The alien craft looks very... Gigeresque.

Agreed.

Proper quality concepts/renders of the Retaliator and Gladiator:

God damn, this is a thing of beauty. As you can see, there are three torpedo bays on the ventral side of the ship. Apparently, the front two torpedo bays can be replaced with "luxury apartments" as seen in the Retaliator concept gallery.

Reminds of a ship from WC, but I can't place which one. Cool looking though.

This is a glimpse at the tentative, as-yet-to-be-finalized "shields have been hit" effect:

As with numerous things about Star Citizen, I've never seen anything quite like this in a computer game before.

It just occurred to me that while many things in sci-fi space combat seem feasible eventually, energy shields just aren't. Discovering faster than light travel is more probable than creating energy shields.

Oh well. I guess they look cool.

I tend to agree, since matter is essentially condensed energy. I recall reading somewhere that if a dollar bill were instantaneously converted to energy with 100% efficiency, the resulting explosion could level a small city. It therefore seems logical that using curtains of glowing energy to "block" stuff should always be less effective than using some sort of dense matter armor instead.

Well no, things like that can only be claimed by ignorant uneducated .... ignorants.

The power shield or force shield does not require complete transformation of some amount of matter into energy.
Its a matter of science and technology - not power.

A force shield would actually be something like weak and strong nuclear forces operating without nucleus's of atoms, controlled by the tech that produces it so that you could then wave these "layers" of energy however you please, more or less.
And as some of us understand, controlling nuclear forces in such a way would make such a shield pretty impervious to ordinary matter, which is atoms held together by their electrons.
(of course, you can spin it so the tech is only developed, that it has certain limitations, that energy gradient of the field is in some particular state or has particular limits incurred from the limitations of various technologies that create it, and or by the very capability of creating those ammounts of energy through conventional means such as nuclear-fusion and other types of reactors or fuel needed...etc, etc)

The problem with this concept in cheap superficial shit that all Sci-fi is - is that that kind of technology achievement is rather epic stuff that would have numerous other uses and would be used in millions of other ways - which none of those settings even try.
So all you get is a ship force shield and nothing else.
The tech never expands, its never used in any other way - from micro to macro scale, and the tech never ever evolves.

Which is why Sci-fi is cheap superficial shit.

Unlike Science Fiction.

My spacetruck is going to be suffering come december. Going to be a sitting duck out there with the number of agile small ships ready for deployment.

Its taking all of my common sense and reasoning to not splash out on more ships, especially those sexy lti gladiator and retaliator addons.

Though I was a follower of X-Rebirths "walking in ships"... this cargo bay looks already cleaner and bigger than the one from Albion Skunk...

Just strap as many turrets on that as possible or outrun them with pure speed, those two option should be available to make freighters and other flying cows viable.

The only speedy freighter right now remains the Constellation, which is loosely based on the concept of the Millennium Falcon and will, like its Star Wars counterpart, be able to outrun all but the very fastest fighters—on a straight shot and once it gets up to speed, of course.

I assume running will be a viable option with maxed out engines but its not much of a boon in the sense of a dogfighting module.

Its going to be quite something having all these different ships in a pvp "arena". Or they'll include options for Freelancer only battles and the like. To let everyone have some fun.

In general, the Constellation—competently crewed and properly outfitted, of course—should be a match for several fighters at least. According to its stats sheet, it can carry 48 missiles in swing-out racks, with (I believe) the ability to load more from cargo. In contrast, the Hornet carries 8 missiles tops. The Constellation also sports two manned heavy turrets that cover very nearly 360 degrees around the ship, in addition to its forward-facing guns. It's highly modular and can be tailored for specific combat situations (advanced ECM, perhaps). Finally, it carries a launch-able and very fast snub fighter.

Keep in mind too that in an arena situation, there'll be two teams. That said, if a Constellation does get swamped, it'll certainly go down.
