IT MIGHT BE THE CHEESY RIPOFFG UNLISCENSED CHARACTERS

MAYBE TRASH BUT ITS MY TRASH

They also did The Fallen Angels.

The character designer on that game would later end up working on KoF ‘99, and versions of characters from Fallen Angels would find there way over to that game as K’ and Maxima. Actually I think two artists from Fallen Angel ended up going over to SNK for KoF ‘99.

There’s a rumor that Capcom is working on a new Marvel vs Capcom game, (to be titled: Marvel vs Capcom 4) and that it’s going to come out next year.

Seems pretty fishy, which is why I’m just dumping this here instead of making a thread, but it’s a rumor. The thing that makes it seem most doubtful is there wasn’t a Marvel vs Capcom game listed anywhere in the Capcom leak list schedule from 2020. But, there are two things that make me not just dismiss it as 100% bullshit. The first is that leak schedule did have two titles set for 2024 that didn’t have names, they were just listed as “New C” and “New B,” so Capcom did have a couple unknown things planned for 2024. The other is the old rumors of Capcom doing a new MvC that was going to be called MvC4 that seemingly went nowhere did come with a whole host of other rumors that were true.

The rumor did however come with a roster, and I don’t really buy the roster being what Capcom would actually go with for a new Marvel vs Capcom game.

So I've been following some of the closed beta stuff with that MultiVersus game. I have a prediction, and it's that that game is going to be fucking huge.

Hopefully its mega success as a free-to-play game finally gets the Japanese developers off their fucking asses on this. Harada seems to have an irrational worry that F2P can't work for fighting games despite the biggest and most profitable fighting games as a genre ever were was in the arcades days when, while not free, they were just a quarter to play.

I do think we'll see some more Japanese platform fighters seen. That leaked Rockman Duel game really sounds like a fighting game, and if Capcom is building a new fighting game around Mega Man, I'd imagine it's some type of platform fighter. I would've thought Bandai Namco would've taken their Smash Bros. team and put them to work on some Jump branded Smash Bros. game; but if those rumors that Bandai Namco is making the new Killer Instinct for Microsoft are true, and given Smash Bros. sales in comparison to all other fighting games, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft went to them to make a Killer Instinct platform fighter. It's like, if you're going to them to make your fighting game than it's probably either a platform fighter or it's some type of 3D fighter. If they wanted to keep things normal 2D, they probably could've had someone like Eighting, Dimps, Arika, CyberConnect2, French Bread, Subtle Style, Studio Saizensen, or Arc System Works...that's if it's even true that Bandai Namco is even making Killer Instinct.
Hopefully it fails miserably. All games of that type are for retarded children, but especially some design-by-committee derivative turd by some shitcorp like WB.

It's going to be fucking huge. Word of mouth from the closed beta was great, (much better than I was expecting, and even the people playing it seem surprised) and it's going to be a free game with cross-play. Look at the numbers on that Brawlhalla game Ubisoft has, MultiVersus is going to be vastly bigger.

The game was huge for about half a year. Then they stopped updating it and everyone left.

Oh, you don't say that paid shills who get paid to shill shilled for an obviously terrible game, then they got theirs and the whole thing fizzed out? Surely this has never happened before. Say it isn't so!

I wonder who fell for it

So, what are some good, retro fighting games worth playing, outside of major franchises? The weirder the better.

It’s weird to think of any of these as retro.

Guardian Heroes is probably one of the most unique fighting games around. It so solved the single player fighting game problem that some people don’t think of it as a fighting game...but it’s a fighting game using the Lane System from the Fatal Fury series.

Red Earth (War-Zard) had a leveling up system to go along with its RPG trappings. Red Earth, Monster Maulers, Metamoqester are all fighting games made more in the of Fatal Fury (and the original Street Fighter) in that they’re in the boss rush style fighting games were in before Street Fighter 2 came along. Although all of these are years after Street Fighter 2.

Fighters Megamix is cool and let’s you play as the Hornet the car from Dayton USA. Last Bronx is good too, and has a cool style to it.

Groove on Fight is a weird future set Power Instinct game.

I’ve never played it, but Martial Masters looks really good. Buriki One is another one I haven’t played, but it looks really interesting and I’ve heard good things about it. I don’t think it runs great on emulation though.

Sumsoft did some cool stuff that came out on the Sega Saturn: Astra Superstars, Waku Waku 7, and Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors.

Aggressors of Dark Kombat is a fighting game with belt scroll movement like a beat ‘em up or old 2D wrestling game. SNK’s 3 Count Bout wrestling game has some outside the ring, almost Pit Fighter stages where you can use weapons.

