well, khitomer accords...
Is that some star trek thing? If so, that's not fun or realistic. My interstellar mongol horde with faster than light technology doesn't need authorizations to ocupy an alien planet.

I bet this will be nothing more than re-skinned Europa Universalis IV/Crusader Kings II and suck as much as, if not more than CiV in Space AKA Beyond Earth.

Because at this point I have more hopes in Stardock than in the Ubisoft of the Grand Strategy niche Paradox has become.

GalCiv 3 2.5 is already released and it's mediocre as all fuck with nickle/dimish DLC instead of proper expansions like GalCiv 2 had.

And even if Stellaris was just a reskinned eu4/ck2 it would still be exponentially better than anything Stardock has ever developed.

Needs claims to conquer planets? What retarded EU shit is this?

That would make sense in a more estabilished part of the game, but early on it should be pretty much be senseless.
They could always call it a "Justification", as in you have to justificate to your populace why you need/have/want to conquer another planet and drag them into a war. So something like "mongol horde in space" or a Bugs/Tyranid/Zerg swarm should be able to spam DoWs left and right and be practically untalkable with, while a monarchy or a republic might need to justify it, cause incidents, etc. And as more civilizations contact each other, the more advanced diplomacy should get.

Rocket Fuel can't melt plasmasteel beams.

Did they say anything about atrocities system like SMAC? Genetic plagues, slamming comets into a planet, genocide, rape pillage burn, nerve gas, climatic attacks, nuking, etc, should be a lot easier when nearly nobody knows each other, whereas doing Holocaust II: The Holocausting and turning ten worlds into charnnel houses in a age of inter-galactic high diplomacy, should really screw you up.

Mods will save it.

Also, 'First Contact' in space games are rather bland. The most momentous event that anyone could imagine and all that 4x does is treat it like meeting your next door neighbor

There could possibilities for riots, civil war, mass hysteria, religious revivals etc

I never saw problem with Casus Bellii in EU. "Civilized and cultured" countries had their own CBs, somewhat limited, hordes had a Cbs that allowed them to dow eberyone and everything.
Space mongols could dow just as hordes in EUIV and it'll be ok both logically and gameplay-wise as it''ll allow introducing new models for governments, such as "no war without senate approval".

A spacefaring civilization does want to have some excuse when they wanna ravage other planets. Thought actual INVASIONS are much harder than just bombing said planets and then doing other stuff after proving a point.

I agree. It could even be a interesting way to cause spontaneous space-feudalism - you find a nice planet with nice resources and industry, but taking all that would require way more troops than you can ship or lose. So instead you defeat their space forces until they swear vassalage, then leave them alone while they send tribute.
I like the concept of interstellar conflict in old man's war, that a lot of species share basic needs in terms of planetary environments and with habitable Planets in short supply, they will end up in constant conflict with lesser species being exterminated to make way for the more powerful ones colonization efforts... There needs to be no excuse beyond valuable real-estate.

This makes sense as tribute, or money is much less useful than an actual planet to colonize.

The problem is transport costs. You can't efficiently transport stuff from mars, and interstellar transport costs are much higher.

probably this game will take few victims...

About damn time. I was actually just thinking about how desperately lacking the space empire builder genre was in true "grand strategy" games the other day. lol

Not a huge fan of the whole "space lanes" 4x convention though. MoO got on just fine without them back in the day, and so did the first SoTS game.

Edit:

Ah, nevermind. It was already addressed. I very much like the idea of being able to choose between different modes of travel.

I wonder if they'll include a HOI4 save game porter.

I've got a CK2/EU4 Neo-Roman Empire I want to roflstomp the entire galaxy with, damnit! LOL

Casus Belis in EU and CK games are often just automatic, ie attacking other religions or other forms of government. You don't always have to fabricate some bullshit excuse to steamroll 1 - 2 province country.

Design and name a custom species with the government and attributes you desire.

There you go, make your own quasi-Battletech(or whatever) galaxy without giant bird men or hovering blobs or space cat babes etc.

Paradox Brings You Stellaris - Grand Strategy in Space!
Explore an ancient galaxy full of life, wonder, and peril

We at Paradox are happy to introduce our latest project, where we will take Grand Strategy to the next level. Revealed at our Fan Gathering earlier this month during Gamescom, we officially announced Stellaris -- a pausable real-time strategy game where you explore and build an empire in a vast galaxy teeming with friendly and not-so-friendly alien species.

No two galaxies are the same! Stellaris is a grand strategy game with the depth and emergent storytelling you've come to expect from Paradox Development Studio. Send your science ships out to research anomalies and ancient ruins! Discover vibrant young civilizations like your own, as well as decadent fallen empires. Develop dangerous new technologies to help you overcome your opponents, but take care not to disrupt your entire way of life! Will you conquer and enslave your enemies or convince them to join you in a democratic Federation?

The world is already excited for Stellaris -- see why Rock, Paper, Shotgun has declared it the title that "Won Gamescom."

Q: Shall different species prefere different types of worlds?
A: When you create your species, you get to pick the planet class of your homeworld (Desert, Ocean, etc). This then becomes the preferred habitat of your species. We do model this in the game... so if you come from a desert homeworld, members of your species won't be super excited to live on an ocean planet.
Q: how aboout several species on a single planet?
A: Some would like it and some wouldn't, depending on their homeworld type and the planet they were on.

Those are pretty much genre standards at this point, come on

Name some recent 4X strats with those features. Most just shove planets in a population limit and malus from gravity or toxicity.
Stardrive 1&2.
