It sounds like he's going to evolve it further with the social/multiplayer elements as time goes on. That's the feeling I get. The singleplayer part sounds like just a hook to satisfy a desperate portion of the crowd until the game can support itself. I would like to see them prove otherwise.

I like that he seems to appreciate the importance of PvP and natural population dynamics like stealing and contraband over the incredibly sterile and newbie friendly approach of the more recent MMORPGs but I just have no interest in playing MMOs or even multiplayer in a game of this kind

It's a curious project to watch and analyse though.

and d) buy me some new larping gear. This isn't a cheap hobby you know.

That's because you never played Ultima IV - V - VI - VII Part 1* - VII Part II* and VIII (FUCK THE HATERS).

Then you would be filled with FUCKING RAGE!!!

*And saw the decline of combat lol.

I did bro, but I don't feel any rage. I rather feel amusement, RG's antics make me laugh. He's just in the middle of his midlife crisis.

Also: he wants to "accelerate" the game's development. Didn't the "acceleration" of Ultima 8 was something he clearly didn't liked? Well, EA fucked RG back then but why he wants to hurry so much. His fanbase would still answer to his game.

It's like I thought. I'm watching his Ustream from earlier and he actually said he wants to make basically "Ultima 7 / Ultima Online" in one game to appease both.

One interesting thing RG said is that there won't be quest markers/compass, floating icons above NPCs or even a quest log(!) and he hates that kind of stuff. That gives me a lot of relief and makes me believe he hasn't gone completely popamole like a lot of developers have.

Wait, hold the fuck up. He just said they're going to charge every year for a new "expansion" AND if they release new character classes they'll make you pay to access them; he compared it to League of Legends. roofles???

Late 90s decline and popamole looking down its nose at late 2000s decline and popamole.

Haven't even check their KS thread since I withdrew my pledge. This statement from RG vindicates my decision. Whatever funds I was going to give to this... whatever the hell it is... will go to the Codex fundraiser for servers/ T:Ton.

What is DW Bradley doing these days? He seemed to be obsessed with tinkering with Dungeon Lords for years despite no one caring about the original game

Don't know if they are just making this up, but someone posted on 11/11/11:

http://nilbid.com/2011/02/17/where-in-the-world-is-d-w-bradley/

I can’t remember the company name or that actual magazine issue #, but somewhere around September of last year (2010), EDGE MAGAZINE did a spread on Atlanta game companies. One of those companies ports Japanese mobiles games (I think). They had a photo of everyone at the company and DWB was standing in the background off to one side. The photo wasn’t marked with names, but I remember what he looks like.

MENUe (http://menue.com/) is the company, in Edge Magazine, Sept 2010, p.125

Well, that website doesn't seem to exist anymore, and Dungeon Lords MMXII came out later in September 2012. Don't know what D.W. Bradley is up to now. A Kickstarter would make a lot of sense for him. He might even get the Wizardry license, if he wanted to. Isn't that IP owned by some company in Japan now?

We'll try to get something in writing within the next few days clarifying a few money items. I think Richard mentioned LOL in the video but our plan is probably closer to what Guild Wars 2 has done. Buy the game upfront and some voluntary, non-painful micro-transactions in game to pay for the ongoing server and dev costs.
Welp.

I think... Our plan is probably...

He learned about KS from Matt Barton's video.... Right?

Imagine this, combined with that, combined with that other thing... It'll be nothing like that! But you get it right?

@Gen Yong from Richard Garriott - To get the current state of the persistent world, you would have to play online. If you are asking "If I play exclusively offline, can I still own a house?" then likely so, likely without "taxes". My honest expectation before starting this campaign, was that while the game could be played offline for periods of time, I did not expect people to desire to "never connect". based on player feedback, we are now exploring the "never connect" option. We should be able to provide it. We are researching these details now. Regardless, we are not building a social micro transaction game. We will only be charging for large new downloads and things that also cost us to support. I believe we are building a game with the best features of solo player and MMO experience, WITHOUT costing YOU or US nearly as much as MMO's have in the past.

Holy SHIT are these guys out of touch with the Kickstarter crowd.

EDIT:

I don't think I can give a 100% committed answer on DRM right now because there is still a chance we could go with Steam, put a version of the game on Ouya(after Win/OSX/Linux launch of course), or some other distribution system that has DRM in it. I know that isn't exactly the answer you want but those are still some big questions we're still working on! We can't just come out and state "THERE WILL BE NO DRM!" because it could close off too many other opportunities that would benefit the end user. So sorry, but we will continue to have to dance around the DRM question a bit but we're going to try to do what is best for you guys whenever possible. -Chris Also, I think we're going to do another live video stream tomorrow. I'll get Firelotus to take some questions in the morning for us to answer so it is a bit less chaotic this time. I'll be offline this afternoon but try to get back to more answers in the morning and I'm sure Firelotus and others will be chatting. :)

hahahahahaha