There’s a cool little Sega fighting game called Holosseum, but you aren’t going to get the full effect of it outside of the arcade.

Anything on https://wiki.gbl.gg/w/Main_Page

My favorite mechanically weird or unique retro fighting games are Cyberbots, Samurai Shodown 3 and Golden Axe the Duel. Yeah the former two are Capcom and SNK but they're refined tastes. From the Mizuumi wiki on SamSho3:

Samurai Shodown III (often referred to as SamSho 3 or Zansam by people that are in way too deep) is often considered to be the “black sheep” of the franchise. While SamSho as a whole is certainly no stranger to weird or poorly thought out mechanical design that affects the gameplay in many curious ways, SamSho3 is notorious for its particular brand of mechanical mismanagement that would cause some to decry the game as “kusoge”. And yeah, it kind of is, but we think it’s endearing and a lot of fun.

Art of Fighting 3 is very unique too.

Matrimelee has dope art from Range Muruta, but I've not spent much time with it.

Armored Warriors is the beat ‘em up, the follow-up Cyberbots is the fighting game. If you play it, you might want the Saturn version, it’s got more playable characters.

Capcom has another slight lesser known Mech fighting game too called Tech Romancer. Didn’t know about that game until the Capcom Design Work book came out.

As Assisted Living Godzilla has said, SEGA made gold with AM2's work: Last Bronx by AM3 running on the VF2 engine is a fantastic game, and while I don't find Fighting Vipers to be as appealing and enduring as either VF2 or LB it's very fun as well and has interesting peculiarities such as the speed and the meta of smashing the enemy against the wall, and the aforementioned Fighters Megamix might be the best reason to emulate Saturn, a real jewel for VF fans. I would also name Eternal Champions as a representative of SEGA catalogue in 2D, I think it doesn't get enough love and while its animation quality and overall fluidity is limited on account of it being designed for MegaDrive instead of an arcade machine, the vibe with its bright, detailed visuals and excellent soundtrack is unparalleled, while its sequel for SEGA CD Challenge from the Dark Side changed the tone quite a bit to an edgier quasi-MK style while improving the system and adding new characters; going by its lack of popularity I guess it might not be as good as the later iterations of SF2 and the likes of FF3 but it sure is worth checking out, its unique style sets it apart.

While The Last Blade 1&2 do get their deserved recognition here in the Codex as some of the very best 2D fighters ever (in fact, my favourite), among SNK's treasure Savage Reign and its sequel Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle are still mistakenly glossed over: they share the core fighting engine of the Real Bout series but with superb character and stage design, huge, colourful and detailed sprites, and the ability, in Savage Reign, of moving not just to the background but to a different level of the arena from which is sometimes possible to throw objects at the enemy, while Kizuna Encounter ditches the layer switching in favour of a very fast paced tag system where the possibility of changing character is locked to a certain area, adding an element of tactics in restraining the movement of the enemy.

BTW, last time I wrote in this thread it was in reply to someone who asked what was the favourite fighting game of each retard here, and I said at the time it was Dead or Alive 5 Last Round but had the impression that if I had the chance to play Virtua Fighter 5 regularly that would be it instead. It happened, I bought a PS4 Pro just to blast VF5 Ultimate Shodown and now my computer has become little more than a SEGA arcade emulation machine, devotedly playing VF2 and 4 PPPKing with Lau Chan every day. Video games just don't get any better than this.

Thanks, I knew but it runs like crap on my laptop, to the point of not being actually playable. PS3 emulation of Final Showdown via RPCS3 does work like a charm though, but I thought the limited PS3 didn't do justice to the gorgeous visuals of the arcade machine (though it could be argued whether some of the character redesigns in Ultimate Showdown in PS4 are an incomprehensible disservice to the original) and I wanted to be where the online players were, also showing some support to the upcoming VF6 which I happen to expect to be revealed this week during EVO Japan. If there's a current game I would pay full price for, this is it, worth every potato.

There was a leaker years ago that mentioned after the failure of Infinite Capcom was going back to 4 for the next Marvel vs Capcom game they were trying to put together. It’s be easy to dismiss that since nothing came of it, but I’m pretty sure it was the same leaker that ended up leaking like every Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character, and leaked some Injustice 2 characters. I think he was also the same person behind that big 2017 leak of Soul Calibur VI, DMC5, the RE2 Remake, and some DLC stuff about SF5 and DBFZ.

Trying to find the old MvC4 rumors, I also just saw that FChamp had said in July of 2020 that Capcom were working on MvC4 and SF6...and that’s before the big Capcom leak that said Street Fighter 6 was coming soon. He’s the one that showed off the Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Devkit version of the game and said originally they’d planned to have 61 characters.

