Tbh, I think the game loses some charm by dividing its levels into these smallish sections connected by long corridors stretching forward all the time. The castle isn't a single building where you can explore all the rooms, like the manor in RE1 or the police station in RE2.
One of the reasons I always considered 4 and similar REs less interesting. The definitive RE experience has significant adventure game elements, imo, such as persistent spaces within which you repeatedly move to and fro. It breeds intimate familiarity with the space which leads to a greater sense/ illusion of place, to me at least. I think the relatively low frequency of action helps by making things feel a bit more "real."

On the other hand, the action packed Mercenaries mode has you criss-crossing the environments, makes them feel like more realized spaces than in the story, maybe. Knowing every inch of the maps is key to good play as well

Is there a reason they made parrying so difficult in professional mode? It was ridiculously easy on normal (and also, I assume, on hardcore - just spam the L1 button until someone tries to hit you), but maybe making it harder doesn't mean leaving less than a nanosecond to respond? I just can't wait to replay the Krauser section twenty times.

Krauser's parry window is far more lenient on Professional. I was able to fight him using parries even though I couldn't pull it reliably during the rest of my Pro playthrough.
That's a relief.

The throne room antechamber section (with two blind maniacs running around) was a hard stop for me. After ten deaths, I finally went "fuck it, I'll just stop trying to kite these assholes around the room and do whatever". A couple of shotgun shots and one magnum bullet later, they were both dead.

Still not sure if I just kept missing their little parasite hitbox on the back, or... well, not much else it could be, I suppose.

Well, as I predicted, the Krauser knife fight ended up being a nightmare of quick-time events.

Otoh, the Salazar fight was easier than on normal: I just threw a couple of eggs at him and he died.

I hate quicktime events. I fucking HATE them. If you have to put a button prompt on the screen, that means your mechanics and animations are too shitty to support whatever your PC is supposed to be doing.

Yeah, they should've just put intricate melee knife-fighting mechanics in a third-person shooter...

Beat the final boss first try. I don't think it took one try even on normal. That one shot with the rocket launcher certainly helped (saved it the entire game for this final moment).

Overall, the game seemed less balanced/polished on pro, some sections were easier than normal, others (mostly Krauser) seemed almost infuriatingly punishing. Definitely not the mode in which the game was "meant" to be played. But then, normal was pretty easy, so I guess hardcore would be the ideal playthrough? Not that I'm going to play this a third time.

:4/5:
