Ultima VI Part 4

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 4

In this section we will get a few more runes, liberate a shrine or two, and engage in acts of utter depravity.

First off, let's read the hint that Chuckles left for us in Nystul's room.

ultimavi0457.png

It looks like the plant in the Slaughtered Lamb is not the only plant in Britannia concealing valuable loot. In the beginning of the game, Geoffrey suggested heading for Cove to glean information from the group of knights sent to retake the Shrine of Compassion. I head east out of Britain.

ultimavi0458.png

I encounter some trolls while crossing a bridge. Some things never change.

ultimavi0459.png
ultimavi0460.png

Well, at least it has some nice loot!

ultimavi0461.png

Kafiristan Pass?! What the hell, Origin?!

ultimavi0462.png

The Long Haul.

I make a wrong turn and end up heading nearly back to Nicodemus's house. I then teleport back to Britain and head directly east.

ultimavi0469.png

It looks like the Shrine of Compassion is standing between us and Cove. It looks like we will have to fight our way through. This is my first encounter with winged gargoyles. They are a lot tougher than the grunts, and they can move faster and cast spells. One or two of them are still not that hard to take down.

ultimavi0470.png

After I kill all the gargoyles, I try to approach the Shrine of Compassion, but a weird force field is blocking the way.

ultimavi0471.png

Dispel Field does not get rid of it. Maybe I could try using the Rune of Compassion.

ultimavi0472.png

I use the rune and recite the Mantra of Compassion, MU. Suddenly, the screen goes funny . . .

ultimavi0473.png

. . . and the force field around the shrine is gone.

ultimavi0474.png

I grab the moonstone atop the altar. I don't know if it will be good for anything.

ultimavi0475.png

ultimavi0476.png

ultimavi0477.png

I can now meditate at the Shrine of Compassion. Instead of going to see LB whenever I level-up, I now must meditate at shrines when I get enough XP to ascend to a new level. In addition to the usual HP bonus, I get a one-point bonus to whichever attributes' (Intelligence, Dexterity and Strength) correspond to the Principles (Truth, Love and Courage) that embody the specific virtue. This means that, if I meditate at the Shrine of Compassion when I reach level 6, my Dexterity would increase by 1. Since this is lame, I hold off on grinding for levels.

I head east some more and finally arrive in Cove.

u6cove.png

Here is a map. It is a pretty small place. I head for the healer and speak with one of the caretaker's, Ahrmaand.

ultimavi079.png
ultimavi0480.png
ultimavi0481.png

Basically, he is saying that I need the eight runes to liberate the eight shrines. Yeah, I have figured that out by now.

ultimavi0482.png

I speak to Gertan, but he does not say much. I then head to the northeastern part of town.

ultimavi0483.png

I wonder what kind of beast they are talking about?

ultimavi0484.png

Awww! That's a cute widdle dwagon!

ultimavi0485.png

This is Rudyom, another spell merchant. The only interesting spells (that I can cast) that are not available elsewhere are the Seance (which has been useless as far as I can tell) spell and the Pickpocket spell (Awesome!). It is now time to liberate more shrines! I throw the orb 2 S 1 W to get to the Shrine of Honor.

ultimavi0496.png

I dispatch all the enemies present.

ultimavi0497.png

Weird! I need to try this weapon out.

ultimavi0498.png

I use the Rune of Honor and chant the Mantra (SUMM) to dispel the forcefield around the Shrine of Honor and then grab the moonstone. I then throw the orb 2 North and 2 East to arrive in Jhelom.

u6jhelom.png

I then try my hand at a bit of looting.

ultimavi0499.png

Okay, I unlock the steel door. Everything is going just fine.

ultimavi0500.png

Shit! There is a gas trap that poisons over half my party. Worst of all is that there is just a well here. WTF?! I now head for the mayor's office to see what shit I have to do to get the Rune of Valor.

ultimavi0501.png

u6zellivan.jpg
I am Zellivan, and I am lord here. Pray tell me thy name.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Elzair.

u6zellivan.jpg
Please feel at home in this town.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6zellivan.jpg
The valorous are often boisterous. I watch over the fighters.

ultimavi0502.png
ultimavi0503.png
ultimavi0504.png

I do just that.

ultimavi0506.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Rune.

ultimavi0507.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Tale.

ultimavi0508.png
ultimavi0509.png
ultimavi0510.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Rat.

ultimavi0511.png
ultimavi0512.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Hole.

ultimavi0513.png
ultimavi0514.png
ultimavi0515.png

Well, shit! It looks like I need to find some way of fitting through that hole. I wonder who is small enough to do it . . .

ultimavi0516.png

This old beggar will be useful later, but for now he is just an easy way to offload excess cash.

ultimavi0517.png

The tavern minstrel tells me the Mantra of Pride (which is the inverse of the Mantra of Humility).

ultimavi0522.png

Culham sings the Mantra of Valor, RA. I then speak to the waitress Lyssandra (a.k.a. 'Andy')

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6lyssandra.jpg
It's Lyssandra, but ye can call me Andy.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6lyssandra.jpg
I take orders for drinks, $2.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Andy.

u6lyssandra.jpg
I know 'tis a boy's name, but I like it all the same.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Sword & Keg.

u6lyssandra.jpg
Sometimes 'tis rough here but I doesn't mind. Some day I'll be a fighter, ye know.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Brawls.

ultimavi0524.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Rat.

u6lyssandra.jpg
Shhh! She glances about to see if you have been overheard.See yon hole in the north wall? Look carefully at where floor and wall meet. That's where it took the rune! They tried all manner of tricks to get it out but they all failed. I had an idea, but nobody listened to me.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Idea.

ultimavi0525.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
You mean Sherry the Mouse? Yeah.

ultimavi0526.png

So, we just need to convince Sherry to tag along for a little while.

ultimavi0527.png

You can see the mouse hole at the top left of the screen. I now teleport back to Britain.

ultimavi0529.png

Since I have eaten up all my food packs, I have no cheese to bribe Sherry with, so I steal some from the Blue Boar.

ultimavi0530.png

I cast Help to make my getaway. As usual I find Sherry crawling around the southwest corner of the castle.

ultimavi0540.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Join.

ultimavi0542.png

Well, I now have six party members, but Sherry will not be staying long. I then teleport back to Jhelom and reenter the pub.

ultimavi0543.png

I switch to solo mode with Sherry. I then maneuver her into the mouse hole.

ultimavi0544.png

Well, well, well. What do we have here?

ultimavi0545.png

A ring of invisibility is always a nice thing to have.

ultimavi0546.png

I now have four of the eight runes. I am moving out! While Sherry is in the party, I am going to do something a little naughty. I warp to Trinsic.

ultimavi0548.png

The mayor of Trinsic, Whitsaber, will tell me the Mantra of Honor, SUMM. I head north out of town and come across a camp of gypsies.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Not again!

ultimavi0551.png
ultimavi0550.png
ultimavi0552.png

This guy will spar with me for a while (I don't think it does anything), but he will take the opportunity to steal 15-25 gold. Gypsies, you can't trust 'em.

Further away is his sister. She is a bit more interesting . . .

ultimavi0555.png
ultimavi0556.png
ultimavi0558.png

Alright, now comes the fun part.

Certain special conditions need to be in place for this to work. Let me take a moment to save the game, and then I will introduce you to Ultima VI's built-in cheat menu. To enable it, I have to talk to Iolo and say Spam, Spam, Spam, and Humbug.

ultimavi0567.png
ultimavi0568.png
ultimavi0569.png

This is the main cheating menu. With it, I can instantly create any item in the game, modify the stats of all party members, and do some other cool stuff. I am not using this for the actual game; I am just using it to fuck around (literally).

I select option 4.

ultimavi0570.png

I select option 1.

ultimavi0571.png

These are all my stats. I choose option 4.

ultimavi0572.png

HAHAHA!! I am now a titan among men!

ultimavi0574.png
ultimavi0575.png
ultimavi0576.png

This will create one spell scroll that will add all the spells in the game to my spell book.

ultimavi0577.png

I then move the uber scroll into my spell book. I am now a god among mortals!

ultimavi0579.png

Look at all those spells, and those are just from the first level! Now that I am all powerful, all my companions (except Sherry) are obstacles that must be removed. I get right on that.

ultimavi0580.png

Iolo, Shamino and Dupre are no match for Death Wind.

ultimavi0581.png

I then proceed to Kill (get it?) Jaana. Now, no one stands between me and my lesbian-bestiality fantasies!

ultimavi0582.png

I have trouble getting to sleep at night, so I drink an orange potion.

NOTE: For some reason, Ultima VI has inverted the uses of orange (awaken) and blue (sleep) potions. It is rather odd.

Now Sherry is in charge, and boy is she going to be a naughty rat.

ultimavi0584.png

u6sherry.jpg
Wicked.

ultimavi0591.png
ultimavi0592.png
ultimavi0593.png

What the hell?! Is this an inner monologue!!

ultimavi0594.png
ultimavi0595.png

That is one dirty rat! Let's get rid of it!

ultimavi0596.png

Oh, Jesus Christ, no!

As much fun as that little powertrip was, it is time to reload back to boring ol' level 5.

Damn, can't believe I forgot this thread was here. Epic! UV is still my favorite CRPG of all time; I love the way that the cities and other sites are built, and how LB and the Shadow Lords pop up unexpectedly. It had awesome writing (better than UIV obviously) and the interactivity with maps (including dungeon rooms) was amazing. Wish I had been here early to follow along...

Ultima VI Part 5

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 5

With that amusing diversion out of the way, it is time to take back all the shrines!

Since I just got the Rune of Valor in the last update, I will warp to the Shrine of Valor (1N 2E).

ultimavi0597.png

Die, Daemon Scum!

ultimavi0598.png

ultimavi0599.png

I hold the Rune of Valor in my hand and chant 'RA' to lower the magical barriers and retrieve a moonstone.

