Btw, do Bridge Officers have qualities beyond experience?
Not sure what you mean. They have skills, that are the active abilities that you can use in space combat. You can train them in new skills from a skill trainer on ESD, or when you put 6 points in a Captain Skill(Depending on Captain's Career) or by uncommissioned bridge officers. Then they have traits that can be active or passive abilities in ground or space. There are Basic, normal and Superior versions of most traits, with Basic being lowest bonuses and Superior with highest.

Efficient used to be a wanted trait, so they might still sell for quite a lot on the exchange, even though they got reduced in effectiveness. Only found on Saurians and Letheans.

The problem is I have is you can get nice traits for the wrong class, like getting a Vulcan Science Officer with Superior Strength meaning is pretty useless to have unless he was a Tactical for Ground away missions.

looks like the autofire was borked in the last update... here's a workaround from the sto forums:

1. Right click all your weapons that you want for autofire ONCE
2. then type the command /defaultautoattack 1
might have to repeat that, to get the weapons you actually want to autofire to be marked, but otherwise it works

Hell, I didn't even know there was an autoattack. That would've cut down on my clickety clack mousing a bunch. Used to use keyboard for weapons, but at about 7 of them I gave up fucking with that and went to clicks.

Had to do a bunch of mixing and matching between Phoenix, Cerberus and Prometheus parts, but the U.S.S. Dentdelion is her own design. Shame she blows up if I breathe too hard.

Want to have some fun? Enroll yourself in a fleet action against a high level space bugger who breaks apart into hordes of smaller buggers who can rip right through your shields and hit your hull directly. Did I mention that if you don't destroy them, they go back and the original regens all the health you hit him for in the first place?

Now, imagine a large group of people who decide to...float around firing at him for twenty minutes, and not getting the hint. *Chunks break off and attack the fleet* *Most of the fleet ignores them other than to dodge or destroy the ones that get too close* On and on and on. At the 25 minute mark I just left.

You know, that's a pretty familiar encounter...

The Romulan Temple ground FA is just as bad. Hordes and hordes of Roms, and if you get a group who does nothing but run around blasting and ignoring team mechanics, good luck cause ain't shit getting done. The first couple tasks? Sure, you can wing it using using them as fodder and distraction. But grabbing the generators to power the shields? Hah, try and go off to do that on your own.

All Fleet Actions, ground or space have instances where the idiots get themselves killed off. But the Crystalline Entity and the Romulan Temple are just impossible without a coordinating group.

you're supposed to dodge the regular ones, lure the large ones away, destroy those and then kill off the small ones before they reach the entity all while you keep shooting the entity... only the small ones heal it (1% per shard that reaches the entity) and they only spawn once you destroy a large one... the large ones only spawn, once the entity drops below 33%... plus the entity auto-heals 3% every 40 seconds

also: even knowing all that and with a team that knows all that, it is nearly impossible to do that... and not at all worth all the trouble

also also:
btw.: don't do the Romulan temple ground pve engagement thing... it's horrible and the guy who made that map should be forced to play it 24/7 until he begs to get shot (shouldn't take long)

I was in a group that actually killed it (it was a blast). But yeah. Finding an organized group to actually kill it is difficult, as well as people who can grief that encounter sadly.

Crystalline Entity is a really a un-fun boss for two reasons, first is regen bosses are always a a pain to deal with (if you want to do at least put caps on it, like when it reaches 33% it can regen but never above 33%) and second, it can only be done with a good group that leads to the problem with STO being very much a Escort game, it really favors DPS.

Besides it only needs a jackass to screw it.

Also STO really needs to either scale to your group level, remove player number limits and/or keep players under level out of it, like with Borg Incursions were its too common to see Tier I and II ships answering the call in Sirus.

So I finally got the damn thing to work. Turns out the trick is to get the Steam version and not the one from the website. So are any of you paying for subscriptions or using the free content only? Or buying stuff with actual money? Seems like you need a bajillion Kryptic Kredits for everything except the most basic uniforms, bridges and ships. I just kind of have a thing against paying for virtual posessions with real money.

