The first decade:

Planetfall, the Hive escape pod landed in a riverbed valley in the south-eastern sector of Landmass prime. In the first years the chairman decreed the river be tamed, the bounty of hydroelectric energy fuelling the Hive frontier industry, its water irrigating the first improvised farms and greenhouses. The Leader's Horde settlement has been established amongst the arid hills to the east of the Hive, near a newly discovered nutrient source.

Explorers in the west discover the fertile valley now known as the Vale of Proper Thought, as well as energy and mineral resources.

The second decade:

Discovery and death, explorers responsible for surveying the Vale of Proper thought have died in a savage mindworm attack, not far from Peacekeeping territory. A new colonization expedition is assembled in the Hive, construction on Planet's first recycling tanks begins. A unity foil is recovered, triggering the exploration of the southern sea and the establishment of the Hive navy.

The third decade:

Growth, Fellowship City has been established near Mount Collaboration. Construction on the Command Nexus has begun in The Leader's Horde. The first Rover was being prototyped. Hive Navy collected much resources form sea-bound unity pods. Socialism Crater has been discovered.

The fourth decade:

Labour, construction of the Human Genome Project begun and reached advanced stages, in part due to utilization of alien artifacts superior Hive manufacturing and hard work. Socialism Tunnels established in Socialism Crater. Hive navy discovers Landmass Two and the Monsoon Jungle. Contact has been established with the Peacekeepers. Hive Outriders discover new fertile riverbed valley now known as Agrotech's Blessing. Expedition north heads towards Cape of Pacifism.

The fifth decade:

Progress, peaceful relations with the Peacekepers established resulting in trade of knowledge and material goods. Contact has been established with the Gaians through a comm frequency found while investigating a unity pod. Human Genome Project completed in the Hive to the envy of much of Planet. First major terraforming efforts plant forests, build roads.

The sixth decade:

Prosperity, Fecundity Tower founded at Agrotech's Blessing. Contact made with the Spartans, who have begun colonizing Monsoon Jungle. Beginning of major colonization effort. Command Nexus finished. Construction of the Merchant Exchange begun.

The seventh decade:

Expansion, Seat of Proper thought founded in the Vale of Proper Thought, Great Collective founded on the shores of the Sea of Progress. The Road of Prosperity has been finished connecting the oldest Hive colonies. Outriders finish survey of the Cape of Pacifism. Spartans found Assassin's Redoubt on the edge of Gaian Territory within the Monsoon Jungle.

The eighth decade:

Harmony, Communal Nexus settled on the western shored of Landmass Prime. Manufacturing Warrens established on the edge of the Bay of Labour. The first and only Chialchiuhtlicue Class foil launched. Spartans build Merchant Exchange, Socialism Tunnels shifts focuses on the Virtual World but the University builds it 3 years faster. Educational boom thanks to new Network Nodes. Contact with the Believers established.

The ninth decade:

Wealth, new five year plan bolsters economy. Society Grid founded to the west of the Cape of Pacifism. Hole of Aspiration founded on Communal Cape. Contact established with the Morganites. First supply crawlers eneter service ushering a new era of prosperity. Road network and forests expanded.

The tenth decade:

Revolution, Hive experiences massive growth in both economical and academic fields. Native life form activity increase due to perihelion. Crop failure in Socialism Tunnels begins. Cape of Pacifism colonized. Unrest in Peacekeeper and Spartan territories. Pirate activity subdued thanks to new Tlaloc Class foils of the revived Hive Navy.

Spartan Ambassador spreading untruths about ending non-existing "hostilities" between Spartans and the Hive, while simultaneously threatening to annihilate the Gaians if the Hive does not comply to end these fabricated "hostilities". Hive authorities react by cutting the supply of water and power to the Spartan Embassy. Many call for the re-education of the Spartan ambassador, however the Chairman intervened stating that diplomatic immunity is a basic right of peaceful coexistence, even if it does allow such lies to be spread. He also reminded every citizen that this shows the danger of freedom of speech, as freedom of speech means freedom for spreading severe untruths and thus ensuring the people remain unenlightened and oppressed by imperialism.