Since I haven't yet seen what the sheepfu-- I mean the humble inhabitants of New Magincia are up to, I teleport there (2W) to find out.

u6newmagincia.png

As usual, here is a map. I arrive in a field of sheep. I now go to find the mayor.

ultimavi0610.png
ultimavi0611.png

ultimavi0612.png
ultimavi0613.png

Basically he tells me that I need to figure out who is the most humble person in New Magincia to get the rune. This seems like such a stupid game to play when the realm is in danger. I decide to play along for now. First I talk to the guy in that field of sheep.

ultimavi0602.png

u6aurendir.jpg
Hi there! Is there anything I can do for you?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6aurendir.jpg
Once I was Aurendir the mighty - now I live a more modest life.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6aurendir.jpg
I came here to meditate and tend sheep.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Sheep.

u6aurendir.jpg
So they can be shorn.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Shorn.

u6aurendir.jpg
To make wool.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Wool.

u6aurendir.jpg
It's used to make thread.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Thread.

u6aurendir.jpg
To be woven into cloth.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Cloth.

u6aurendir.jpg
You can make robes from it.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Robes.

u6aurendir.jpg
I wear a robe while I tend sheep. It's all part of life's great circle.

*cue Elton John*

LionKing.jpg

It's the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life

*end Elton John*

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Circle of Life.

u6aurendir.jpg
From earth, to grass, to sheep, to me... when I die, I'll return to the earth.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Humble.

u6aurendir.jpg
I used to be a powerful and wealthy mage. I wore silk robes, and fine jewelry. In fact, I even had my own castle. But one day in my travels I visited the Shrine of Humility. Meditating there, I had an idea. I would give up all my earthly possessions and quit the practice of magic. I would live as a shepherd! Surely this would be the greatest act of humility a man could perform. And so you see me here today.

Alright, this guy is SO not humble.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Shrine.

u6aurendir.jpg
I should go there again soon... It changed my life.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Mantra.

ultimavi0603.png

Let's get away from this dirty hippie and find someone else. I now enter the tavern and talk to the cook.

ultimavi0622.png

Yep, he is definitely 'competing' in the Humility contest. I now run into my old (and useless) companion Katrina.

ultimavi0609.png

u6katrina.jpg
Hast thou returned to save our land from the gargoyles?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6katrina.jpg
Then surely we are saved already!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6katrina.jpg
I am called Katrina, milord, as I was the last time we met.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6katrina.jpg
Times have changed, milord. Where once I grazed sheep, now I till the land. All work is the same to a peasant, milord. We all do what is expected of us. If thou wouldst have me join thy quest, thou needst but ask.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Humble.

ultimavi0615.png
ultimavi0616.png

Yep, she definitely thinks she is the most humble person in New Magincia. I find a fisherman by the docks.

ultimavi0607.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

Connor: Oh, forgive me for not introducing myself. I am Conor Starfalcon. And what is your name?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Elzair.

Connor: Well met, milord!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

Connor: I am a fisherman. In catching fish, as in all of life, there is something to be learned.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Fish.

Connor: I still have not mastered the way of the fisherman. But I think perhaps the key to enlightenment lies not so much in the destination as in the road one travels.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Humble.

Connor: You seek to find the humblest in New Magincia? That's a difficult task. I'd hate to commend one of my neighbors to you and fail to do justice to the others.

ultimavi0614.png

Hmmm . . . That sounds very humble of him. There are two other inhabitants of New Magincia: the farmer William and the weaver Charlotte, but I think I have found my man.

Wait a minute. Why is that plant by the docks glowing like that?

ultimavi0618.png
ultimavi0619.png
ultimavi0621.png

When I move the plant out of the way and uncover a Magic Shield. Unfortunately the game counts it as stealing if I take it. Oh well!

There are two other people I did not talk to, a farmer named William and a weaver named Charlotte, but they are just as proud of their humility. I take my findings back to the mayor.

ultimavi0623.png
ultimavi0624.png

Yes! I now teleport to the Shrine of Spirituality. Remember this shrine? It is the one that is always only reachable by moongates. Well, the Orb of the Moons goes there just fine. (1S 2W)

ultimavi0625.png
ultimavi0626.png
ultimavi0627.png

I hold onto the Rune of Spirituality and chant 'OM' to lower the forcefield, and then I grab the moonstone and teleport to the Shrine of Justice (1S 2E).

ultimavi0628.png
ultimavi0629.png
ultimavi0630.png

I use the rune, chant 'BEH' and grab the moonstone. I then teleport to the Shrine of Humility (1N 2W).

ultimavi0631.png
m
ultimavi0632.png
ultimavi0633.png

I use the Rune of Humility, chant 'LUM' and grab the moonstone. I only have two virtues left: Sacrifice and Honesty; I decide to do Sacrifice first, so I teleport to Minoc (2S 2E).

ultimavi0634.png

I think this says Mudfish Road. Anyway, I head to the mayor's office.

ultimavi0635.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6isabella.jpg
I am Lady Isabella. Thy name, of course, is well known throughout the land.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Known.

u6isabella.jpg
The tales of thy exploits are known by even the smallest of children. I recognized thee from the portrait Woodroffe made the last time thou came to our land.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Woodroffe.

u6isabella.jpg
One of the finest artisans that ever dwelt in Minoc. Alas, he died of the flu two years ago.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6isabella.jpg
'Tis my privilege to be mayor of Minoc, the city of sacrifice. We are renowned for our fine craftsmen.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Sacrifice.

u6isabella.jpg
We were entrusted with the Rune of Sacrifice.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Rune.

