So, Sonic Superstars was released yesterday. Has anybody checked it out yet? While I love 2D-Sonic, I don't like the plastic look, so I'm not really hyped.
I played it. It's pretty good; a 7/10 game, I'd say. Wait for a sale if you're not a huge Sonic fan. According to some leaks, there's gonna be a Mania Plus style expansion pack next year including a playable Fang the Sniper, so it might be a good time to grab it when that comes out.
Steam reviews are not good, so it goes to the bottom of the backlog.
SEGA fucked themselves by sneaking in Denuvo and Epic Games Store integration. I don't really give a fuck myself, I already had an EGS account so the game didn't make me sign in or anything like that, and it runs perfectly on Linux through Proton in spite of it all. But fags on Steam really, really care about EGS being a part of a game because of muh spyware or whatever, and that's the main reason for the negative Steam reviews.
Mania's Denuvo crap got removed in a patch; hopefully, the same happens with Superstars.

There's also talk of the music being replaced in a patch. According to some anons on 4chan, data miners found that a lot of Superstars's more 16-bit, synthesizer heavy tracks have different versions featuring real instruments that are hidden in the files. Supposedly, a similar situation happened with some Pokémon game where the finished music was patched in. If this is the case then I have no idea why they decided to release Superstars on the 17th rather than the 23rd as they originally planned, since the Genesis chip tracks have been receiving many negative comparisons to Sonic 4 and the OST's reception has been mixed.
Take all this music talk with a grain of salt because I heard it all on 4chan and it could be a bunch of lies.

Played a friends copy yesterday. Not keen on the graphical style, fucking hate that general modern over-bright over-smooth look in general, but I had a good time playing it for the 60-ish minutes I had on it. Nothing spectacular, but I'd say Sonic fans will find plenty to enjoy.

Dang, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog only has one M2TS file for the episodes per disc. So episodes 1 to 50 rip as an 18 hour MKV. When I got Rose of Versailles from the same label, I cut the episodes repeatedly, making the four long files shorter and shorter, until I finally had the 40 episodes. Took probably hours. Not doing that again. My Zidoo Z9X is crappy at playing BDMV folders (meaning an exact copy of the disc with menus and encryption removed). Unless I can find a free BDMV media player that I like, I'll play the darn disc.

Have watched three or four episodes. Seems underrated (6.3 on IMDB). Yeah, I know, "I'm waitiiiing" is not cool and "Sonic Says" is so corny and Scratch's voice is no good, but the world is so charmingly stylish, Sonic and kid Tails make a good team and the stories so far have been decent.

Edit: Four episodes. I remember all the side characters so far.

How was Team Sonic Racing btw? Seems like it has good reviews but I remember at release some people being a bit iffy, I loved Sonic and All-Stars Racing fwiw.

I know I'm talking to myself, but the reason the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog remux collection is not available anywhere despite being only 56 GB for the 65 episodes and special features is because the 18 hour M2TS file containing episodes 1-50 and the 5.5 hour M2TS containing episodes 51-65 can't even be split into individual episodes by normal means. Keyframes (and chapter markers) one second before the credits end make it so that the next episode's opening will always have that last second of the prior episode's ending before it after it has been split. It doesn't matter how specific you are with the time; the keyframe will always break it. I have never seen a TV show authored like this. You see the 18 hour seekbar also when you are playing it with a Blu-ray player.

The 480i picture definitely looks better encoding-wise than any DVD series in my collection, though, because of the superior codec on Blu-ray.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was shit, but I'm biased because it ran around the same time as SatAM and I felt like I was being tricked into watching a far worse show. SatAM was edgy and dark with just the right amount of drama, whereas Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is dumb slapstick garbage

Maybe someone can recommend games similar to Sonic 3D Blast? 3d action platformer where you explore maze-like levels overcoming environmental obstacles and destroying enemies happening in your way.

So, I played (and finished) Sonic Frontiers, after trying Sonic Forces (and completing it by watching a LP as the game kept crashing on me).
Overall, it's a mixed bag. I'm no rabid fanboy and I only played the classics and Generations and don't know much of the American comic or care. The story of this game takes a bit too seriously and the dialogue with part of the very small NPC cast (Tails and Knuckles respectively) is all about fixing their inconsistent behavior in the latest games... In the worst way possible. Knucks is a hermit that lives alone most of the time, and became the leader of the Resistance in the previous game. Result? His first ingame action results in half of the Resistance being taken out after a distraction maneuver goes badly. In Frontiers, his dialogues are all about proving that nope, he's totally a good commander and not a half-mad hobo.
Tails forgets all his character development from Sonic Adventure and becames a coward in Sonic Forces. In Frontiers he says "I'm inconsistent", word for word, top kek. Half of his dialogue are also references to previous games, so he kind of feels like someone was following a checklist rather than writing a "real" character. Sage's personality seemingly is about becoming a fangirl by observing Sonic alone, kek. Oh, and at one point Amy talks about "spending time away from each other" with Sonic, even though chasing the guy is pretty much her entire personality, heh. No wonder some fans don't like Ian, when he clearly takes things too seriously, but there's not much to work with these characters anyway.

