Play any of the IE games if you haven't already. They're all pretty grand.

You could also try something like Arx Fatalis or Wizardry 8 if c.2000 quality 3D doesn't bother you.

I have another set of recommendations if you're looking for something even older tho.

If you like the space opera setting of the already-mentioned Elite games, I strongly recommend rocking out both the Starflight and Star Control series. Both are multi-genre but with a focus on adventure and role-playing and both have great production values in terms of detail, art, music, etc.

If you want a straight-up RPG, Planet's Edge is pretty good and was made by the same folks who worked on the older Might & Magic's.

I never considered Starflight or its blatant (and wonderfully updated, highly improved copy) Star Control II (the latter freeware - sc2.scoureforge.net) as RPGs, myself. But some do.

And there's no set of three games I've loved as much as those. Not Fallout, not Torment, not Ultima II, V, VII, or VIII (j/k).

Realms of Arkania might be a hair too DOS menu driven for you. Nice set of games, but VERY old school. Darklands is a little ponderous but different from anything else I've seen and kind of cool.

I agree on Betrayal at Krondor.

But I'm surprised no one's mentioned Pool of Radiance (SSI / Gold Box game).

I'd say if you haven't played Torment yet go for that first. It's one of those games everybody should play at least once

Okay guys, I want to do PS: Torment but I'm not sure how it will do on Vista. I would torrent it and then mount the ISO using Daemon Tools; anyone foresee a problem?

The only significant problem I'm aware of is that without taking the appropriate steps, the game may freeze when you cast spells and whatnot. One way to deal with it is to turn off hardware acceleration, though I've only played like that on XP so I can't vouch for it. I remember someone posted a link elsewhere on here to a fix for the problem, but I don't remember where.

I had to jump through quite a few hoops to get it running well on XP... so probably.

This should help you out if you get slowdown problems.

Also use Infinity Cracker to get rid of the CD check.

And look up resolution patches-- but be sure to find a good UI mod to go along with it

I read that KOTOR is now oldschool and KOTOR is a child of makers of Mass Effect, Jade Empire and Baldur's Gate. Can't go wrong with that one.

Two reasons:

A) No one had directly quoted my original post as of the point in time at which it was edited.

and

B) In retrospect, also asking for recommendations of non-RPGs is incongruous with the subject of this sub-forum.

My comrades, it has been a great success. So great that I can play Torment directly from its program file without bothering with CDs or mounting the ISO, and that it restored some stuff Black Isle apparently removed before release.