ultimavi0637.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Mantra.

u6isabella.jpg
The good healer Tara should be able to tell you the mantra.

ultimavi0636.png

I head over to the artisan's guild and speak to Selganor.

u6selganor.jpg
Oh, hello. Maybe you can help me with something.

ultimavi0638.png

What?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Volcanic eruption.

u6selganor.jpg
Thanks! Now what can I do for you?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6selganor.jpg
My name is Selganor. 'Tis a name with a long history... But you have the look of one with more important business.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Business.

u6selganor.jpg
Perhaps you're interested in joining the guild.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Guild.

ultimavi0641.png
ultimavi0642.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Rune.

ultimavi0643.png

Shit! It looks like I have to learn to play the panpipes to get the damn rune! It is as if I have nothing better to do. Does this guy even know there is a gargoyle invasion?! I speak to Julia nearby.

ultimavi0644.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Pipes.

ultimavi0645.png

Okay, so I need a freshly cut Yew board. I guess the best place to get one is in Yew. I teleport there and head west a ways until I get to the shack of a woodcutter. He doesn't like it when I barge into his house and start asking him questions, so I wait until he goes outside.

ultimavi0650.png

I buy one Yew log. Now I have to get it cut. I head back to Minoc and go to the woodcutter's place.

ultimavi0652.png
ultimavi0653.png
ultimavi0654.png

He cuts the log into a board.

ultimavi0659.png
ultimavi0660.png

ultimavi0661.png
ultimavi0662.png

I then head back to the guild hall and have Julia make me some pipes. I then find Gwenno, Iolo's wife, roaming around outside.

ultimavi0655.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6gwenno.jpg
It's me, Gwenno. You have been away from our realm a long time, haven't you...

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6gwenno.jpg
Iolo's apprentice has taken over my job at Iolo's Bows. These days I've been transcribing the folk songs of Britannia into numerical notation for the artisan's guild. Of course, helping you on your quest is more important than that right now. Of course, if you need my help, I could leave the guild for a time and join you.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Folksongs.

u6gwenno.jpg
The songs of a people are an important part of their heritage. Putting them down on paper helps preserve our traditions for future generations.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Traditions.

u6gwenno.jpg
I'm so glad you appreciate the value of tradition.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Iolo.

ultimavi0656.png

ultimavi0657.png

Gwenno now heads back to the guildhall, and I follow her to learn Stones (again).

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Stones.

ultimavi0663.png

Sweet! I now play it for Selganor.

ultimavi0664.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi0665.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
6789878767653

ultimavi0667.png
ultimavi0668.png
ultimavi0669.png

Thank gods that is done! I now head to the Shrine of Sacrifice (2S 1E).

ultimavi0670.png
ultimavi0671.png

I hold the Rune of Sacrifice, chant 'CAH', and grab the moonstone when the field is down. Only the Shrine of Honesty remains to be liberated. I head to the Blue Bottle tavern in Moonglow. Unfortunately, the door leading to the secret entrance to the Moonglow catacombs is locked. I will now show you a trick for opening pesky locked doors.

ultimavi0672.png

First, I cast Magic Lock to replace the lock with a magic lock.

ultimavi0673.png

Then I cast Unlock Magic to remove the magic lock. This removes the normal lock as well. It is a handy trick.

ultimavi0674.png

I spot a secret door north of the milk pitcher.

ultimavi0675.png

I move the pitcher out of the way and open the door.

ultimavi0677.png

I break the barrels and head down the ladder.

ultimavi0678.png

Whohoo! I am in my first dungeon! This dungeon is pretty small and does not have many hard enemies.

u6crypts1.png

The first level is almost a square corridor. I just head down one of the ladders (represented by a down arrow).

ultimavi0679.png

u6crypts2.png

The next level is composed mostly of a series of tombs. It is here that I will find the Rune of Honesty.

ultimavi0680.png
ultimavi0681.png

I wonder if the writing staff put their surnames on these tombs? No, game developers would NEVER be that tacky!

ultimavi0682.png

Here we are!

ultimavi0683.png

First, I make sure to leave the flowers. Yes, I have been carrying those things around all this time. Next, I use the key I was given by Beyvin's friend to unlock the door.

ultimavi0684.png
ultimavi0685.png

I search the mausoleum and take the Rune of Honesty. I now have what I came here for, but I want to explore (READ: loot) the rest of the catacombs.

ultimavi0686.png
ultimavi0687.png

I use my lockpicks to open a few of the locked doors. In one of the tombs I find a protection ring.

ultimavi0688.png

I then head down to level 3.

u6crypts3.png

As you can see, there is not much on this level.

ultimavi0689.png
ultimavi0690.png

I unlock the door and head down the ladder.

u6crypts4.png

This level is a bit more interesting.

ultimavi0691.png

I loot the eastern room and get a fire wand (or two, I can't remember).

ultimavi0692.png

The northern room contains some gold and an invisibility ring.

ultimavi0693.png

WTF?! I don't know what is going on in the eastern room, and I am afraid to look.

ultimavi0694.png

I go back there, and there is nothing but a few skeletons.

ultimavi0695.png

I need to do the boogie-dance!

ultimavi0696.png
ultimavi0697.png

Hot damn! Since I am lazy, I teleport to the Shrine of Honesty (2N 1W).

ultimavi0698.png

I hold the Rune of Honesty, chant 'AHM', and grab the moonstone. I have now liberated all of the shrines.

It is now time to head for Buccaneer's Den to pick up the trail of the tablet, but I will leave that for the next update.

Re: Ultima VI Part 3

Man I love the graphics of Ultima VI. I remember the guide so well, too. Good times.

Loved the Sherry furry fanservice.

This LP is awesome, Elzair, and I'd hate to put more bother on your shoulders, but all throughout the LP you seem to occasionally mess up screenshot order, especially late in the update. Example:
Elzair said:

Fiction.

Pretty sure that was supposed to be above "so many books to keep organized"

Also, Zoltan!

This seems like such a stupid game to play when the realm is in danger.

It makes some sense since it's all about spiritual understanding.

Yeah, I know. Each update takes so long that I only do a cursory read through after it is all done. I am still looking for some better LP-making software than TextEdit/Notepad overlaying a Firefox window of the Preview. I will try to get these things sorted out one day.

Ultima VI Part 6

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 6

I now need to travel to Buccaneer's Den to search for clues regarding the location of the missing half of Mariah's tablet. Unfortunately, the Orb of the Moons does not go there. I can either buy a ship and sail there (lame) or I can make my way there through the sewers/tunnels under Lord British's castle (not so lame). It is now time for more dungeon-delving.

I head down the ladder in the southwest corner of LB's castle.

ultimavi0699.png

Rats! It's locked! I remember LB gave me the key at the beginning of the game, but I don't want to fool with that right now.

ultimavi0700.png

Instead I will use the ol' lock-unlock trick.

u6sewers1.png

Here is the map of the first level. There are no enemies on this floor. I head for the ladder down to the second level.

ultimavi0703.png

u6sewers2.png

Here is the map of the second level. There are now monsters on this floor, but they are mostly rats.

ultimavi0704.png

I finally find the ladder down to the third level.

u6sewers3.png

As you can see, this level features a large lake in the center.

ultimavi0705.png

I try to kill this sea serpent, but it keeps fleeing and I lack sufficient ranged weapons to finish the job.

ultimavi0706.png

Here are a pack of headless and a gazer (a beholder rip-off); as you might have guessed, the gazer shoots some magic spells at me; it can even paralyze party members.

ultimavi0707.png

When it is killed, it dissolves into a swarm of insects.

ultimavi0708.png

I have just killed a pack of gremlins. No, the ladder does not lead anywhere useful.

ultimavi0709.png
ultimavi0711.png

Here is a poison trap. I get rid of it with Dispel Field. I now come upon a little house in the middle of the sewers. Whoever is here probably does not want to be found.

ultimavi0712.png

Around back are some treasure chests. They are locked and trapped, but they contain some nice loot.

ultimavi0713.png

Inside the house is a lone woman.

ultimavi0714.png

Her name is Phoenix. She is a member of the thief's guild who uses the sewers underneath Britain as a hideout for her daily larcenous excursions into Britannia's capital city.

ultimavi0716.png

She tells me I need to talk to someone named Budo in Buccaneer's Den about joining the organization.

ultimavi0717.png

I now head to the northwest corner of the lake.

ultimavi0718.png

Nearby is a bridge to a little island with a skiff. I board the skiff.

ultimavi0719.png

I sail to the island in the center of the lake and head down the ladder to the fourth level. I should take the skiff with me, but I do not have enough room.

u6sewers4.png

ultimavi0720.png
ultimavi0721.png

I find a ladder that leads up to Buccaneer's Cave.

ultimavi0723.png
ultimavi0724.png

It is pretty straightforward to find the exit, so I will not bother including a map.

ultimavi0725.png

Finally, I reach Buccaneer's Den.

ultimavi0727.png
ultimavi0728.png
ultimavi0729.png

This is Budo. He does not look like much, but he is the man I need to talk with if I want to join the Thief's Guild.

ultimavi0730.png

I search the wall just south of Budo's door to reveal a secret back-entrance to the tavern.

ultimavi0731.png

This is Leodon, a ship's captain. She will join my party if I ask her. I now speak to the man in the northeast corner of the tavern.

ultimavi0732.png
ultimavi0733.png

This is the man I need to speak to about Captain Hawkin's treasure. Unfortunately, he does not trust me, and the only way to convince him is to join the thief's guild.

ultimavi0734.png

Remember kids, don't stand in front of a cannon when one of your friends is a jackass!

ultimavi0735.png

I wonder what is behind this house?

ultimavi0736.png

There is nothing except some highly explosive powder kegs (that Dupre found out about the hard way).

ultimavi0737.png

avatar Cut the act and tell me about the guild.

ultimavi0738.png

He tells me that to join the thief's guild I need a thief's guild belt. I cannot make one, so the only alternative is to steal one from a current member. Budo suggests I acquire one from that Phoenix chick I met a while ago. First, I warp back to Cove and buy a Pickpocket spell from Rudyom.

ultimavi0741.png
ultimavi0742.png

Next, I steal a sextant from Arty, Britain's shipwright. Then I warp to Minoc.

