The red forest in CS was pretty awesome. I remember running through it, trying to find shelter from an emission while mutants were swarming all over. I can't remember if it was scripted or random, but it was pretty memorable.

It was pretty awesome, yeah, but my memories of Red Forest are kind of sullied by the fact that on my first playthrough it silently corrupted my saves causing the game to consistently CTD after venturing a bit deeper, forcing a complete start over.

Then the end of CS degenerates into disjointed mess of loosely stringed together linear sequences culminating with MyFirstMod-worthy boss fight.

If you're not going to go full series, then COP, play it some to get the feel, then misery 2.0

I never liked Clear Skies mostly for the fact that the other factions seems to get an endless supply of goons. What I really loved of the first Stalker and Call of Prypiat was exploration and the atmosphere. Unlike other post-apocalyptic games, here the sense of a ruined world felt so real, so tangible.

A pity the developer went under... I though the games were quite a commercial success, enough to warrant the development of a new one.

I dunno man. Apparently they went under from piracy... but I have all the games on original DVD with the box, and they made plenty is sales so...

I heard they ran out of funds while developing a true sequel; it didn't help that some key developers left to join the studio that created Metro 2033. Apparently, some of the former Gsc guys are now developing a mmofps with a similar theme. I'm not going to touch anything that contains "massive online" shit in it, though.

Survarium? I dunno. Looks kinda interesting to me. I'll at least give it a try.

They didn't run out of jack shit. Sergey Glugkhovsky, the owner is basically a pure blooded businessman. He wanted the game to branch out to consoles in order to rake in the big bucks. That project was deemed financially unfeasible, so he froze the development all together. As of now GSC is basically relegated to being the farm boy that milks the IP for all its books until somebody comes along to buy it.

Wait. Aren't you mistaking STALKER for Metro 2033? The latter is based on a novel by a writer named Dmitry Glugkovsky

GSC was headed by a Sergiy Grygorovych and they had quite a history, as developers, before STALKER. The first game also sold more than 2M copies, so it was quite a success, despite the troubled development (I think the first screenshots circulated back in 2002 or even earlier).

Yeah, I remember seeing a pretty impressive gameplay video for SoC back in 2004. It showed off a lot of content that never made it into the final game, though.

A few years ago, GSC released an earlier 'work in progress' build of Stalker, dated c.a. 2004.

It's very unstable (I think there's a community cumulative patch but it resolves only a few issues) but it includes cut out scenarios, larger levels, a different physics engine and other stuff that never made to the final game.

EDIT: There's a international modding team which is currently trying to port this 'old' build to the latest Stalker engine enhancing textures and GFX in the process. Search on Google for 'Stalker Lost Alpha' MOD if you're interested.

Ah fuck, I meant Grigorovich of course. Even though the game was a big success, he wanted to break into the big leagues. At least that's what the refugees from GSC said.

As for Lost Alpha, is that ever going to be released?

The team behind the mod got a sort of endorsement from GSC and are now exploring the possibility to turn this mod into a standalone, indie product. They're regularly updating their site with new pictures, so I guess the work is progressing...

Chernobyl has much better atmosphere and manages to be a much better survival horror game overall, but Pripyat's gameplay is better. Pripyat is also a bit sparse on the atmosphere.

So, it depends on what you want, really. I just think SoC is the best out of the three. It has better missions, a bit of a derpy story and incredible locations. THe first time I got to the old village I nearly shat myself.

Oh, and SoC has X18.