Ultimately though, the story can be skipped as gameplay is what matters. I would say Frontiers doesn't know what it wants to be or needed more time/resources invested, as the cyberspace stages suck ass, the control in the outside world is okay (until the game keeps locking your camera to a 2D plane without warning), the grinding resources element can be skipped entirely by fishing, and the Titan Battles are fought in very small rings and full of QTEs. Oh, and there's barely any warning when you're about to fight the Titans, which is annoying if you wanted to explore the island thoroughly before the fight.

Lastly, you can't skip the credits in any way, in 2023, which is odd as you can skip any other cutscene ingame. And there are no invincibility frames if you're hit.

Overall, I give it 6/10, I found Sonic Generations better and I didn't finish that one yet. Good thing there are some mods for Frontiers that make it less clunky. Fans and younger people may find this game better, I suppose.

The final DLC is meant for true aspies/extra-rabid Sonic fans, as it combines the worst parts of the game, repeatedly: From strict platforming sections with popping and a limited camera not letting you see where you're going, to mandatory battles with bosses with inflated stats, to poorly explained mechanics that you must use to progress, etc.
Playing as Sonic's friends is cool, but they start at level 1 with very little unlocked on the last island of the game, and they don't even begin with a basic attack unlocked, FFS! Thankfully, you don't need to do combat with any of them. Either way, Amy is slower than Sonic but better at exploring as she can triple jump and glide, Tails has no homing attack for some fucking reason, which means he's extra-annoying for some sections (but you can unlock a flying ability that lets him break entire game sections quite easily), and Knucks sucks at everything, not being strong enough in combat due the enemies' inflated stats, and taking 1 second to switch animations and start gliding, which makes him very aggravating to play. In short, watch the DLC somewhere and don't bother, it's not worth the effort.

Picking through the dumpster bin that is Sonic games' lore, Ian realized that Amy at ONE POINT used tarot reading, and now they're doing that for everything. It goes as far as Amy having card-themed skills ala Persona: from attacking with cards, to gliding, to having a turbo boost with them, to make a tornado attack. Meanwhile, her hammer attack has been nerfed to a slow, strong attack. It's quite ridiculous and funny. Amy being able to glide means that Knucks' ability was nerfed (unless you unlock an upgrade that lets him glide without losing attitude, essentially flying, but it's not worth it and still takes him a second to prepare). Oh, and Knucks can only climb red walls, nothing else.
The devs noticed the change is odd, so the characters themselves (especially Amy), talk how it's odd that their abilities are different from usual. I guess Ian covered his bases in case in future games Amy is back to her hammer.

I actually think Sonic is at its best when it's serious. That's why SatAM had so much better writing than everything else. Frontiers is on par with SatAM for me. Maybe a little lower just because the setting didn't give much to work with.

I disagree. While SatAM was mostly serious, it wasn't trying too hard, or attempting to fix plot-holes like Frontiers does. Although Antoine and the retarded dragon can rot in hell.

I think sonic is at its best when there is no dialog.
This is also an acceptable option.

It's best when Robotnik and his associated machines and zones are serious so they stand in stark contrast with the cutesy cartoon critters.

This was at the heart of the original games and can be seen in the industrial horror aesthetic and music of the first game's final level:



It was an interesting mix of the two contrasting elements.

The thing was the 80s and 90s did that serious cartooniness well but the zeitgeist is too different now.

Not to mention the sheer level of effort put into the detailing. Both the backgrounds (theres more than one!) and the foregrounds of scrapbrain are lush.

Sonic's problems are only made worse now the lunatics are running the asylum with Sonic. Sonic doesn't have characters in a way that need depth. Sonic adventure is pushing the characters to breaking point already and there never needed to be more than that. Sonic needs a reason to fight, Tails needs to make a flying machine, knuckles needs to be broody but help when the stakes get too high and Amy needs to swoon over Sonic. Literally nothing is needed beyond this and any time you try to get deep with Sonic you end up shitting the bed. Mario gets it's characters right, they're mascots to be used for various games, not story telling.

The art style makes my eyes bleed. The green hill knock off is way too busy and lacks restraint.

Sonic fangames have pretty bad level design and now they're making them official (Mania and All stars) the 2D games are becoming tedious to play. Level design is an art form and throwing in 10 gimmicks does not make a good Sonic game. Sonic 3 makes every level into a gimmick fest and seriously under values a lot of the core platforming and fangames have only got worse. Almost every Mania level is more gimmick than platformer. So why wouldn't I play a better platformer with better level design like... oh I don't know, Sonic 1 or 2? 2 has gimmicks but they never dominate a stage the way 3 and beyond do.

I think Mania has too many gimmicks and not enough platforming in it. I don't enjoy the game wrestling control away from me to make Sonic do something 'cool'. I like a lot of 3D and 2D sonic games. I don't like ANY game that does shit like Sky garden, Carnival zone or Launch base.

Why must I be a nostalgia fag if I think the primary focus of a platforming game should be tight platforming and not gimmicks like sliding on rails or riding poorly controlling spinning platforms? Mania bores me because it won't fuck off and let me play an actual Sonic game. Almost every act 2 is constant gimmick spam for no good reason.

Sonic 3 is stage design porn. Yeah it's got gimmicks, but most of them are meaningful and add to the sense of speed and excitement, they're not just there for the sake of it.