ultimavi0743.png

I dump all my unwanted, unsellable items on the ground.

ultimavi0744.png

I then buy a skiff from Minoc's shipwright and have Dupre carry it around. I now warp back to LB's castle and descend to the third level of the sewers.

ultimavi0745.png

Since the first skiff is still on that island in the middle of the lake, I use my new one. I then remember that Phoenix lives to the north, so I pick it back up.

ultimavi0746.png

As I expected, she refuses to just give me her belt. I could kill her, but I don't want to, and she is packing some serious heat.

ultimavi0747.png
ultimavi0748.png

Instead, I cast Pickpocket and steal the belt from her.

ultimavi0749.png

I now steal the rest of her equipment. She has three glass swords (those one-hit kill weapons), one suit of magic armor, and one magic helm.

ultimavi0750.png
ultimavi0751.png
ultimavi0752.png

ultimavi0753.png

Here is all of the loot. I equip the magic armor and magic helm. Since I don't want to go through those caves again, I teleport to Minoc.

ultimavi0754.png

I buy a ship for 250 gold. I then board it and sail north.

ultimavi0755.png

Holy shit! The world really is flat! Unlike the past games, I cannot just sail north to get to the south. I have to go all around the world the hard way. It really is annoying.

ultimavi0756.png

I find a shipwreck on an island east of Trinsic (I think this is where it is).

ultimavi0757.png

Here is just a random screenshot of me sailing. I sail back to Buccaneer's Den and speak to Budo.

ultimavi0758.png
ultimavi0759.png

He officially inducts me into the thief's guild and gives me a discount on his supplies. I now equip the belt and talk to Homer. He is more receptive this time.

ultimavi0760.png
ultimavi0761.png
ultimavi0762.png

ultimavi0763.png
ultimavi0764.png
ultimavi0765.png

ultimavi0766.png
ultimavi0767.png
ultimavi0769.png

ultimavi0770.png
ultimavi0771.png
ultimavi0772.png

Okay, here is a summary of this conversation. Captain Hawkins' men mutinied and broke the map to his treasure horde into nine parts. Each of the men was given one piece of the map.

1. Homer, the guy I was talking to, has one.
2. Hawknose was last seen heading off to the Drylands to hunt down a daemon (probably Sin Vraal).
3. Sandy, the ship's cook, was last seen in Trinsic.
4. Ybarra was last seen heading for the dungeon Shame.
5. One died in a shipwreck.
6. One hook-guy settled in Jhelom.
7. There were three others, but I have to find them.

I decide to head to Jhelom and track-down the hook guy first.
ultimavi0773.png
ultimavi0774.png

It turns out to be the old beggar Heftimus.

ultimavi0775.png

I now head for Wrong. It has now been merged with Covetous.

u6wrong1.png

Here is a map of the first level.

ultimavi0776.png

First, I make sure Shamino is holding a lit torch.

ultimavi0777.png
ultimavi0778.png

I head for the rooms in the center of the floor to find the ladder down.

u6wrong2.png

This next level mostly consists of a large corridor with cells on either side.

ultimavi0779.png

HOLY SHIT!! I hug the southern wall as tightly as possible. Even though all the inhabitants are locked-up (I wonder how they got a dragon down here?), the ones with ranged attacks can still damage me.

ultimavi0780.png

The ladder down is at the western end of the hallway. Unfortunately, the gate is barred. I will need to find a way to open it.

ultimavi0781.png
ultimavi0782.png

I see a switch at the eastern end of the hallway. To minimize damage, I leave the rest of my party near the ladder down, enter solo mode, and run to the eastern end of the hallway. I then cast Telekinesis on the lever to flip it.

ultimavi0783.png

I then head back to my party and find the gate is now open. I climb down the ladder to the third level.

u6wrong3.png

Here is a map of this level.

ultimavi0784.png

First, I unlock the top right door and head through.

ultimavi0785.png

Next, I pass through the secret door along the norther wall.

ultimavi0786.png

I finally get to a room with a whole bunch of treasure.

ultimavi0787.png

Searching the glowing pile in the southeast corner nets me both a magic bow and my first map piece. I now loot the other rooms in this level.

ultimavi0788.png

When I open the southeastern door, I am attacked by a group of children. Every Ultima game since IV has included a room where children attack the player. This is the first time I have found it, though. I think it is usually in Wrong.

ultimavi0789.png

Anyway, I run to the ladder that heads down to the fourth level.

u6wrong4.png

This level does not contain any treasure or encounters worth mentioning. Since I have already killed enough monsters to net me 1600+ XP, I warp to the Shrine of Spirituality to level-up since it gives the best bonuses (+1 to Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence).

ultimavi0793.png
ultimavi0794.png
ultimavi0795.png

ultimavi0797.png

Whohoo! Level 6, baby! I can now cast level 6 spells as well. I now level-up a few of my comrades as well.

Alright, I will get a few more pieces of the map next time.

I hate the pirate map. It's one gigantic waste of time. It takes an ungodly large portion of the game and at the end you learn absolutely nothing useful. I tend to skip most of it when I replay the game.