CS: We already awaited your call a few hours ago - what can you report?
MZ: We destroyed the last -at least to our current knowledge- enemy rover in our territory. What we found inside the wreckage is pretty concerning in two ways - one: they were equipped with nerve gas pods, which can wreak havoc when used among civilians - we cannot fathom why they didn't use them when they could. [That was only because of a small technical malfunction which won't happen ever again! - Agent Enoch]
CS: Don't say more - they wouldn't dare to employ them while they're using Deidres bases as resupply points - and it would show everyone what we already know about this war: that they're only using our short campaign against her as an excuse to attack us while we're not ready.
MZ: You're undoubtedly correct, Colonel, your wisdom is unsurpassed as usual. But the second thing we learned in the destroyed vessel will sour your mood: the Believers, even though they were always fanatical and opposed to deeper scientific studies have stopped even their pitiful attempts at discovering new technology. They're now only trying to get as much energy as they can from their citizens, mostly from donations they effect via televangelists. The drivers in the rover were completely illiterate, everything in the car was marked with pictograms. And they had implanted headphones with which they listened to sermons day and night. But the implication of this is the worst: they're focusssing on getting new knowledge by stealing it from others - we found traces of a transmission of some of our files [They're on to us! - Agent Enoch]. They must've gotten them in the chaos of their assault on Greenhouse Gate.
CS: Another reason for their war - stealing our wisdom and selling it to the highest bidder. For all their talk about almsgiving, Miriam is living a rather lavish live...and from what I've heard she became fond of mind worms recently - she's bathing with the wriggling [Further lies REDACTED - Agent Enoch].
MZ: She's not preaching what she practises for sure...but who does these days? Yang talks about peace day and night, but sends his ships and soldiers in mock-Gaian uniforms and calls them 'freedom fighters' or 'volunteers'.
CS: "You can buy those uniforms in every cornershop!" - yeah right. An opportunist at every turn. But we could respect that, if it weren't for the slanderous propaganda he spews. He's certainly not beyond hope. [Not if we can prevent that! - agent Enoch]

Miscellaneous news

Less reputable sources might claim that the Spartans tricked the Believers by playing on their bloodlust, sending a bunch of terraformers and scout patrols into Greenhouse Gate to serve as impact fodder. This would have been done to buy them enough time to rush their own Impact Rovers to the front and then completely wipe out the attackers, sacrificing a few civilians and blackshirts with inexpensive electroshock batons to obliterate mineral-costly Believing elite units. All of this is naturally 100% untrue propaganda from the demon realm.

In other news, the Peacekeeping Forces have launched their controversial Citizens' Defense Force, mobilising their entire population by making faction defence a civic duty. Believing High Command estimates the defensive strength of Peacekeeping bases to be roughly on par with that of Yang's underground bunkers.

Finally, two thousand members of the neo-puritan sub-denomination have established a charter colony on Providence Island, located just north-west of Landmass Prime. This is the first Believing base established outside of New Eden, and according to the Promised Land Committe, it is also far from the last one. In light of the mounting danger of heresy at home, as well as the ever-present risk of falling into occult worship or succumb to other cosmic horrors when operating so far away from Mount Zion, only brothers and sisters with exemplary moral and spiritual track records are considered for overseas service.

Achan thought he was clever, but for all his lies and trickery he could not hide from the Everseeing Eye of Providence! Just as the Lord God communicated his identity to his faithful servant Joshua, so our glorious Father in Heaven communicated to Sister Miriam Godwinson the identities of our own covenant-breakers! Following the zealous cleansing of the flock, our own "stoning of Achan" which saw the Lord placated through the arrest and sentencing of hundreds of wretched insurgents, divine favour has returned to our Spiritual Israel just as it returned to fleshly Israel in Joshua's day.

