That's nothing unexpected, really. What I find more baffling is how quite a few people casually admit that the review is right and the game has shit character system, shit combat, shit encounters, shit loot and shit quests, but is a good crpg that they enjoyed.

The answer has been given to you a by a few posters already. The codex gotta be edgy! Not sure why though. Edgy doesn't appeal to me much personally.

Lots of butthurt fanboys ITT who don't actually have any arguments against the review other than "b-but it's AWESOME!" When did Codex turn into BSN?

Very good read, fair review for a game that utterly failed at everything it set out to do.

Game is still using Unity, what did you expect? You cannot get optimization from an engine that does not optimize (in order to remain valid for all game ideas).

Well yeah, I'm not too bothered by it. Truth be told I could just overclock my cpu to 5000 ghz and loading times wouldnt be a problem, and I just might if it gets worse than it is. I'm just wondering what kind of setup can have 5 seconds loading times in this game, because I thought my computer was a beast ;)

The thing with PoE is that it's most certainly a decent game, it's not agressively bad like say Oblivion, has some moments here and there. But at the same time it doesn't do enough to satisfy people. I finished it and kept thinking while the credits rolled "man, I should replay some isometric party RPG".

Complains about accuracy

Says priest is useless because it doesn't have any good buffs

I dunno, he has valid points, but there's a bunch of junk in there too. I think he's clearly a PotD player and probably played on hard, maybe normal.

IF YOU AREN'T BRINGING DESCARTES WITH YOU WHEN YOU PLAY THIS GAME YOU'RE A GODDAMN IDIOT

At one level I'd agree with a lot of the criticisms, but as always with RPGCodex, if anything strays from the one troo faith of the inclined cRPG (a notion which they all seem to agree exists but which none of them can ever actually describe or articulate) they go off the deep end.

But then a drought of good RPGs hit and I'm seeing village idiots left and right getting drunk off candy brandy like whores after Prohibition. The game is OK, it does most things competently and its presentation is great, but it excels at nothing and doesn't innovate beyond reinventing a triangular wheel for combat.

Your assessment is a far cry from Roxor's "worst Obsidian game evar" review.

Compared to the IE games:
- Several classes are real innovations, such as the Chanter, Ranger & animal combo, Cypher, etc.
- The whole soul mechanic is an innovation not seen before.
- The endurance/health split is a very helpful innovation.
- The endless dungeon to gain full control of your keep is an innovation.
- Guns are an innovation and a fun one at that.

Split Endurance/Health is fucking shit. The Ranger is the worst class in the game by design. Endless Paths is a complete joke. I agree with Roxor's view of souls. Guns are kinda cool ... but BG2 had a grenade launcher ;)

Btw, people complaining about load times must be stuck in 386. Transitions take 5 seconds to load on Act 3 to me.

What CPU are you using...? An Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3?

I am playing this game on a toaster which is way under minimal system requirements and it runs like a charm, didn't even have to turn down the graphics quality. Didn't have a single crash either and just one minor bug. I do have an SSD though, which probably helps with loading times.

No, it's not.

The Ranger is the worst class in the game by design.

Repeating this does not make it true. I found that a Ranger with an Arbalest was pretty much the best ranged attacker, plus the animal has turned out to be very useful in many cases.

Endless Paths is a complete joke.

Don't know what you expected from it, but I found it to be a very good dungeon crawl. The buried statue is a nice touch too.

I agree with Roxor's view of souls.

I thought it was about time that a game incorporated past lives into its storyline.

Greater than the sum of its parts (I wouldn't say character creation system is shit though, it's decent).

Also, it sure is pretty.