It's a shame that Sega lost a golden opportunity with Ultimate Showdown, it's still by far the best 3D fighting game even 12 years after the release of Final Showdown and it's not even close. They really fucked up with that fucking netcode. There's some speculation that something VF related might be announced during Evo Japan (March 31), but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I think Fighters Megamix was a cool curio, but it's a consensus among most people who play or have played VF somewhat competitively (or at least with a competitive mindset) that, as a VF game, it's garbage.

Something you might not already know is that Fighting Vipers' director, Hiroshi Kataoka, went on to produce VF after 4, when Suzuki went crazy. I think he took over VF entirely after VF4 Evo. I like Fighting Vipers, especially 2. It was a cool game that unfortunately never had any kind of appeal outside Japan.

VF deserves so much better than Sega's gross fucking negligence. The series current producer, Seiji Aoki, is friends with Tekken's Harada, and I wouldn't doubt some sort of collaboration could happen after Tekken 8 gets released. I hate Tekken, but at this point, anything would be better than whatever it is Sega is (not) doing.

This is a scientifically accurate statement.
They really fucked up with that fucking netcode.
Every interview I've seen with Aoki has been about how surprised SEGA was with the success of Ultimate Showdown's release. I bet the budget assigned to the project was meagre and by no means would have been sufficient to develop proper netcode; Aoki has expressed they are aware of this issue when it comes to the future of the franchise, so there's some reason for optimism in his elusive answers...
As per usual, SEGA suits have no fucking clue about what they have in their hands: it's not just VF5US, but the release of Sonic Forces after Sonic Mania not ever greenlighting its sequel or them re-releasing the same MegaDrive games (not even including CD or 32X) over and over console generation after generation while their vast catalogue of arcade treasures remains nowhere to be seen since the days of AGES 2500 for PS2. Even the only reason why Shenmue I & II got that cheap port to modern consoles a couple years ago was because Suzuki managed to get III developed, so somebody outside the company had to remind them there was money on the table.
That the last release of VF in PC was 2.1 back in 1997 and the only VF that can be purchased in Steam is the MegaDrive conversion is just insane, but so it is that they aren't selling Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Addler, Dynamite Cop, SpikeOut, Daytona USA... not even Outrun 2006 which to this day remains perhaps the best arcade racer ever. Games that either had XBOX ports that could serve as an excellent base for conversion or even had had a Windows release back in the day to begin with.
Hopefully the success of Streets of Rage 4, the cheap HotD remaster, VF5US, even the homages within the Yakuza games and what other companies like SNK are doing with their catalogue is enough to remind someone with authority in the company that they are sitting on a gold mine.
I think Fighters Megamix was a cool curio, but it's a consensus among most people who play or have played VF somewhat competitively (or at least with a competitive mindset) that, as a VF game, it's garbage.
Of course, that's to be expected with a game where the Akira from VF Kids can fight a car with the game system of FV, but as an oddity it's well worth checking out by anybody remotely interested in the series, the singleplayer content is fun and with the secret characters to unlock and the thematic fighting courses it goes beyond what any other SEGA fighter offered in the Saturn for solo play.
Something you might not already know is that Fighting Vipers' director, Hiroshi Kataoka, went on to produce VF after 4, when Suzuki went crazy. I think he took over VF entirely after VF4 Evo.
I knew Suzuki was not involved with the development of 5 but was not aware of him leaving before Final Tuned. Was his departure what allowed such a decline in art direction that ended up giving us Goh the zombie with piercings and Jean the fag Dante cosplayer, and taking away the laughter from a victorious Lau Chan, the fair eyes from Aoi, the green from Vanessa and removed any semblance Pai had left to her original self in 1? Really, as good as 5 is the character design took severe hits and each iteration of the game the characters look less appealing, and I would like to know who to blame.
I agree with the concern; I understand SEGA wants to appeal to Tekken fans numbering in the millions as the closest, largest target demographic for VF, but there's huge danger in that. The takes I've seen from Tekken users approaching VF for the first time with 5US are extremely retarded and will definitely kill the series if listened to. DoA5's inclusion of Akira, Sarah, Pai and Jack as guest characters was very well done and their fighting styles matched up well with the DoA system, but sadly now it's DoA's turn to be dead and I'm not too fond of the influence the flashy Tekken might have on the series. What the current AM2 should keep in mind is that Tekken got as big as it did precisely because VF left the arena due to whatever dumbfuckery happened in SEGA, and not the other way around. Looking forward to the EVO reveal, I said earlier I'm genuinely expecting it to be VF6 going by the cryptic comments of Aoki, but even if it's "just" proper netcode for 5US or the return of the Quest mode I'll be delighted. Glad to have some virtuaposting in the thread.
