Try saying it to his face.

By the way, what kind of weapons will the Codex be learning to use next ? Two-handed swords are a good starting choice, as Lilarcor's a very good weapon early in the game. But even if he kills Firkraag next, the Codex won't be able to use Carsomyr (until he gets Use Any Item, if he ever does). Soul Reaver and the Vorpal Sword won't be available anytime soon and, while they're decent, they're not awesome.
I missed this question back in the day, sorry.
Next weapon upgrades will be Staff of the Magi (to replace Lilarcor), Tansheron's Bow (for ranged combat) and the cheesy +5 slingshot (to kill golems). I don't think any other weapons will be needed until I get the big three (Carsomyr/Vorpal Sword/Gesen's Bow).

The Codex should be able to use Carsomyr before getting Soul Reaver, so we'll probably skip this one, although I might try some Harbringer wackiness, if I can bump up my fire resistance to 100%.

Update #16: Bad Religion, Part II - Easier Than Expected

bg2_up16_000.jpg

codex_10.jpg
More sewers? I thought you said we were done with them?

This is only technically a sewer, we will meet no more of the enemies from the previous area.

codex_10.jpg
I can live with that.

bg2_up16_001.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I would like to retract my previous statement. Bring back goblins and kobolds if you have to, but DON'T MAKE ME FIGHT MEPHITS FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

bg2_up16_002.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh great, it's a farting mephit too. And just when I tought they could not get any more annoying.

At least there's only one. Besides, we also have some shadows sneaking up behind Your back.

codex_10.jpg
Did someone already tell you that you suck at comforting?

bg2_up16_003.jpg

codex_10.jpg
DIE!

It seems that Shadows' attack cause some kind of status effect.

bg2_up16_004.jpg

Apparently they are draining Your strength.

codex_10.jpg
I do feel kind of weak, but thought it was just general discouragament from seeing that mephit.

bg2_up16_005.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Still have enough strength to do this!

bg2_up16_006.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It's a dead end.

We'll need to check other corridors then. Luckily, since it's not a Mass Effect game, we have more than one to chose.

bg2_up16_007.jpg

codex_10.jpg
We won't be choosing this one, though.

There was another one near the entrance.

bg2_up16_008.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh-Kay. This totally does not look like a trap room.

bg2_up16_009.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And yet there were no traps. Something is fishy.

Watch out for the shadows.

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, yeah, I know. let me just retreat a little, and...

bg2_up16_010.jpg

codex_10.jpg
...Oh fuck.

bg2_up16_011.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ouch! Bad dogs! Fuck off!

bg2_up16_012.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Here, have some ice! FUCK! Why isn't this working better!?

bg2_up16_013.jpg

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT!? WHO WHO WHO WHO!
Um, sorry about that.

Death Count: 94

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
I hate dogs.

Look at the bright side, at least You were right about that trap.

codex_10.jpg
I hate being right.

bg2_up16_014.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I will show them what it means to anger a demigod!

bg2_up16_015.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Show me what you got!

Funny, the Hell Hounds did not appear this time. I think You've wasted your ability.

codex_10.jpg
Wasted?

bg2_up16_016.jpg

codex_10.jpg
FUCKYEAH, SLAUGHTER! See, not wasted at all.

bg2_up16_017.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I think I found the "release the hounds" button.

Are You going to? To take revenge, and stuff?

bg2_up16_018.jpg

codex_10.jpg
No. Fuck them.

It is kind of weird that You missed this trap before. Maybe You're losing Your touch?

codex_10.jpg
I'll show you what it means to lose touch when I chop your hands off and them to you through your nose.

bg2_up16_019.jpg

Watch out, another Shadow.

codex_10.jpg
Just one? not worth attention.

Unless it's Ender's Shadow.

codex_10.jpg
Well, yes. But it's not.

bg2_up16_020.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh, look, it brought friends.

bg2_up16_021.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Done. Flawless victory.

Check again.

bg2_up16_022.jpg

They did drain You a little.

codex_10.jpg
Minor setback. I will be back to normal in no time. Let's move on.

bg2_up16_023.jpg

codex_10.jpg
On the other hand, maybe I should stay in this here spot for a few moments.

