Even on normal you can get one shot by the starting assassin entering your room.

Especially you somehow build a slow and squishy character.
according to D&Dfags, this is a good thing. Armor should do the complete opposite of what you think it would do. That bulky guy in full plate armor? It actually makes him dodge better!

in before asshurt D&Dfags upset that D&D is trash

I think it's more 'you were unscathed by an attack' rather than dodge. The thought is that if something indeed manages to hurt you, it doesn't matter how many layers of metal it passed through, you're still shanked. On the other hand, it doesn' work all that well for CLUBBERING scenarios.

It's kinda unconventional by today's standards, though, this much is true.

Edit: Oh hell, I'm answering to things that have already been answered. Again. The ride never ends!

I feel like people are overexaggerating the difficulty of the combat. Regardless, when I first joined the forum I said that all we fucking needed was an IE-style game with writing on par with IWD or BG, and people shitted on me for expressing that opinion. We've now got an IE-style game with god-awful writing, and people are singing its praises like it's the second coming of Christ. I'll try the shit out and maybe stick with it if the combat is as good as people are claiming, but the writing looks fucking horrible. All the retards claiming it's endearing because it doesn't take itself too seriously have already been so cucked that they'll make excuses for anything.
The writing so far really is awful. I almost burst out laughing at the awfulness of it all when you meet the inquisitor lady during the intro events and just blurts out what amounts to "I'm undead. I'll tell you later."
On god I'd alt-f4 and automatically refund the game. Something that bad deserves to be pirated on principle.
Well obviously I didn't pay for this.

Between Neo-MCA, Paizo/Pathfinder in the background, the Golarion setting, and overtly SocJus developers, there was no chance this wasn't going to be a trainwreck of some kind.

I feel you. I mean you took the time to pirate their work, and how did they repay you? By wasting your time with well.....I am not sure really, some lady saying she was an undead creature...and she just blurted it out even! WTF? You should defiantly report them.

I am playing on challenging which is one level up from the suggested and even playing the Beta and having meta, I can still easily die if the dice go wrong. One of the problems is that none of the player controlled NPCs are min-maxed and in actuality can be head-on-pants-retarded like Valerie. That isn't true for the enemy NPCs. Those fuckers are min-maxed to the teeth. Nothing like attacking an enlarged warrior with 21 AC with a +9 to hit and 30 hp and his three other min-maxed companions at level 2. I wouldn't be surprised if the derpy head writer (I luv my romance kthnx bye!) guy built all the player npcs(Ameri is decent as she was built by Paizo), and all the pathfinder grognards on staff statted out the enemies. It gets a lot easier if you know how to build characters as the game goes on as you can repair and work around their bad decisions or replace them with your own NPCs.

As for the writing, this is goddamn pathfinder distilled through above mentioned head writer...What do you expect? Eventually all the "I am strong independent WOMAN" and "I am Shinji in cleric form" runs out and you are concentrating on getting your kingdom up and running, talking with state actors, and fucking up enemy nations.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think the writing here is worse than Baldur’s Gate.
Are you out of your fucking mind? How can you equate this,
View attachment 9714
with anything in Baldur's Gate? Notice how I said IWD and BG level writing, versus just saying good writing. BG and IWD don't have "good" writing, in the sense that it's not on the level of a game like PS:T, or Underrail. That doesn't change the fact that the writing in these games creates an immersive setting with endearing characters and quests
prologue1.jpg
(taken from Lilura's blog lol)
What in gods name is wrong with the opening scene of Icewind Dale? People on the Codex are really so fucking delusional that they praise games like FO1 & 2 for their writing while simultaenously shitting on BG and IWD.
BG didn’t take itself too seriously either and believe me, the selling point for that series was never the writing
Again, what the fuck are you talking about? You're right, BG didn't take itself too seriously. That doesn't mean it had dogshit writing like this game seems to have. As for IWD, the writing was actually pretty damn good despite its linearity.
Kingmaker’s writing is really more than decent. I’m not sure what people think is so awful aside from the guys who get triggered by the occasional empowered female character.
:prosper:
Do I really have to provide more examples of the absolutely god awful writing in this game? Why are you shilling it so hard.
POE and TTON and Tyranny were too florid, too wordy, too pretentious... now Kingmaker is too unserious.
It's not too unserious, it's too fucking shit.
:rage:

True, but you can tell Amiri to shut the fuck up and never raise her voice at you again and guess what, she does like a good whore would do. This is where I aprove with the writing, I don't give a shit about your plight of being a woman, never raise your voice at me again, wham bam thank you mam and the discussion was ended. I can feel like a man again:happytrollboy:

Avellone obviously was not writing dialog. If he was, he would not have a barbarian woman saying anachronistic and frankly stupid words like "crappy."

Funny that you say that because words like "shit" were already very well in use in the middle ages (although taboo) and the word "crap" has its roots in Middle English ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Complaining about "anachronistic" language is stupid most of the time because the complaint is based on some very skewed view of a) language and b) the way people in certain periods actually talked.

Most RPG speak has nothing to do with any kind historical use of language, see Ultima et al with its use of thys, thees, thines etc. And holy shit, I'm glad about this because it would be decidedly unfun for me as a german-speaker to play any middle-ages-inspired RPG because holy fuck have you ever read any Walter von der Vogelweide or any other Middle High German poet?

Have fun with stuff such as this:

.

I mean sure go ahead! I'm sure people will LOVE this historically correct usage of language! Or let's go even further back to the Hildebrandslied in Old High German! Even more fun!

Ik gihorta dat seggen,
dat sih urhettun ænon muotin,
Hiltibrant enti Hadubrant untar heriun tuem.
sunufatarungo iro saro rihtun.
garutun se iro gudhamun, gurtun sih iro suert ana,
helidos, ubar hringa, do sie to dero hiltiu ritun.

Yes, I'm exaggeragting but my point is this: if you have complaints about language in a game, it's probably on you. It's your understanding of how language works and not language itself. If you'd analyze any dialogue in modern games, you'd realize that so much of our languages is so randomly cobbled together (even moreso in English) that basically every word in every dialogue could be questioned in regards to its historical usage, its origin in other languages. Many, many words that you'd never suspect would end up on a blacklist.

Because modern language is modern language. Language is not just grammar and words. And to add to that, it's also in a constant flow of development on every level which is quite logical as language has no "correct" way or essence from which it can "deviate". The view that language is entropically destroyed away from some sort of pure form is ludicrous. That's why linguistics is descriptive and not prescriptive.

The writing so far really is awful. I almost burst out laughing at the awfulness of it all when you meet the inquisitor lady during the intro events and she just blurts out what amounts to "I'm undead. I'll tell you later."

From your example I actually have no idea how bad that writing may or may not be. There is no context. I am not saying you are wrong, but somebody saying they are an undead creature and will talk to you about the details of it later does not to me say much of anythingg. Who else was in the room? What were you talking about? Why was she dismissive? Why did she mention it at all?

I think its clear the games writing is not novel worthy nor is it trying to be a RPG novel, but your example is almost totally meaningless since its devoid of any context, and its just an approximation anyway, as you said you are paraphrasing. I have no way to judge what you are talking about except I am just supposed to accept that being told (in a roundabout and non specific manner) that somebody is undead and that they will talk to you about it later is some sort of obvious and universally understood quality marker as it relates writing.
I gave plenty of context. She blurts out what amounts to "I'm undead. I'll tell you later."

Any other lack of context is lacking because there essentially is no relevant context beyond that, which is why it's awful. There is absolutely no reason for her to tell you, let alone in such a way, then and there. The "reason" given is that there are traps somewhere that does not affect her, but this is in no way relevant, since they are easily discovered by one mandatory party member, and then as easily removed by another mandatory party member.

It's in the first 10 minutes of the game or so. Can't miss it. It's hilariously bad.

Good. Remember when the casuals on Obs forum were bitching about their naked party dying to the Titan in the back beta. Then come release POTD was practically playing on story mode
Only at release Deadfire was bugged, and all difficulty levels were serving the same number of enemies as Normal. PotD was still adding the stat buffs, but that was it. Try playing on PotD now ;)

I haven't seen forces of DECLINE working so hard to bring down an inclined CRPG with slander and other devious tricks since the coming of Grimoire.
It seems they consider this to be some kind of final battle or apocalyptic event since they bring out all the sleeper agents of DECLINE they had on rpgcodex.

stop trying to defend dumb shit that exists solely to reduce the math needed to be done when sitting at a table, it's terrible for videogames.
'Sup, Josh!

Yes, it is a good thing. The player should not need a calculator to weigh which moment-to-moment decision is better.

That's why your Deadfire is tanking now, and not in the MMO sense!

What the fuck are you talking about? She’s standing there unharmed in a room full of corpses. You ask her how the hell she survived, and that’s when she tells you she’s undead, because it’s the answer to your question.

This may be a reading comprehension issue.

So... this actually looks like a good murderhobo simulator? Well, fuck me sideways and call me a darling but I thought this just wasn't possible anymore. Looks like I'll have to dive back into D20 class system and remember how to make overpowered munchkins again! Oh those sweet hours spent in SoZ crafting the perfect party...:bounce:

Positioning, AoOs and cleave only really work in a turn-based implementation of D&D3.5. RTwP shit always has to make compromises. Why would this game be different?
I'm not so sure about that. Positioning can be pretty important in RtwP, you can see that even in the IE games. It plays a role in the AI's decision-making about who to attack next.
BTW I don't like that the menu drives my GPU nuts to 100% usage and VSync seems not to apply at all. Anyone got a fix for this?

si82S8S.jpg
One thing you definetly should do is - disable your VSynch from your videocard's control panel, and then enable it in the game. Or the opposite - disable VSynch in the game options, and then enable it through the videocard control panel. This is a Unity thing, or at least I read as much. Should improve your FPS and GPU temperature.

Make PoE D&D based, it suddenly becomes a completely different and superior experience
It's not too late to make it into a much more IE-like combat experience, the modding possibilities are there.

BTW I bought SoZ (NWN2 complete) for like 5 dollars or something awhile ago with the goal of playing SoZ since it is gets fairly high praise for people who like making a party of characters and going on an adventure, but I have not got around to playing it yet..is it still worth it, in this day and age? The IE games age well, I am not sure about the NWN2 engine aging as well. If I enjoyed Icewind Dale more than BG (which I do), is this a game still worth playing today?

I don't have the skills or time to learn them at this time in my life. But if somebody did a good adaption I would pay a lot of money to buy it

Finally someone who said it. Look what good PoE's "serious" tone did! Empyrical data clearly shows that RtwP is about a light story and simple to grasp combat mechanics. For the rest of you, there is Underrail and AoD.