Reports of fighting all along the Gaian highway raged. Gaian forces had been pushed back in a chaotic retreat suffering greatly. However the freshly formed Gaian rover corps had proven their worth, annihilating a logistically overstretched and exhausted Spartan formation with virtually no casualties themselves. Many Gaians had begun to refer to the long and fiercly contested stretch of road as the 'Highway of Death'. Speed, surprise and ferocity seemed to be the crucial ingredients to this fast-paced and offensively-oriented warfare.

Deidre reminded herself that most of the Gaian formations lost had been the worst trained and most poorly equipped units of the Gaian army. Some had even gone into battle without any armour at all, a virtual deathwish against the battle-hardened Spartan rover formations. Deidre couldn't help but be relieved however that the brave men and women presently fortifying Gaia's Landing were a cut above the poorly coordinated force that had failed to re-take the Jungle: even lowly militia boasted the once exotic and hideously expensive plasma armour while Gaian leadership had learned many lessons from their earlier defeats (and Deidre noted with a smile, handful of victories), no longer.

Overall 2203 had been a bloody year for the Gaia: the painful losses of the start of the year had been somewhat rectified by the successful deployment of a Gaian armoured force. The Spartans were a tough lot certainly but Deidre had no doubt that they would inevitably crumble in the face of an oppressed people's resistance and the combined might of the Gaian-Hive-Believers 'Triumvirate of Peace'.

While life in the New Gaian Highwaymen camp is seemingly idyllic, with the war seemingly nowhere to be seen, the signs are everywhere. Rover wrecks dragged from the Highway of Death are used to build fortifications. Drills are a part of the daily routine just like breakfast and sleep. Combat alerts wake everybody up and build anxiety, as the Spartan forces are supposedly mere kilometres away, just beyond the horizon. Lurking, preparing to spread their oppression and aggression to the normally care-free New Gaian folk.

After three days of fighting the Highway of Death proves it is worthy of the name. With three Partisan battalions destroyed, one remains. The survivors are severely outnumbered by the wounded, and the wounded by the dead. Their sacrifice however was not in vain. The Spartan rovers that attacked the partisans have been crushed in a swift counter attack supported by the New Gaian fleet, which shelled the Spartan positions. While three battalions were lost, the New Gaians have annihilated 5 fascist rover battalions since the Highwaymen were formed. They now set their eyes on the future, as freedom is just within their grasp.

tl;dr

Spartans kill 3 Sentinel of Peace squads from my 4 unit stack as they reinforced the single enemy rover with two more. I counter attack with my rovers and mop them up. This highway is built of corpses.

15 January, 2209 A.D.

Knight-Major Joshua Barnett, director of the Special Research Unit at Zion-Tek, officially known as the Prometheus Virus Prevention and Water Purification Division, had never felt as exhilarated in his entire life. Sister Miriam Godwinson, the Prophetess of the Lord and the undisputed leader of the congregation, had suddenly opted to grace him and his staff with the immense honour of her presence. Public appearances from the Elders of Zion were already rare enough, and in the last forty years, Miriam had communicated almost exclusively through sermons on the Datalinks. In stark contrast to the members of the tight-knit community that originally settled New Eden, most Believers in the 23rd century had never actually met their leaders in person, nor seen them anywhere but on the screens of Believe-Net Terminals. In the course of an hour, all that had changed for Barnett and his people. Along with a retinue of aides, elders, generals and white-robed templars, Sister Miriam had walked through the heavy vault doors into the underground facility, asking for a guided tour through every level and inquiring with great interest about their many covert projects.

While Miriam could at best be described as a short and plain-looking woman, the Zion-Tek staff was thoroughly captivated by her presence. She took her time to greet and converse with every brother and sister, regardless of rank or stature, and seemed genuinely interested in what they had to say. When she condemned heretics and heathens in her sermons she could be hard, even vicious, but to the brethren, she was as warm and loving as a mother to her children. In combination with her powerful personality and reputation as the elect mouth-piece of the Lord God, the frail, ancient little woman commanded respect and devotion surpassed only by the Almighty himself.