After a brief, our hero embarks on his epic journey once again.

bg2_up16_024.jpg

Only to end up in new trouble seconds later.

codex_10.jpg
Wait, it's a chamber and it's full of poisonous gas. This must mean...

Please don't. We worked so hard not to say this back in update #14.

codex_10.jpg
I'm The Codex. I can say anything I want!

bg2_up16_025.jpg

codex_10.jpg
'Perhaps turning it will reveal its function'? Gee, I don't know, is that possible? Fucking retards.

bg2_up16_026.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Cool, but these white dudes are still blocking my way out.

bg2_up16_027.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, it hurts.

Potion time.

bg2_up16_028.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm not really sure how does fighting mist with a sword work, but whatever.

We ended up using two potions, if someone cares.

codex_10.jpg
Here's a hint: nobody does.

bg2_up16_029.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I know, Lilarcor, I know.

I think we've reached out destination.

codex_10.jpg
Time to engage my keen investigation skills and learn what is going on here.

bg2_up16_030.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ok, this was easy. Can we go back now and finish this quest up?

Of course not.

codex_10.jpg
Figures.

Spoiler tag below contains the plot of the new part of the quest.

codex_10.jpg
Here's the summary: go somewhere and kill shit and then kill more shit. Oh, and bring something back while you're there.

bg2_up16_031.jpg

bg2_up16_032.jpg

bg2_up16_033.jpg

bg2_up16_034.jpg

bg2_up16_035.jpg

The item description above is a good TL;DR version of the conversation with Gaal.

codex_10.jpg
So, these guys are worshipping a beholder...

bg2_up16_036.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Wasn't I supposed to just investigate the cult? I could go back to the temple now and report my findings.

We should make sure if the cult is evil before doing that.

bg2_up16_037.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Well, I guess they could prove to be pretty harmless. Just a bunch of weirdoes living in the sewers and plucking each other's eyes out. I mean, they are hiding behind an army of shadows and hell hounds, as well as locking potential visitors in a chamber full of poisonous gas, but that's all reasonable caution in times like ours.

bg2_up16_038.jpg

codex_10.jpg
They're evil.

Yup.

codex_10.jpg
We're still going to run their errands?

Yup.

codex_10.jpg
I hate my job...

bg2_up16_039.jpg

codex_10.jpg
...but it does have its perks.

Spoiler tag below contains the details of our looting in the cult chambers. If you're interested, check it out, but it's mostly minor stuff, so there is no point in commenting every screenshot.

bg2_up16_040.jpg

bg2_up16_041.jpg

bg2_up16_043.jpg

bg2_up16_049.jpg

bg2_up16_050.jpg

bg2_up16_044.jpg

One of the nicer things we found, was the Animate Dead spell.

codex_10.jpg
Won't be using it, unless I can summon at least vampires.

bg2_up16_046.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This one is ok, but I still prefer cloudkill.

bg2_up16_047.jpg

Both spells are added to The Codex' repertoire.

bg2_up16_048.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So, why exactly are you guarding this pit? Afraid someone will climb back out of it?

bg2_up16_051.jpg

Gaal's key allows us to enter the previously unavailable corridor.

bg2_up16_052.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Of course, Haal forgot to mention that there was a trap directly behind the door.

Gaal. He must have forgotten.

codex_10.jpg
Or he's a dick. Either way, he dies for this.

bg2_up16_053.jpg

Appropriately, we got a Thief level up after disarming the trap.

codex_10.jpg

bg2_up16_054.jpg

Thief level ups are not really giving us anything substantial (although every hit point helps). Basically, we are waiting to reach level 20 and start getting epic abilities.

bg2_up16_055.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Looks like the unseeing eye cult had a schism already, so they are a proper religion after all.

The rest of the latest plot development is hidden in the spoiler tag.

bg2_up16_056.jpg

bg2_up16_057.jpg

bg2_up16_058.jpg

bg2_up16_059.jpg

bg2_up16_060.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I wonder what's inside the sarcophagus here.

bg2_up16_061.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oops.

