I honestly don't remember if I bothered to finish Skyrim's main quest.

I did the civil war quest line and found the resolution so unsatisfying I believe I stopped playing. In the main quest I got as far as finding the super secret base but don't think I progressed further.

The civil war faction questline is by far the game's worst, as far as story and quest design are concerned.

Yeah, the 'epic' battles of attacking a fort of ten derpy npcs accompanied by ten derpy npcs of your own was laughably shallow. I enjoyed the game for what it was: first person dungeon crawler but didn't bother with a third or of the remaining content.

I don't see how it would be worse storywise than... well, any of the guild questlines. Sure, the story is almost nonexistent, just like the quest design, but it's the only questline (aside from maybe the Dark Brotherhood) that doesn't fall flat on its ass during the first two quests or so. TG, MG and Companions are much more likely to cause you to rage-quit and uninstall the game.

Because expectations. The other questlines don't use civil war + dragons as a backdrop. There's no excuse for fucking up with an awesome plot hook like that.

And I'll take saving the Mages' college as a novice over picking flowers for Ajira any day.

Yeah but the most fucked up thing about the mages guild quest was that it was a self inflicted disaster... as in, if you as a novice didn't activate the orb of doom because "chosen retard" then you wouldn't have to save the world from the orb of doom. The only quest line I actually mildly enjoyed was teh companions, at least that was just a bunch of random shit happens to some drunken mercenaries, no world saving, no killing the emperor of all humanity, no fucking mention of a chosen one, no Ulfric. Just killing saber cats inside people's houses for profit.

I haven't played any of Skyrim's quests more than once, like Metro said it's at it's best as a dungeon crawler. But from what I remember the Companion's quest was less shitty than most, and I personally didn't hate the Dark brotherhood line either. Especially since you had the option to kill them, I resent the shitty thieves guild for not just dying like they should.

While none of the questlines are stellar in any way the others at least have unique locations, scripts, enemies and shit that make them feel significant. The civil war thing is 90% random fort shit, with one standout questline in the battle for Whiterun.

Destroying Oblivion gates was much more fun than killing Dragons.

But OP is wrong, the eyes don't lie when they're staring at the monitor! Graphic is much better.

I only destroyed 2-3 before I stopped playing the game, every replay since then I've avoided the main quest like the plague. Bloody terrible.

They need to bring back the dungeons that are so big you get hopelessly lost and are forced to start a new guy

...if you ever managed to do that in Daggerfall you are prob not meant to play Elder Scrolls.

Starting a new guy might be extreme, but there were plenty of times in the early game where you could get totally fucked by a dungeon to the point of being forced to reload. Usually standing yourself in an unpassable underwater area or falling down a one-way pit that can't be climbed out of.

In Daggerfall you can climb vertical walls. Or Recall out, if you don't forget to anchor. But nevertheless, dungeons there are too complex. Finding exit is one thing, finding quest objective that could be everywhere...
I think Arena had the best dungeons - not too complex, not too simple.

The climbing mechanic always screwed up for me. On the rare occasions I could actually reach the end of a climb, instead of climbing onto a ledge my guy would hover for about 5 seconds then plummet all the way down and usually die on impact.

Arena's dungeons were great though. I love how much they reward the use of Passwall as well.