Doctor Jessica Albright from the Biomedical Sciences Department had just finished her report on the development of knock-out gasses, truth drugs and the progress of the new Purifine project, an experimental drug derived from a blasphemous Morganite “pleasure” chem, heavily re-designed for the more wholesome purpose of suppressing the sinful sexual instinct. Her plan to promote abstinence by distributing the drug through the water supply had been met with several nods of approval from the visitors. Doctor Jobadiah Stevens from the Advanced Weapons Department had then moved on to introduce the new riot control gear, ironically based on non-lethal designs purchased from the Peacekeepers, and he was currently in the middle of demonstrating the new electroshock laser rifle on a number of test subjects from Cragscleft.

“… and so, the low-power laser beam ionizes the air, while the electrical charge itself follows the laser to the target. The three firing modes can be cycled through with voice-activated commands or simple adjustments with the trigger finger, all depending on the situation. Neural linking could remove the need for this entirely, of course, but so far we know precious little of its effects or applications. The Spartans are investing quite heavily in neural grafting, however, so God willing, we will likely improve the design based on liberated and purified data. Finally, as you can clearly see, the rifle is entirely recoilless!”

While finishing the sentence, the energetic researcher aimed the rifle at one of the subjects – supposedly a heretic from the purges in 2207 A.D – and with a quick squeeze of the trigger, the man suddenly screamed out, jerked around wildly and crashed to the floor in a series of painful spasms.

"That was the stun mode! Pacified and easy to apprehend, all in accordance with Pravin Lal's precious charter. Now, would you like a demonstration of the kill mode, or perhaps the crispy mode? Those we added ourselves!"

"Oh, that will be quite alright, brother", Miriam replied with a smile, "no need to waste the subjects on my account. Any drawbacks with the equipment?"

"Only the weather, sister! The rifles are sub-optimal in humid climate zones, and would be ill-suited for policing operations in the Monsoon Jungle, at least outside of the sealed environments. As for New Eden, our police forces could start fielding the rifles at once. A couple of thousands of these, and I doubt we would see any drone riots or apostate activity anytime soon.”

“Would you deem that necessary?”, Miriam inquired, turning to one of the elders by her side.

“Ah, well… Not at this stage, perhaps”, replied Elder Frick, head of the Purity Patrol. “Unlike the Spartans and the Hive, who rely entirely on their police to enforce their ideology, the members of our congregation typically report all infractions to their local elders, even those committed by family members. The Everseeing Eye also helps to root out crime and heresy wherever they can. As for those who cannot be controlled by these subtle means, we have already nerve-stapled the vast majority. Although, that said…”

“Yes, brother?”

Frick cleared his throat, continuing, “Well, the nerve-stapling treatments may not last indefinitely, and some of the spiritually weak brethren may turn restless if the beneficial effects wear off. If the sunspot activity passes, it would be a good idea to have an alternative to suppress them, assuming the other factions cannot be convinced to repeal the U.N. Charter. Non-lethal weapons would go a long way to maintain the concord in the congregation.”

"Very well then. See to it, if you please. Now, brother Barnett, what is the status of Project Judgement?"

Barnett tensed, readying himself for the report he suspected was the true reason behind the surprise visit. Commissioned nearly thirty years earlier, Project Judgement (originally Project Purity, renamed due to association with a certain extra-heretical piece of demonic software) was the covert nerve agent program of the Lord's Believers. The weapons they had designed had been fundamental in the invasion of Morganite territory, and were now also considered of utmost importance to the Spartan campaign.

"The Lord God continues to bless us sister", Barnett began, "and the Novichok-47, based on the samples procured from the University, is without a doubt our most potent agent yet. Symptoms remain the same, of course - contracted pupils, salivation, spasms and defecation shortly after contact, eventually followed by death as the subjects suffer complete respiratory depression - but the penetration has been improved manifold, particularly as a result of our testing on the wicked Morganites. It is also much more difficult to detect with conventional Unity equipment."

"Will it be able to take out the Spartan plasma-steel troops?", one of Miriam's generals interjected.