Anyone who has been playing the game for ages, has it improved a lot since release, or has it always been like this? Because from what I see it's pretty addictive and fun, not deserving of all the bad press.

non-steam version working fine for me
STO actually is the most free of the f2p mmos i've tried... you don't get the pay-for-this-or-lose-out feeling anywhere (you get your level appropriate ship for free once you get promoted)
haven't played before it turned f2p, but i've been following it (since i'm a bit of a trekkie)... it got a lot better eventhough there are still many glitches and bugs

I know about the free ships, but many stay locked until you buy the credits, no matter what your rank is. I haven't been playing that long (only level 10 now) but still.. I think the Excelsior class and that bad-ass looking Galaxy Class with the extra nacelle are some examples. Same with the TOS Constitution class (not that anyone would want that hunk o' junk).

The game plays very fast and loose with the Star Trek canon obviously but it's still fun. Only thing I have a major problem with is all the different currencies. The Federation is supposed to use no currency, not fucking 4 types. Actually I heard it used to be 7 before they merged some into Dilithium. That and the random disconnects/crashes or bugs like warping into a system with nothing in it. But from what I've read the ground missions have been improved and the Duty Officer system is completely new. That would certainly change the game a lot.

Downloading this now and going to give it a try. Any advice for what faction to chose, or good things to do to get the game started?

You MUST choose Federation first Xeno. You unlock your second free char slot at 24, and that char must be Klingon Empire. Additional char slots bought can be either Fed or Klingon (if KDF is unlocked).

Also, what you need to know is that your Class and your Ship do not have a major influence on each other. Your Class is first and foremost what you do on Ground when you apply your Kit, which is essentially your special abilities (Tactical = DPS, Engineer = Summoner DPS/Summoner-Tank, Science = Debuffer/Healer-Tank, that's the short of it). In Space, what matters more than anything are two things: Your Ship (Escort = DPS, Cruiser = Tank, Science Vessel = Buffer-Debuffer), and your Bridge Officers (who will be your array of special abilities). Space Skills are identical for all Classes (though only a specific class unlocks new training options for Bridge Officer abilities due to skill levels, ie only Science captains can teach Hazard Emitters III and only Tactical captains can teach Overload Beam III; Otherwise you need to either buy the abilities or use a non-commisioned Bridge Officer to teach one of their abilities).

But the most important thing to do is list your char and username here so someone can send you an invite to our chat channel, ImmateriumChat.

Those things are Premium ships, actually. Like Premium races, they are the meat of the revenue for Cryptic.

And screw you buddy, I bought the TOS Constitution. There's a kicker in buying it too as well: It gives you Rare front and aft phaser banks THAT SCALE WITH YOUR LEVEL (= awesome).

The way I see it, Energy Credits reflect other resources you have at your disposal, like power to run replicators and so forth. As far as I know, Gold-plated Latinum is a space jew thing, and it's actually not a primary currency but more of a token system. Dilithium is fairly obvious.

Also, I'm the only one "sort of subscribed", which is why we have our own private chat channel. Being a Lifer in Champions gives me that right forever and ever, and the private chat channel exists on both Champions and STO (yes, we can talk across different games with it).

Well, there's only the Federation and Klingons. And you need a lvl 25 Federation character before you can create a Klingon one.

As for tips: Combat in story missions is easy. Do not go into fleet battles expecting the same. You will get your ass handed to you.

Edit: Vaarna, is there any way to get that phaser separately? Or do you have to spend actual Kwabucks on the ship?

Well, that's good.

And Zarni, those two phaser banks are only for Kwabucks, or if you trade Dilithium for Kwabuck equivalents.

There is a thread at the STO forums about strange ship names and someone posted this:

I've seen something to the effect of Captain Fap of the U.S.S. Faperprise and Captain JewGold of the U.S.S. Hitler.

I reported both in game so hopefully both incidents were taken care of.

So which codexers were these?

Did anybody else have issues trying to create an account? I keep being told that each deal is invalid (even though it shouldn't be according to the little instruction boxes) and that I didn't agree to the ToS even though I did.

Edit: Nevermind. Seems that my Firefox just hated their website worked fine in IE.

I am xenomorphii0 there. Character name Xeno, ship is USS Spartenos.

I like away missions myself. But more than anything, one thing makes Ground missions the most awesome aspect of the game:

Klingon Bridge Officer dropkicking Gorn in the balls and doesn't afraid of anything!