Why do You have to touch everything!

bg2_up16_062.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I don't really care about your inane bulshit. Do we part ways in peace, or will The Codex have to choke a lich?

bg2_up16_063.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Very well, then.

bg2_up16_064.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Clever idea with that shadow clone there, but the ring of fire kind of gives away where you really are.

bg2_up16_065.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Still invisible. Damn.

bg2_up16_066.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Since I can't hurt you for the moment, I might as well buff myself.

bg2_up16_067.jpg

Not good, not good.

bg2_up16_068.jpg

codex_10.jpg
WTF just happened?

He stopped time and cast a couple of spells on You, but fortunately, You resisted them both.

codex_10.jpg
He stopped what? Fuck. Remind me not to fight any more liches in the future.

Yeah, I'll make sure to do that.

bg2_up16_069.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Here, have some ring of the ram!

bg2_up16_070.jpg

It seems to have annoyed him a little.

codex_10.jpg
And again with the shadow clone!

bg2_up16_071.jpg

We actually summoned a fire elemental here (using the Staff of Fire), but it did not live long enough to be captured in the screenshot.

codex_10.jpg
This guy is really annoying, I have to say!

bg2_up16_072.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh crap.

bg2_up16_073.jpg

Again with the Maze thing. We'll need to deal with it somehow.

Death Count: 95

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
I hate maze.

I figured You might.

codex_10.jpg
Since the lich is a cheating bastard, I will use all my metagaming skills against him.

bg2_up16_074.jpg

codex_10.jpg
First, I'll predict exactly where he appears and summon some help.

bg2_up16_075.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Second, prepare myself.

bg2_up16_076.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Third, summon more help.

It is worth noting, that we then moved the fire elemental out of immediate vicinity of the lich.

bg2_up16_077.jpg

So, the Lich appears and quickly offs our Air Elemental.

codex_10.jpg
That takes care of the death spell, but we still need to force him to use the maze.

bg2_up16_078.jpg

codex_10.jpg
But first, I'll dispel him a little.

bg2_up16_079.jpg

Our Lesser Fire Elemental serves as a meatshield, or rather fireshield, for both Symbol spells after Time Stop.

bg2_up16_080.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Time to ram things up!

bg2_up16_081.jpg

That does it for the elemental.

codex_10.jpg
Banshee! :x

bg2_up16_082.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Good thing this fire staff has mutliple charges, so there's plenty of volunteers to get mazed instead of me.

bg2_up16_083.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Haha, casting sunfire on a fire elemental? Desperate or stupid?

bg2_up16_084.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And here goes the maze.

bg2_up16_085.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh yeah!

Improved Mantle is an awesome spell, but it has a pretty short duration.

bg2_up16_086.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Shit, another contigency? How many of them does this guy have?

bg2_up16_087.jpg

codex_10.jpg
FUCK!

Run away!

codex_10.jpg
Retreat, you mean?

Of course.

bg2_up16_088.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hopefully, we can kill the lich before we run out of elementals.

bg2_up16_089.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Better you than me, LFEs.

For the record, we sent two elementals against the lich.

bg2_up16_090.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And let's see what you say about that.

nishruu.gif
Yum yum!

bg2_up16_091.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I can almost hear the lich's curses and screams of panic.

bg2_up16_092.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It won't hurt to summon another LFE, just to be sure.

bg2_up16_093.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ok, this is cheating. You shouldn't be able to cast protection from magical weapons if you already are immune to normal weapons!

I think Liches are exempt from this limitation.

codex_10.jpg
Of course.

bg2_up16_094.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's try a different approach, then.

bg2_up16_095.jpg

efreeti_small.gif
How may I serve you, master?

codex_10.jpg
Alright! Let's see if you have any useful spells.

bg2_up16_096.jpg

efreeti_small.gif
Die, foul undead!