"Most probably, yes, brother. Novichok-47 is absorbed through the skin, so mere helmets or breathing masks will not suffice as protection. The merest chink or crack in a suit of battle armour will expose its wearer to the agent, and it is further designed to defeat standard environmental suits and chemical protective gear. Even if some Spartans survive the encounter, either by employing antidotes or withdrawing from the contaminated area, they are bound to suffer chronic neurological damage. Furthermore, the Spartan response to nerve attacks is sure to be based on the inferior Khora-1255 agent lost during the siege of Greenhouse Gate. Assuming that this is true, they are in for a rude awakening indeed."

"And what of the means of delivery, as well as our stockpiles?"

"Excellent progress on both accounts! We have successfully adapted the agent to impact cannon shells, chemical grenades and concealed canisters. In addition, we are currently exploring additional options, including delivery by guided missiles. As for our stockpiles, we have manufactured enough to cleanse the entire jungle many times over. The only thing we need, really, is fresh troops to deliver it, but we cannot really grow those in our labs."

"I would hope not!", Miriam remarked, drawing chuckles from around the room. "Well, it seems we are in good hands. You have all done exceedingly well brother Barnett, and the Lord God surely recognises your magnificent service to vindicate his name."

"Thank you sister!", Barnett exclaimed, beaming with pride and joy. It was a pity that his vow of secrecy would keep him from sharing the moment with his wife and children, but he was determined to treasure it in his heart until the great day of the Lord. After the return of Christ, there would be plenty of time to reminiscence about it with his loved ones.

All of eternity, to be precise.

Chief Aerospace Protector and declared person of African Origin General Cloaked Figure, who was oppressed for his skin colour by the racists and imperialists of Old Earth, announced the formation of the Hive Aerospace Protectors during the Chairman's morning press conference today. The very first working experimental aircraft on Planet has been built in Socialism Tunnels two years ago, the rapid pace at which Hive Engineers and Laborers work allowed the first few squadrons to secretly enter service just a year later. All Njiwa Wa Amani squadrons, which is Swahili for Dove of Peace, are equipped with Yunshi guided missile launchers as well as fungicidal dusting tanks for peaceful civilian duty above the great farm fields of the Hive. The Doves of Peace shall, to quote Cloaked Figure, "keep the racists and imperialists of Planet from enslaving the African peoples, protecting us in particular from the Spartan Federation".

Their first combat engagements has taken place today, as they came to the aid of an anti-piracy patrol that has been badly damaged by a new Spartan missile foil. While the Tlaloc Class Impact Foil has sunk, nearly all crew has been rescued by nearby Hive merchantmen. The Spartan foil has been utterly destroyed, exploding in a massive fireball as its stockpile of missiles exploded.

Chairman Yang announces that the Hive is regretfully in a state of Total War with the Spartan menace, which continues sponsoring piracy and attacking Hive civilian and defensive vessels. "The Fascist Spartan State is built on untruths, aggression and oppression", the Chairman said, "their continuing aggression towards the weaker peoples, such as the peace-loving Gaians, proves that their thug state needs to be cut down to size."

Mindworm activity threatens industries, but Hive Guard defends valuable industrial assets from the savage worm attacks. More volunteers sign up for worm-hunting duty to protect citizens and labourers alike.

A new industrial revolution begins as the previous ten year plan bears fruit. Hive industrial, farming and energy output at an all time high. New ten year plan promises even more prosperity and peace for all citizens*.

Good run JoKa, you expanded nicely, kept the lead and fought off the kongo bongo enrichment like a pro! Hope you'll consider playing in the next game if you get some free time later on. It was a real pleasure!

As for this year, Spartan Rovers destroyed the Believing Elite Crusaders near the border, and were in turn destroyed by not-quite-as-elite Impact Rovers. The Holy Fleet also sunk a Spartan foil, but will probably end up losing the foil that scored the kill next year. All in all, casualties continue to be more or less equal.

That said, one thing stood out:
