So, the playtest packet is out (and its free).

http://paizo.com/

So far the reactions are mixed, they took the bits from old pathfinder, D&D 4e and D&D 5e. Magic item bloat is IMO one of the biggest issues, seems to make low magic games nearly impossible due to hp bloat which you can't chip off without magic items.

Core PF fans don't like the 4e stuff that's creeped in. Honestly right now it almost seems some other company will take PF1 and run with it, just like Paizo did with 3e after WOTC launched 4e. It would be hilariously ironic.

I wonder how they'll do it to (pointlessly) try making Rogue a good class: I remember all better Rogue variants (like the investigator) were invariably nerfed and/or triggered a shitstorm of whiny fans. Similar case with Fighters, but if you play a no-magic guy in an high-fantasy setting you should know what you're getting into.

You could download the free playtest core book and see for yourself you know.

Most of the base system ideas seem fine, 3 actions per turn and selected talents instead of fixed class abilities, but the class design is horrifically awful and crashes the whole thing down. All "fighter feats" (which is the retarded name they've given to what D20 Modern or Saga Edition would call "Fighter Talents") do nothing but make you hit harder, debuff what you hit or be harder to hit. Further all of them are locked into long chains (not trees, trees branch), which defeats the point of having selectable talents in the first place. It's actually worse for the other classes (Paladin is locked into heavy armor+shield by "free" features, Rogue abilities all require high dex). Casters are still more powerful and versatile by a longshot because they get everything they need for free and all their options are simply gravvy, while virtually no-one has non-combat features of note.

I'm amazed that they took a system design idea that is basicly designed to make every character unique, talents selected every other level instead of fixed class features, and implemented it so badly everyone is the same. That's a really impressive fuckup.

Edit: Hell, there's even a PF1 class, Vigilante, that worked on this and it actually worked even outside of archetypes. It was trivial to play vigilantes that were radically different.

So you can't make a player that is racist, condescending, interrupts people when they are talking, makes people feel uncomfortable...

What stops the player to make a racist character?

The GM if they are a dumbass. Did you listen to the video? It mentions making a Dwarf not like an Elf as possibly offending someone in this context.

This is really stupid; especially in the V:tM case where I understand someone lost their job because of this garbage. But at least the most effect this has is wasting a few pages on the rule book (and maybe making the art "diverse". But this is Pathfinder we are talking about, the art was going to suck no matter what). I wonder if they will eventually say that player parties aren't diverse enough and start giving mechanical advantages for playing characters that are of an uncommon ethnicity/gender/sexual preference/whatever.

Never played in a campaign with queer PCs, we've had girls playing men and the reverse, but meh. I can't be the only one. Maybe it's just the times.

NPCs are another thing, they're not usually the focus, so they can be gay if it helps fuel the fantasies of the DM.

People have been wanting Dreamscarred Press to do that for years now.

Anyone played it?

I don't care about the gay shit but hoo boy is 2e fucking shit as a system. The math is all kinds of wonky, everything is a feat now, all the feats are boring shit banal, the rules aren't written very clearly and the book is a bitch to read. Paizo's forum being full of sycophants trying to silence the opposition doesn't help much.

I've ran two sessions and played in one and feel like that's enough for me.

I'm playing the playtest, and it's about as fun as eating broken glass. As far as I'm concerned the only thing that would save this would be to throw the entire thing in trash and start all over again. Some problems may be fixed yet, but the +1 per level to everything is here to stay, and it just kills this dead for me.

This offends me, as it should offend all! Not liking an Elf is not enough, there must be hatred, there must be thoughtless rage, there must be bloody genocide and long hours of execution for such inhuman filth.

Not liking is a small victory for the Elf and speaks of tolerance, weakness and betrayal. Be strong, be vicious, be uncompromising and abhor the Elf.

Banning all official classes and only allowing DSP's stuff does wonders to make the game much better. The only real problem with it at this point is that only the Vitalist or a Silver Crane specialist (and maybe some of the not incarnum stuff) can give any healing. They're good at it, but it's really centralizing (also only vitalist can heal long term conditions that well).

An egoist built for it can also sort of heal, but obviously not as well as a vitalist.

But yes, Dreamscarred is good. I really like Ultimate Psionics.

Paizo sucks at mechanics. They're infamous for it. Always have been. Pathfinder is not paizo's creation. It's a reskinned D&D 3.5 with some slight tweaks here and there. Seeing them fail when they actually try to create something new doesn't surprise me at all.

Saga Edition managed to make adding your level to most things for non-NPC class characters (to hit, which could be 2/3rds depending on your class, and skills, which were half, were the exceptions) work at all but the highest levels (and officially Luke is only level 12 at the start of Return of the Jedi, only reaching 20 when he's grandmaster of the established new Jedi order). The problem is PF2E throws on additional scaling past that with masterwork/magic items, which Saga edition added these bonuses for the primary purpose of avoiding. Unless you specialized in it, mundane armor replaced your defense scaling so it was only good for low levels, specialist and giving mooks a higher reflex/fortitude despite being NPC classes.

I hate the whole +1 to everything on principal as I like to actually decide what my character is good or bad at. And the actual implementation here is just so bad, ffs they give +1 to AC with each level. When you have a system in which a high enough level character can just stand there, without any magical defenses, naked, blinded, paralyzed, and surrounded by low level guards, and those guards still can't hit him at all, well, that system is crap. The whole game is so mindbogglingly awkward it makes me wonder who the hell is this for? It does not look like a game for fans of Pathfinder / 3.5, so do they seriously think people are going to leave 5E for this? Thanks to the D&D name that would not happen even if this game was good. And it is not.
