman in the French resistance but I still enjoyed being Manon in MoH, I'm not the resurrected remains of a cultist but I still liked being Caleb, I'm not a seven-foot-tall demoness who can fly but I still liked playing as one in Portal of Praevus. And so on and so forth; I'm not a xenomorph but I liked leaping around upside down and sticking onto walls in AvP.

Same for Supplice - I'm not a terraforming engineer from the 23rd century (nor am I black or female), but I'm still having fun bashing people's heads in with a big drill. I think the appeal of this character is the same as that of Doomguy, or the security guard from Marathon, or Gordon Freeman - it's another sole-survivor type character who seems to have endless bad luck while facing worsening odds, and that's always a fun role to step into. But otherwise she's silent and therefore is a representation of "you", the player, and her thoughts and reactions to things are thus yours.

The Steam page also says the character is based on a real stuntwoman, which confuses me a bit because you never actually see yourself in-game and you never speak other than to say "nope" when trying to open a locked door, but it's still pretty cool, I suppose, and strikes me as the kind of thing that some developer would actually have tried in the 90s.
