Well, I guess they'll decide based on setting popularity. Everyone knows the barbarian invasion era and Romans holding on against Huns and Germans is a very popular setting, while the Crisis of the Third Century is much less well-known.

But, there's always this:

I don't know I'm having much more fun with Paradox games these days because they're much more strategical. Total War games get boring much quicker because at some point it feels like you're doing the same thing over and over again and you get a minimal dose of that creative strategic freedom. They try to find a balance between tactics and strategy and while it has a very good "wow/fun" factor at the outset, you can't help but feel you're getting a mediocre-at-best dose of of the two in the long haul.

I WAS contemplating upgrading the GPU for Rome II but now I'm kind of torn between books or flashy derp GPU $$ games. The former feels more proper.

Also 95% of the music in Total War games is utter shit and how someone could enjoy most of those melodies it is beyond me.

I wish they wouldn't mutilate Seleucid and Parthian territories. It also be better if they extended the map to the borders of India (same as that of the EB map) and add the requisite factions as well (Bactria, North Indian faction?)

I've heard of this series of mods. Are they worth getting?

Yes. It's one of the best mod series for R:TW, in my opinion. Definitely recommended.

you mean Paradox game with TW battles, I hope.
Not feasible as Paradox battle are actual mutliple ones fighting over one province or region. The game would get rather tedious fighting battle after battle after battle. Unless of course you autoresolve but that gets really derp especially when you lose like 200 guys and only kill 40 of the enemy.

eh? apart from hearts of iron the Paradox games isn't "multiple battles in a region". Sure you could claim that it sometimes simulate several battles between two armies, but in game terms seen in this perspective it makes no difference.

No, the bigger problem is that paradox games in real time and sometimes with more armies joining, unless the system is changed considerably it wouldn't work playing out those battles yourself.

It could work easly, you never play all the battles in total war anyways, at least i dont play. I usualy just play my kings battles and or main general.
But the problem would be, that Total war aims at a casual market as well, so i doubt we could see something like that.

So I'm not wrong but it doesn't really matter?

That's another problem.

Again, check how KoH did it.
When a battle is in progress you can call in reinforcements if another army is close enough nearby. The time this army needs to arrive at the battle depends on the distance it has to the battle site.
The game allows two modes of combat: combat with the rest of the game paused; combat with the rest of the game still going on normally.

When the game is paused at combat, nothing will happen on the strategic map while you fight it out. When you disable this pausing, however, shit on the strategic map still goes on while you fight, which means that once combat is over, you might discover some real bad shit (ohshitohshit while I was busy fighting a battle the enemy laid siege to 3 of my castles, and an assassin has killed my heir!).

So yeah, it's definitely possible to have a Paradox-like game with real time battles.

Also, it has a really nice soundtrack.

But honestly, JarlFrank , the amount of battles that take place at any given time in KOH is much smaller than in the Paradox games, unless you're just starting out with a 2-province minor. Very soon you will be fighting multiple battles on multiple fronts so I'm not sure if the same system could work in a game such as EU3, that's just way too big of a time sink.

I guess it could be ok if you want to fight a few strategic fights, but in the long run it could probably make the game really easy if not balanced correctly. A human player would almost certainly be able to outwit the AI every time even with a smaller numerical force. Now, that works for games such as KOH or TW because they don't pride themselves on being very historically accurate, and in TW's case the tactical combat is arguably it's greatest selling point. But Paradox titles tend to lend themselves closer to realism, and while it's true that there have been plenty of times when a smaller forces managed to rout a larger enemy army that's the exception, not the rule.

I'd say that combat in Paradox games is decent enough as it is, since it is a direct result of your overall strategy, rather than the result of your combat tactics, such as TW or KOH. The only thing to improve would be to use a similar system such as the one in the HOI series for the rest of their titles, since it's true that EU has a very, very basic fighting system which could stand a few improvements (hopefully in EU4 :)).

Well, I'd just really *really* love to have a game with a complex campaign map akin to a Pdox game, while also having nice tactical battles, too. And the system could, in principle, work.

Yeah, I'm all for a KOH or TW game which borrows strategic map elements from Pdox games, I'm just not sure it would very well the other way around.

Come on, it will be another typical CA game. I'm really not expecting any big experiments in gameplay apart from bigger and shinier. What I do hope for is polish. Lots of it.

And yeah, KOH is awesome. I simply loved how that game actually let me wage a guerilla/burning earth campaign by making raiding border villages a real nice option.

They'll need to step up the strategic play if they want my purchase. The typical Rome 1+ campaign maps are laughable after nourishing Paradox games.

I don't care about steam workshop inclusion, only about powerful mod tools that allow changes to the campaign map and (at least partially) game mechanics, like it was possible with Rome and Med2.

They can't do that. Works badly with exploiting customers.
