Maybe you should worry about the conversations inside your head before deciding whether OW should become more or less competitive instead?

8v8 or more sounds awful. What's the point when a team of 6 already makes full use of all 4 main roles? Do we really need 9v9 matches where each team has 2 tanks and 3 supports?

It would be much simpler with custom games. No actual custom game and dedicated servers for a fps in 2018, that's quite the decline.

I was going to be nice dude but really your a retard and doesnt deserve it. If you think games like this a remotely designed with possibility of anything bigger then 6v6 your a filthy fucking casual whose never play fps games of this nature in his life. Yea dude opinion of first week ow player whose bronze rank doesn't really count stop shoving it down our faces like you have remote clue what your talking about. The size of team is not even in top fucking 100000000000 problems with ow.

I want to address this opinion as well.

competitive overwatch is an oxymoron.

If you play tracer, mccree or widow the game is pretty fucking competitive. What I am trying to say is the game at the core suffers mostly from shit ton of no skill heroes, ults, and shields but is otherwise pretty decent. If blizzard got their what others may call head out of their ass, its totally possible to reverse the decline. For people that don't know OW on release of competitive mode was actually pretty fucking decent and competitive with decent meta even by old school standards. They just fucked it up.

I am not disagreeing as much as I think people who just dismiss OW that easily have not played since beginning to witness the decline of an otherwise promising game that is typical of blizzard. Addition of EVERY hero since release has been net terrible for the game as esport and its enjoyment.

You extoll the virtues of playing Tracer, Cree and Widow, yet fail to note that Ana is not a hero from the original release, but also the healer hero with the highest skill floor and ceiling.

I don't necessarily think every hero should be superpro and hard to play, because these heroes are good gateway characters to newer players and can simply be relaxing to play. Blizzard should still be criticized for leaving the Mercy meta in its state for such a long time, and some other glaring issues, but it's also crying over spilt milk at this point since Mercy was brought up to par.

Then again, the game is just a fun diversion. I confess to not caring much for its e-sports not because the game is dumb or requires no skill, but mostly for the same reasons I could never get into watching FPS tournaments in general (mostly just enjoying stuff like Q3 fragvids) - because it's harder for me to understand the big picture, and the cameramen tend to bounce between characters rather wildly, or focus endlessly on one player.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Overwatch. The skill is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of it will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Tracer's butt outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from an hyperactive xenomorph, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these characters, to realise that they’re not just funny- they do something deep about SHOOTING. As a consequence people who dislike Overwatch truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the deep in Tracer’s existential catchphrase “Cheers love, tha calvalry is here!,” which itself is a cryptic reference to medieval cavalry which tend to support their tropes back in the day. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Jeff Kaplan’s genius wit unfolds itself on their monitor screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Overwatch tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

There are 4 roles in this game: Offense, Defense, Tank, Support. In both competitive and casual, most teams have at least one of each. Am I missing something?
Yeah? I looked over some recent games from the league and most teams are still 2O2T2H.

Because "Offense" and "Defense" is a fairly meaningless moniker that is mostly there to give the new players some sort of an idea as to what the classes are, and in this case, Offense refers to mobile characters with dueling ability and Defense refers to more specialized characters with area denial abilities. It's still not that useful of a distinction though because Widowmaker and Hanzo, for instance, are superior picks on Attacking the first point rather than on Defense in general, since on Attack in a regular 2 Control Point map, the distance you have to cross to return to the contested control point is shorter for the attackers than for the defenders, and the "sniper"* classes excel at scoring picks even if the rest of their skillset is theoretically poor at storming the front or doing mop-up. Widow in particular is also kinda shit at holding the last point because you're confined to defending a large area that you can't often confidently snipe in and she also doesn't do much in the event of a full 6 ult pile-up from the enemy team (Hanzo can at least ult the cart to deny capping attempts), all centralized on a single location (unless she can make up for it with amazing skill).

I'd advise to generally ignore those distinctions; they're mostly hints rather than set-in-stone definitions. D.Va and Roadhog are also tanks, for instance, but they fulfill much different roles than other tanks. The game doesn't distinguish between the "anchor" tanks like Rein and Orisa and "dive" tanks like Winston or D.Va, and it especially won't tell you that a solo pick Roadhog or Zarya might not be a sufficient barrier for your entire team in case you're stuck in another 1T1H4DPS team composition. Same with how Symmetra is the only "Support" character with no heals and how dubious it is that she doesn't share a hero class with Torbjorn, who has a similar skillset (area denial with turret + bonus survivability to the team).

*"Sniper" is also poorly distinguished by the game. Having a healer Ana in the team with Widowmaker isn't "too many snipers", because Ana is simply a healer who heals with bullets.

Except there are custom games.
Ha cool. But why are people asking for 8v8 then ? Competitive 8v8 ?

Calling Gerrard "people" is stretching it. Custom allows for CTF, TDM, FFA, 1v1, some other lulzy game types Blizzard came up with, shit like that. You can block characters, modify their abilities, etc. If it allowed for 8v8 then "people" would ask for 10v10, what's the point of that?

If anything, the real offender is the lack of custom maps, because muh Blizz balance.

Doesn't change the fact that 2/3rds of the characters see barely any fucking play and you had shit like Mercy/Lucio/McCree/Genji being in 99% of competitive games depending on the flavor of the current """balance""" patch.

This situation generally tends to improve overall as patches are added - all tanks are currently played except for Reinhardt and maybe Zarya, for instance, and healers are in a better spot too - and the freeform, "change-your-hero-whenever" (unlike rigid hero selection such as in MOBAs) format means that you can often see oddball strategies, such as Widow to score a pick or a 5 tank comp to storm the first control point on King's Row. That, and generally, outside of superhigh level comp play that's televised and hyped, people at all levels face fairly diverse teamcomps. Heroes that aren't seen much at high level can still be monstrous in your typical pick up and play match even at GM, such as Pharah or even Ana, who's seen better days. And since, as you said, you don't care for the "e-sports", you should be quite content with that.

EDIT: Also Gerrard is a "people" and a very good friend, please stop bully.

And then you get reported and banned for playing off-meta characters.
Every instance of this happening that I'm aware of was accentuated by the offending player being a massive, stubborn cunt for refusing to communicate and threatening to throw. You know, like most one-trick players in most other games. There's still plenty of celebrated players like Kolorblind, who mains Bastion at high rank. There's plenty of GMs that play stuff like Symmetra or Ana and no one is giving them shit. You are absolutely free to main Torbjorn while understanding that 1) Torbjorn isn't a great hero on attack and 2) you are not entitled to playing Torbjorn every game if the team composition needs something else.

Fucking this. There's no point in changing anything if everything is designed around tiny maps and chokepoints. The greatest fun I ever had in overwatch was playing 1vs1 in the arcade. Except for all the games when RNG picked Winston or Symetria.

Yup. People bitch about the class balance but the truth is that most of Overwatch's problems stem from its Dustbowl-esque level design that's there to appeal to casuals that want to be funneled into constant action. Every shitty meta people hate comes from the fact that the only strategies in the game are "push through choke" and "teleport/fly around choke."

It's never going to change because at this point, the only people still actively playing Overwatch are people who more or less agree with the general direction of map design. Everybody else left long ago because it was clear that nothing is going to change, the new maps (like seven in two years lol) are all still spam tubes.

Who's the crazier rocket jockey? Pharah, or Jane Doe?
Who's the better engineer? Torbjörn, or Connagher?
Who is the bigger drunkard? A one-legged Aussie, or a one-eyed Scotsman?
And where does the Spy fit into all of this?