BTW, does anyone know how to get to the bottom of Shame? I can find a ladder down to level 2, but then I hit a dead end.

thats the dungeon where you go straight to level 6, right?

if i remember correctly you have to get into a coffin to open a door or something.

some secret door, thats all i can barely remember.

Impressive equipment.
It's funny how much of this I recognize considering it's been years since I played the game. The pick-pocketing reminds me how I loved nothing more than opening the game by spell-stealing Lord British's equipment, tho' I forget what his two rings are.

Awesome stuff. More!

Uhh, I think Ultima VI only has six levels: overworld, dungeon1, dungeon2, dungeon3, dungeon4, gargoyle land. I think Shame is a gold mine where you can dig in the dirt or pick at stalagmites for gold nuggets.

BTW, can I bake bread in this game, and how do I go about doing it?

I think Ultima VII was the first one where you can bake bread and make swords and such, though I could be mistaken.

I'd forgotten how much I adore Ultima VI. I actually had the same hint book you're showing the maps from, and it's bringing back memories of me as a pre-teen struggling through the game with that hint book at my side :nostalgiafag:

The Ultima series has always been my favorite RPG series of all time, and this reading with LP with all the games back-to-back is just serving to solidify that for me.
:rpgnazi:

Any chance you'll consider doing a bonus Ultima V: Lazarus LP after you've finished all the others? Or maybe I should start one? I guess I should finish my VII LP on the SNES before I start anything else, really.

So you can pickpocket LB with the spell of the same name? I wonder if his Crown Jewels have the same abilities in VI that they had in V.

If I remember correctly, yes, but my memories might be playing tricks on me. But of his equipment
ultimavi0066.png

You can only steal and equip the two rings, and again I forgot what they are. (I assume you can steal the boots too but I never bothered)

If you steal the pendant, it transports back to LB automatically, or you can't equip it (forgot which one)

Man it's been too long. I think I might have actually lost my old Ultima VI box. It came with the game on 3.5" floppies, but that was state of the art, it also came on standard 5.25" floppies. lulz?

PS: Elzair, I forgot: are you planning to kill Lord British in any of these games, if for no other reason. It's difficult but not impossible in most games; I think you can do it with a simple poison trap in VI.

I may do it, but it will be a long way off. I agree that it would be nice to see an update of your U7 SNES LP.

I tried killing LB in the U1 remake. I kept hitting him for probably 5-10 minutes, and he still would not die. Maybe he just has 9999 HP. I did not try killing him in Ultima II&III. I tried killing him in Ultima IV by attacking him in battle, but he still would not die. I even tried using the Skull of Mondain, and that did not kill him. I can't kill him in Ultima V, because he really is not in the game (minus the ending cutscene). I have heard that he will die if you take too long to rescue him, but I did not care enough to test that theory. I guess I will try to find an inventive way of killing him in Ultima VI & so on. What I would like to know is whether or not the Codex wants me to cast Armageddon.

This is the Codex. You have to ask?

Definitely worth showing what happens when you cast Armageddon in VII and then talk to Batlin and LB afterwards. I'd also show the dialog for trying to use the Black Sword to kill Batlin and using it to kill LB.

You already know the Ultima VII "Plaque Trick" as well, I assume?

Ultima VI Part 7

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 7

Before I do anything else, I remember that I am now level six, so I visit Xiao to stock up on new spells.

ultimavi0817.png

Clone creates a duplicate of ANY living creature. Replicate can create a duplicate of any simple object. This means I cannot use it to create multiple copies of a suit of Magic Armor to sell for $Megabucks.

ultimavi0830.png
ultimavi0831.png

See? It does not work. However, there is a way to do this.

I decide to demonstrate this method in Skara Brae. In retrospect it would have been faster to do this in Trinsic so I could more easily offload my goods.

ultimavi0820.png

First I drop the object on the ground.

ultimavi0821.png

I then cast Animate (which brings any inanimate object to life) on it.

ultimavi0822.png

It's Aliiiiiiiive!!

ultimavi0823.png

Now, I cast Clone on it.

ultimavi0824.png

Well, hello!

ultimavi0825.png

Holy shit! It's too bad I have to kill all of these walking suits of armor.

ultimavi0826.png
ultimavi0827.png

ultimavi0828.png
ultimavi0829.png

I then equip every party member with a suit of armor and head to Trinsic to sell the rest. I get at least 1000 gold for every trip.

ultimavi0837.png

I then head back to Horance and buy 40 of every reagent to make sure I don't run out of spells.

ultimavi0838.png

I create some more coats of armor to sell.

ultimavi0839.png

I then create more magic helms for my party. Unlike in Ultima II, these do not have map viewing powers, but they do provide some nice protection.

I then head back to Britain to see if I can bake some bread. Unfortunately, that looks like something that is only in Ultima VII. :(

ultimavi0840.png
ultimavi0841.png
ultimavi0842.png

Oh well, here is a book on baking to tide you over.

ultimavi0843.png
ultimavi0844.png
ultimavi0845.png

I now outfit my party with some magic bows (and plenty of arrows). With one piece of the map in hand I head out for the Drylands to see what ol' Sin'Vraal is up to nowadays and see if I can scrounge up another piece of the map.

