Decline PS4 wins the console war against XboxONE, yet it is a hollow victory as Consolesdämmerung is upon us

Rex Exitium (or whatever the fuck you people call him) spotted commenting on the "no female Sony presenters" issue:

That hashtag leads to a Twitter feed of women complaining about every real or imagined instance of misogyny in computer and video games.

What the hell? Do you need a woman, a homosexual, a tranny, a black person, an asian, a native american, someone obese, a muslim, a hindu and a paedophile on the scene lest you risk angering a minority?

What about genderfluid people? did you just forget about them? Check your monogender privilege.

Gender is a fluid and relative concept with different social norms depending on historical context and social situation, so by that very token how can one even say one is "genderfluid" and absolutely attach certain qualities to those separate genders to begin with?

Your ignore list.

The graphics whore in me likes what that video is showing, but beneath the purrrty graphics lies the same dumbed down fps game we see everywhere these days.
  • Quicktime events: check;
  • Regenerating health: check;
  • Hollywoodian presentation: check;
  • Aim assist: check;
  • Completely scripted events: check;
This world is doomed.

Killzone Shadow Fall will be 30 FPS at 1080p resolution according to an interview after the presentation. German gaming site 4players.de reports:

No thank you. After getting used to 2564 x 1440 at 60 FPS with all effects cranked to the max, I'm not ready to accept a subpar experience.

Not another 30 FPS generation...

this is a mid range pc, except it's a midrange pc with 8gigs of GDDR 5, which is in orders of magnitude faster than the shitty ddr 3 we have in our rigs.
Except welcome to the slowass CPU bus bro. You can have GDDR100500 all you want - it won't matter jack shit for anything but your videocard.

Good overview of the launch here:

http://gameological.com/2013/02/more-more-morehow-do-you-like-it/

A producer from Sony’s Evolution Studios said that he and his colleagues had been sitting on their idea for a global peer-to-peer team-based persistent-connection trophy speed online network synergy car game for a decade. They even trademarked the name, DriveClub. You can see why they’d want to lock that down. The trouble is, they were never able to make it until now—apparently because the PlayStation 3 didn’t have enough social. The Evolution producer then showed us how DriveClub players can challenge online friends to beat their best race times, a feature already present in practically every racing game made in the past two years.

This proclamation of a new era was followed by a trailer for Killzone: Shadow Fall that was indistinguishable from countless other trailers we’ve seen for first-person shooters in the past. It hit all the standard plot points. The fresh-faced recruit hops off the troop transport. A building blows up. Much loud shooting ensues. (Here’s a rule of thumb. If the title of your game contains a colon, odds are it’s not a “new experience.”)

As Cage was wrapping up his lament over the inherent terribleness of early film, the most iconic shot of The Great Train Robbery appeared behind him: A bandit shooting his gun directly at the audience. That image was more arresting than any of the glitzy, high-polygon explosions that Sony shoveled into our eyeballs last night. And it crystallized the deepest fallacy of the whole affair—the idea that creativity needs to be free of limitations.
Creativity thrives under limitations. People who love games understand this implicitly, since the best players find the most creative ways to succeed within the confines of the rules. The Great Train Robbery is a masterpiece not in spite of its limitations but because of them. So if David Cage doesn’t think he can produce an emotional work of art with a PlayStation 3 and an eight-figure budget, maybe he shouldn’t be in the art-making business.

There's several things about the announcement that interested me, uninformed internet bitchyness asde. For the first time I can recall, we get a reasonably detailed spec sheet right after the initial unveiling of a new console (https://secure.webassets.scea.com/p...sset/feb21/pdf/playstation4_specification.pdf).

Also, they got Blow to come, and if you read what he said later, Sony aggressively sought him out. MS apparently didn't even try to maintain contact with the dev of one of their biggest indie hits. (http://www.polygon.com/2013/2/21/4016058/the-witness-ps4-jonathan-blow)

Given how both he and Team Meat (and others) have bitched about XBLA, it looks like Sony may be poaching the smaller, more interesting guys with easier publishing and better devrel, which is key. The big AAA stuff is either cross-platform or mandatory bullshit (Killzone etc) and is mostly inconsequential. Sony has also been courting medium-sized studios a lot more than MS over the past few years. No idea what MS is doing, but I bet the bad blood they built up over their mishandling of XBLA and XBLIG will come back to bite them in the ass.

Depends on what MS does naturally, but either way we're looking at a generation of x86 consoles, which is going to be veeery interesting.

Also, no Ridge Racer annoucement. Truly, this is a brave new world.

What? You don't think Atlus will make a game for the PS4?

Check how many games they made for the PS3...
They made 2 or 3 for the PS3, the same ammount to the Xbox and lots of others for handhelds. They will probably make the same ammounts to the next-gen systems.

Nope, they made a single game (Catherine) which was mostly a development test for then current console development. They published and translated a good number this gen, but Catherine is the only thing they actually made.

John Carmack already said most next-Gen console games will likely run in 30 fps, because most console gamers are used to it and nobody is gonna complain. "Plus we can throw twice as many demons at the player".

Killzone SF looks nicely in terms of lighting, colors and style...but that's it. Plenty of style, little substance. Aka Sony.

They also made The Cursed Crusade (terrible POS), and a remake, Persona 4 Golden.
