Dungeon Master is my childhood favourite. You can find a remake in java quite easy.

Yes, excellent game. That game and the sequel on the Atari St provide many hours of fun.

If Fallout is old school than so is Baldur's Gate. Some people here would tell you it sucked, but you can safely ignore them.

Play Baldur's Gate, or at the very least give it a try. Then if you've finished it and want more play Baldur's Gate 2 and the expansions.

Both of these + their expansions will keep you occupied for a long time. Unless you're a loser and have nothing better to do with your life than to play computer games for 60 hours a week. Then they will only keep you occupied for a medium amount of time.

As someone said here before, Arcanum is also good (I only enjoyed it the first time around, but I *really* enjoyed it).

I personally didn't like Planescape that much, but a lot of people did so that is also a very solid choice - especially if you are insecure about your intelligence. Playing Planescape: Torment will enable you to consider yourself an intellectual and a connoisseur of computer games.

Baldur's Gate is really only fun if you like dungeon crawlers. That's basically all it is.

Yeah, no way someone who wrote they liked Daggerfall would enjoy Baldur's Gate.

Then maybe it's not the game for you.

Get over it and move on.
We weren't talking whether it is or isn't for me, junior. Games with EPIC written all over it with EPIC LEWT everywhere and EPIC UBER enemies stopped being cool a while ago.

So it should still be cool for Vipera, since he asked for old-school games (old school for me means something like Pool of Radiance, but it's obvious it means the 90's for Vipera).

The post says he liked Daggerfall (are you claiming that's not similar to BG?) so you can feast on up to and including three (3) genitalia of your choice.

Yeah, I'm claiming that it plays very differently than BG. Now pick your balls and get out because your bitching is just like hearing Aerie's bitching again. Makes my ears and brain bleed.

Fact 1 : Black really hates BG.
Fact 2 : Every mention of BG will summon Black, who will then proceed to share his hatred.
Fact 3 : Fact 1 and 2 are unavoidable.

It can get on your nerves. So try to ignore him when you talk about BG.

Fine, then we are at a difference of opinion, because I think liking one of them suggests a strong indication of liking the other.

Since these are subjective opinions I don't think there is any reason to continue arguing this point.

Vipera asked for a recommendation, you gave him yours and I gave him mine. He can do what he wants with them.

EDIT:

Fact 37: Codex agreed.

And since many of bg2 fails also apply to bg1...

Hey ido, how pathetic can you be? Now you're bringing it down to OPINIONS but let's take a look what you previously said.

What a great dumbfuck would you make...

The Codex has long straddled the fine line between being highly selective connoisseurs and pointlessly contrarian dicks. I propose the following: a lack of appreciation for the excellent-yet-flawed BG series would make a good litmus test for contrarian dickery.

In other words: those games was just plain fun, you bitter, bitter cockmonglers.

BG would have been SO awesome if it even had remotely resembled the first town of IWDII. Targos is full of things dependent on skills, classes and choices. Combat was well paced there with the goblin battle at the end being a good closer to the whole Targos bit. Too bad they put in way too much combat against weak critters after that.

So if you are going to play any IE game, play IWDII first until you finish the goblin battle. Play Targos through a few times with different groups and talkers and you'll see the kind of things that could have been done with BG.

PS:T is fine in Vista apart from a lack of EAX. Fallout 1 and 2 work fine too (although Fallout 1 has repainting issues on some configurations).

I think BG should possibly be cut a bit of slack, retrospectively. It doesn't match up to the interactivity of Ultima 7 part 2, but it was a new engine and hadn't been exploited to the point it was in IWDII - which could take advantage of an engine enhanced over BG2.

Then again, PS:T was released only a year after BG, using a modified version of the same engine and is so much better that it's scary.

I don't think BG is a classic, BG2 achieves success through it's sheer scale, but PS:T wins from utter quality.

Baldurs Gate is acceptable. There is better, there is worse.

It straddles a fine line; The battle system is average. The quest structures are average. and the overall goal is average. Really, the game is very average.

However, with that being said, it is positively better than most of the new, so-called RPG's out there.

I would say it is worth picking up for a playthrough, unless you are incredibly picky. If so, avoid.

To be fair, the graphics were pretty damn good for an isometric 3D game and the magic system was vastly better than Ultima. Music wasn't too bad in parts and the opening cut scene was damned good.

The rest was very average though, and the endgame is positively annoying. Then again, they didn't fix annoying endgames with BG2 ToB or IWD either (not finished IWD2 yet). It all has a generally slow increase in difficulty level (except in IWD where if you pick the wrong party you'll find it tough straight away), a couple of slightly tougher battles and then a rock hard ending. I'll grant that if you've been playing tactically for the rest of the game, you won't have a problem, but it's entirely possible to mostly breeze through the rest and then get repeatedly wiped out - not much fun.

OK, so it wasn't actually 3D. Then again, Doom wasn't 3D either. Does the average person in the street care? If it's a half decent game and the viewpoint doesn't get in the way it's all good.
