For what it's worth, a lot of thought went into this one and it's the only interesting mobile game being released right now. They even got Katsuya Terada to do the art for the monsters and villains to continue the tradition. The director acknowledges that a smartphone game cannot function as a sequel to Wizardy and concedes with Daphne to make it clear it's a side entry/gaiden, but the real issue is whether the monetization/gacha system removes the appeal of playing a Wizardy to begin with by replacing character creation with whatever this game is doing.

Anyways, play the Five Ordeals

Gacha? Ugh! I have 12 wizardry clones I believe on my iphone that do not have gachas. I need to review them next I guess.

I actually have no idea what the monetization system is for Daphne, but I agree with your reaction already. We already saw how Wizrogue ended up

I'm assuming they're selling appearance sets for the characters and they're one-time purchases. At least that doesn't indicate a gacha at all, which is better than expected.

Wizrogue operated on a gacha system and you needed to roll certain classes and unique "hero" types representing them to clear deeper floors, and well, that ended up being repackaged and sold as a singleplayer game on steam which was eventually delisted (due to the license being a spaghetti mess at the time I'm guessing).

I think they might be party members to recruit. There's something about finding bones of the dead to resurrect.

Why is everyone pointing weapons at me? Maybe it is the Princess Nudes on my phone I'm looking at. Sheesh... ya know fuck em. Bunch of assholes anyway.

Ok, overkill on the hair in the dwarf's eyes. Good lord. "I canna see a damn ting. WTH?!!"

Maybe it is a wig helmet for the chronically bald dwarf.

Make the Codex Great Again!
aweigh had mentioned there are several untranslated Wiz games, and I thought I'd see what I could do. I made good initial progress hacking and translating Wedge of Life for the Nintendo DS. Didn't bother adjusting the font yet. It's all very synthwave. Seems like a big undertaking though. There's a surprising amount of dialogue. Since its sequel, Legacy of Oblivion, uses the same engine, the techniques for hacking it are all the same, except the files have to be decompressed and recompressed.

Ooooohhhh!!!!

Matron tugs on the leash and lashes with threats.

She'll be back.....

Later, as he and his band traverse the road near the river he sees a familiar site floating down the middle towards the falls...... it is indeed his bed!

It will have gacha.

Everyone will get one priest quarantee remains and one thief quarantee remains. Makes sense considering how important healing is. But honestly i think they should add one quarantee to all classes. Also i dont exactly know what this means, are they just skins or do they also have prerolled stats.

Im suprised how popular wizardry is as it already has over 200 000 pre-registered players. I always thought it would had like max 10-30k fans. So there is actually decent audience for dungeon crawlers, and that is nice to see.

Is this going to be online only? Pre-registered "players?" Oh fuck sub fees and fuck anything if gacha online only. I'm sick of that shit.

What would people here say are the best Wizardry-likes of all time?

Including Japanese and Western releases?

I've had a fascination with the genre ever since I came across Ancients II as a kid.

Elminage Gothic. Take your time, it´s a gigantic game with a lot of dungeons and the first ones are the worst part of the game, specially the first. I would use the infinite map cheat unless you are a vampire billionaire with infinite time.

If you want something less hardcore but pretty solid overall and with good art: Stranger On Sword City.

What do you mean the first dungeons are the worse? Size? Difficulty? Other?

Which dungeons exactly?

Wizardry 8

:troll:

-Wizards and Warriors.

-FATE Gates of Dawn

-GrimWah

I couldn't get into Eliminage. I made it about halfway through Stranger of Sword City before losing my save to a hard drive crash, and I didn't feel like replaying. I made it a little ways into Undernauts before I satisfied my last blobber urge.

Something about Japanese Wizardries feels so low budget and ultra-grindy. We had animated sprites on Super Nintendo JRPGs, FFS.

I'm playing Wizardry Daphne, it's quite nice. Played about 1h, explored the first dungeon floor and killed the first boss. Very nice presentation and controls overall, really makes me wish for a proper Wizardry for PCs...

As for the gacha stuff, you find/buy bones of adventures you resurrect using your magical powers. At first seems easy, you get like 20 free characters from the start.... But they have passive skills, spells and abilities that are learned by fusing them with other characters. So even if you are happy with the first fighter you get, you'll want to get more characters with good skills to feed into your fighter.

Loot is also gacha, you find broken remains in treasures & quests rewards are must be "recovered" using your power. So the real question is if you can you beat the endgame without paying / farming for gacha drops.

One thing that is really clever is the presentation. They solved the "blobber" thing by making so that you are an actual character that explores & attacks in 1st person, but your party is right next to you. You can't see them while exploring, but they will appear during combat - melee fighters run to attack, archers, mages and clerics step beside you to shoot arrows / cast spells. Also, the whole party is visible around you once the battle is over, doing a sort of celebration (kinda like in Dragon's Dogma 2). Cool stuff, would like to see this sort of presentation in more blobbers in the future.

I fucking died from a pile of junk. It wasn't all that intuitive on what to do tbh. And you can red with w/e ho you had left and as a ghul you don't heal. And then a goblin and raised again with 1hp. I just accepted death and it restarts the tutorial? Bleh...
