2018 was awesome, a "track of the decade" appeared (Autechre - tt1pd). As for RPGs, Pillars 2 and Kingmaker.

Initial load times of the game after the big patch were cut in half, maybe to one-quarter of what they were at release.

Interesting, so Pathfinder the devs cared enough to optimize their engine.

Anyone has something similar for Deadfire Loading times ? I didn't time it on my first try but it seems they didn't do anything about it.

No problem with Deadfire loading times, but indeed Kingmaker game startup changed from 2 minutes to 30 seconds here. I lost hope as I thought they will not touch Unity/technical aspects. I thought maybe no techies left in the team. But fortunately I was wrong.

Really ?

So i leave a town to sail > loading
stop on an island because there seem to be something of interest > loading
turns out it was nothing, just worthless loot, i'm sailing again but not before some > loading
on the way (to nakata) the game stops me for some cutscene > loading
After that, some exploration on the boat, which is useless except to bring on some > loading
Back on the boat toward Nekata > Loading
And then, of course, a lot of worthless houses to explore with their fair share of loading

That was fun, right ?

If i had a CD of this game, i think i'd spend some quality time with it searching for the best way to reduce it into dust, just as a little payback.

Sid Meyer's Pirates was 100 times more fun and guess what, 100 times less loading, if they were aiming to do something similar, they pathetically failed.

Unity engine load times are atrocious.
It's an internal issue with how the engine handles resources.
I wish they would fix this before I die and go to the great gameroom in the sky

Grab the Codex by the pussy Pathfinder: Wrath
IRL, this has been an intense, difficult, and exhausting year that will probably be marked as the beginning of my life's premature end. An inflection point towards the abyss.

You can tell because I also joined the Codex this year.

For me it was an awful year, I wish it ended already so I can forget about it and move on.

Game-wise it was lukewarm.

Don't fear. 2018 is not over yet. My cat is an altered beast so I never give up. Many developers don't know how to advise their own game. They just do "oooops the game is already done, we forgot to announce it".
So:

-29th November 2018 it is Thursday = chance of Bannerlord being released

-They said second half 2018 for Disco Elysium and never proposed another release date = chance of Disco Elysium

-Blizzard suicided with Diablo mobile game = rise of RTS, they will do Dune 4 this month

-The chances of Half Life 3 in 2018 are the same of Half Life 3 in 2019 or 2020. Same for Warlords Battlecry 4.

-They will do Total War Three Kingdoms in 2019? Then they could do Birthright the Gorgon's Alliance 2 in 2018, after all it was the western version of three kingdoms game, very similar except for tactical battles that in ROTK was pure turn based. I fear that will just have realm, non suicide regents, naval battles and Anuire and that we will have to wait until 2019 for get all Cerilia realms and 2020 for get all continents.

-Paradox did Duce Nukem achievement, so someone is already working a new Duke Nukem game, will be ready end of 2018.

-Paradox is working for Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2. You can play only as ghoul and game will be released in December 2018. They will release the first playable vampire clan in 2019 as DLC, then a further clan each year. You will play Tzimisce in 2029!

Pretty damn good as far as RPGs go.

- After years of hearing about Piranha Bytes games I finally decided to give them a try and have so far played Gothic II, Risen and am currently playing ELEX and was extremely surprised by how much I have been enjoying them... yeah they are all pretty janky in different ways with lackluster combat, but the worldbuilding, exploration, story and that feeling like your choices actually have some weight to them is just stellar. I cannot recommend those games enough and am looking forward to playing Gothic 3 and Risen 2 & 3 next. I'll probably skip Gothic 1 though, mainly because the control scheme seems like a complete dumpster fire that I would like to avoid.

- Pathfinder: Kingmaker, despite the vast number of bugs and certain questionable design choices has been an enjoyable ride, although I now have it set to the side after putting in about 40 hours and am waiting for the rest of the major issues to get ironed out.

- Bard Tale IV is fun, if not quite what I expected, but I really don't think it's nearly as bad as some of the old Bard's Tale Trilogy diehards insist that it is. The world is interesting, the characters are enjoyable and the combat is fun. It might not be the greatest RPG out there, but it's better than a lot of others.

- Kingdom Come: Deliverance was a real breath of fresh air. It's an exceptional game and is probably my personal GOTY.

- I played Betrayal in Antara for the first time recently which was another pleasant surprise that almost immediately drew me into the story and game world.

- I gave Wizardry 8 a go as well and I might return to it someday, but it didn't really capture my interest after about an hour of playing it and I had a number of other games on my plate that I wanted to play more.

- I'm still having plenty of fun combing through the massive archive of Neverwinter Nights modules and going through all of them will probably take many years.

- I found out about The Dark Mod earlier this year right around the time they came out with their most recent update and it became a bit of an obsession of mine for a few weeks while I worked my way through the majority of the most highly rated campaigns.

- I also recently bought Omikron the Nomad Soul after hearing a bit about it and watching some gameplay on YouTube, but have yet to start it as I'm still pretty deep into ELEX.

- Finally the fully complete version of the English translation of Fallout: Nevada came out and I only recently started it, but it's showing a ton of potential and promise.

All-in-all, 2018 has been an excellent year for my personal enjoyment of RPGs and I still have plenty of games I'm looking forward to in the coming months, 2019 and plenty of older games in my backlog and I really don't see myself getting bored or going through any sort of drought anytime soon.

Play Gothic 1, it's worth overcoming weird controls.
G3 is mediocre and still have some technical issues, Risen 2-3 are pretty bad.

Yeah. Gothic 1 is the best game Piranha Bytes ever made. Most popamolers will suggest 2 is better, for the same reasons they suggest BG2 was better than the first: Higher production values and more polish and more stuff.

But in terms of atmosphere, world building, characters, story, Gothic 1 can't be beaten. If you really, really enjoy Gothic 2, you did yourself a disservice not having completed Gothic 1 first, as it is a continuation of its story...

All i can say, is that i have been hardcore gaming for 3 decades. There are only a few, A FEW, games, that made me SAD when i finished them. Genuinely SAD that i had to disconnect from their world. Gothic 1 was one of those few. What a fucking GEM.