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, what he said.

bg2_up16_097.jpg

codex_10.jpg
FUCK YEAH, Lilarcor! Good job!

lilarcor1_zps515e106b.jpg
Sure thing, boss.

bg2_up16_098.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh, fuck you, traitorous scum!

bg2_up16_099.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And he disappeared before I could kill him. :decline:

bg2_up16_100.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Why would I want to... Oh, wait I've just remembered I kept even the armor made from human skin, so I guess anything goes.

bg2_up16_102.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I wonder if this has any use...

bg2_up16_103.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So, if LFE went forward, would he get caught in the trap?

Do You want to check?

codex_10.jpg
And miss out on the trap disarm XP? No.

bg2_up16_104.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Go get them, LFE!

bg2_up16_105.jpg

It seems that these Shadows and Wraiths can drain levels. I forgot about that.

codex_10.jpg
All the better I have my amulet, then.

bg2_up16_106.jpg

codex_10.jpg
That's it for LFE. These things really suck at tanking.

bg2_up16_107.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes! However, as I don't feel very confident about this encounter...

bg2_up16_108.jpg

codex_10.jpg
...It won't hurt to slow these guys a bit.

bg2_up16_109.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Okay, done.

bg2_up16_110.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I guess nobody gave me the key for this one yet.

bg2_up16_111.jpg

codex_10.jpg
A stairway down? I thought we were already underground. What can lie below?

This mystery will be solved in the next update!

----------
Next time: As I said, we will solve the mystery of what lies beneath the underground of Atkhatla's Temple District.

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, what the fuck. It's as if nobody really cares what you say... Oh wait! Nobody does!

Let me rephrase the above. Next time: The Codex dies a lot.

codex_10.jpg
Hey!
We are still accepting suggestions as to which quest The Codex should do next, so feel free to post if You have any preference.

He needs 4+ weapon, right? He could metagame and pick up a quarterstaff in the merchants quarter for that, cheesy as it might be. Or he could get those epic rogue levels first, then go for a certain special sword, hoping to fool it, then wield that. :smug:

I don't like the Kangaxx fight, to be frank. It doesn't require quick thinking or clever tactics, just knowing what to expect and preparing accordingly. If you don't, you're sure to lose. If you do, victory is almost certain, but tedious.

I'm sorry, I can't hear You over the buzzing sound of awesome emanating from Ring of Gaxx.

EDIT:
Actually, I agree. We will need the ring, though.

Well, if we're going to kick Kangaxx in the... skull (where else ?), we might as well use the Scroll of Maximum Cheese Protection vs Magic. It probably lasts long enough to defend our hero against the second lich too.

There are few 'legitimate' ways to defeat a demilich, really, and that's mostly 'cause they're not really anything more than a gimmick enemy. It's mostly just win if you're immune to imprisonment, or lose if you're not. You could somewhat legitimize it by using one of the two Protection from Magic scrolls, rather than one of the relatively common Protection from Undead ones, or by using some spell to protect yourself, but it's still equally binary. I guess you could swarm him with summons and hope you beat him to death before he targets you, but he does have the mass kill spell. Helps if you have one of the save-or-die anti-undead weapons, I guess.

The greatest fun to be had with demiliches, really, is in figuring out how to kill them the first time.

Yes, it was. /single tear of nostalgia

If I don't figure out some new (or obscure enough) way to defeat him to make it look fresh, I will at least try (and fail) to make comments interesting/funny, so it is not boring.

So, have we reached a consensus that we're going after the demilich next, or should I again choose at random from the suggestions (Druid Grove, Mae'vars Guild, Firkraag, Kangaxx and whatever other ideas appear until we start the next quest)? I'm leaning towards the latter, since it makes things more unpredictable.*

*and technically only TOME actively voted for Kangaxx, so all options are equally supported at the moment

Go for Firkraag. Even if you win against Gangaxx, ring of Gaxx is such a cheese is would make things too easy for codex.

Kangaxx is fine for me... But only if you will fight that vampire/beholder/lich party in bridge district during completing Kangaxx body :smug:

Twisted Rune is a separate quest, but doing it first will significantly boost The Codex' fighting chance against Kangaxx, because they have Staff of the Magi (which works as a +5 weapon).