His hut is on the southern shores of the Drylands just like last time.

ultimavi0814.png

I talk to him for a while, and I think he mentions that Hawknose fell into an anthole. He also tells me that he is not a daemon but a gargoyle. I then ask a little about his people (since I am supposed to kill them ). He tells me that there are two kinds of gargoyles: winged and wingless. The ones with wings can (usually) fly and are a lot larger than the wingless. Any gargoyle (winged or not) that cannot fly is treated as a slave; this is why he fled. He also mentions a great temple.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Temple.

ultimavi0815.png
ultimavi0816.png

Well, it looks like I will need to find some means of levitation. However, let's first find Graystone (or what's left of him).

ultimavi0846.png

Due south of the Shrine of Sacrifice is a hole in the ground. It looks like this is where all the giant ants are coming from. I walk across the hole to fall down it.

ultimavi0848.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Thanks, Shamino! I would have never guessed that by myself.

u6antmound1.png
u6antmound2.png
u6antmound3.png
u6antmound4.png

As you can see from the map, the ant mound is a veritable four level maze of tiny passages.

ultimavi0849.png

First, I have Shamino light one of his torches.

ultimavi0850.png

I wander around a bit killing giant ants and find a hole leading down.

ultimavi0851.png

I now arrive on in a square of boulders.

ultimavi0852.png

I find a hole to the northeast.

ultimavi0854.png

This is the ant's horde. There are only a few (desirable) items to take with me.

ultimavi0855.png

I now head west to find the hole leading down to the final level.

ultimavi0856.png

I wander around the fourth level until I find the antechamber leading to the Queen's chamber. Unfortunately, I did not get a good screenshot of her. It does not matter because she looks just like any other ant. The cluebook tells me that if I kill her I will lose karma, so I avoid her. I am saving my karma for later.

ultimavi0857.png

I head south (with a shitload of giant ants in hot pursuit) and find the corpse of a knight.

ultimavi0858.png

Yep, this must be Hawknose!

ultimavi0859.png

I get the map (and gold and gems) and use the Orb of the Moons to teleport out of here!

I remember that one piece of the map was said to have been in a shipwreck, so I board my ship and sail around to find it.

ultimavi0861.png

I find the right shipwreck at 71 *S, 15 *E. Unfortunately, it is still guarded by its crew (well, their remains).

ultimavi0862.png
ultimavi0863.png

I kill the skeletons and claim the map. I now sail to Trinsic to find a lead on some other parts of the map.

ultimavi0864.png

Here is a giant squid.

ultimavi0865.png

Here is what happens when you sail off with an NPC on board.

I remember that Sandy the cook is the former crewmate who knows where to find the map. He will tell me if I bring back a dragon's egg from Destard. Oh well, let's get this over with!

I head west.

ultimavi0869.png
ultimavi0870.png

Here is the welcoming party!

ultimavi0871.png
ultimavi0872.png

I unload everything I have at the dragon, and he still takes a chunk out of the party. It looks like a head-on confrontation with these beasts is not very smart at this level.

ultimavi0873.png
ultimavi0874.png
ultimavi0875.png

I then decide to create some invisibility rings for my fellow party members.

ultimavi0876.png

Now we're talking!

ultimavi0877.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Thanks again Shamino!

u6destard1.png

ultimavi0878.png

I evade the dragons and drakes and head southeast to a ladder down to the second level.

u6destard2.png

ultimavi0879.png

I then head due west and find a hole in the ground that drops me down to the third level.

u6destard3.png

ultimavi0880.png

As you can see, I landed in the easternmost chamber.

ultimavi0881.png

I head to the westernmost chamber to find the ladder leading to the fourth level.

u6destard4.png

I need to head north to the centermost chamber to find the eggs. However, since I am not climbing any ladders or anything, I can use only one party member to retrieve the eggs (since I am running low on invisibility rings.

ultimavi0883.png

I make sure Dupre is carrying a light load, and I send him off with a spare invisibility ring. He then heads east to the center chamber and then all the way north to the dragon 'nest.'

ultimavi0884.png

As I expected, one of the rings gave out. I equip the back-up.

ultimavi0885.png

I then grab three dragon eggs since I don't want to come back here.

ultimavi0886.png

Whew! Now that the party is all together, I warp to Trinsic to give Sandy his egg.

ultimavi0887.png

ultimavi0888.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi0889.png
ultimavi0890.png
ultimavi0891.png

ultimavi0892.png
ultimavi0893.png
ultimavi0894.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Fourth.

ultimavi0895.png
ultimavi0896.png

So the mayor of Trinsic is the one with the map?! Well, that is interesting! Let's pay him a visit, shall we?

ultimavi0897.png

Unfortunately, he is sleeping. Let's see if a blue potion will wake him up.

ultimavi0898.png

Shit! It looks like potions only work on members of the party. Fortunately, this will not be the case in Ultima VII.

I sleep until morning and catch Mr. 'Whitsaber' while he is eating breakfast.

ultimavi0900.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6whitsaber.jpg
Then all is lost!

ultimavi0903.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Map.

ultimavi0904.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi0905.png
ultimavi0906.png

Is there any way to tell on him, and if so, should I do it?

ultimavi0907.png

Oh well! I now have four of the nine pieces of the map. I will find more next time!
