Best CRPG I played this year: Expedition Vikings

Expedition: Vikings is so underrated! It's everything the codex claims to love in an RPG, but also with very good presentation and polish. I'd even say it's the best CRPG I've played during the entire renaissance.

Game of the year: Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is flawed, but it's an amazing exploration fag game. It does many other things right as well, such as giving you deep character creation, a lore rich Polynesian and Caribbean inspired setting, and a layered faction/reputation system like in New Vegas.

Obsidian did a stellar job listening to player feedback and improving the game post-launch. I'm glad it's finally getting the 95% overwhelmingly positive reviews it deserves.

Disappointments: Kingmaker, Bards Tale IV, Insomnia: The Ark, Underworld Ascendant

I was a backer of Kingmaker and initially gave it a positive review, but I dropped it before the third chapter. It's sluggish, buggy, and has shit RTwP combat. It's 68% mixed score is generous for the state it was released in.

Bards Tale IV is a mash up of a casual dungeon crawler, a casual puzzle game, and a casual adventure game. If you're looking for a casual experience then it's not awful, but I was looking for something more involved.

Insomnia: The Ark has the workings of a very good AA game, but allegedly the original developers quit and it was finished by a skeleton crew. As of now the game is pretty unplayable, and the chances it will be polished are not looking good.

The less said about Underworld: Ascendant the better. On the bright side, I earned quite a lot of money reselling key.

My overall rating: 1/5.

Four out of the five major CRPGs this year were disappointments, and not even a single turn-based isometric. I thought 2016 and 2017 were bad years for CRPG fans, but 2018 takes the prize.

How was 2018 for you?
This summer was really hot, I didn't enjoy it at all. The year overall could be worse, I guess, we still have one month ahead of us. I anticipate at least one huge snowstorm that will cause a mess before the year ends.

It was pretty great, once Bard's Tale IV and Kingmaker released. I was also playing ELEX early in the year so it was cool. Kingmaker being released as the return of CRPG Christ pretty much makes it the best year in recent memory. :)

For me 2018 was a year of action RPG.

I opened it with the second playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas , this time will all DLC. Great time.

Then, after playing several lesser known games for the Really Obscure RPG thread, I finally decided to try Elex. Excellent title. From there I went for a time travel through Piranha Bytes games: Gothic 2 + NOTR and Risen 1. The first is a classic, the second - a mediocre copy.

After that I moved to Two Worlds 2 + dlcs. Completed it, had fun, despite the ambitions strongly limited by the budget.

Now I am dividing my time between Daggerfall and Eye: Divine Cybermancy. Can't really decide what to choose. I might just play both.

Actually, 2018 is quite alright.

Forgot I played a huge run of Fallout: New Vegas this year too, so it was even better. That game was really a marvel.

Ghost of a Tale - The first big surprise of the year and sign for the forthcoming INCLINE. This game is a labour of love. Somewhat simplistic mechanics but outstanding world design and charming as fuck.

Pillars of Eternity 2 - I did enjoy Neketaka and Fort Deadlight however overall the game was a disappointment: convoluted writing, stupid plot and bad combat.

Ori and the Blind Forest - I'm not sure this was released in 2018 but I had a good time with it even though it's not an RPG.

Monster Hunter World - It was one interesting game in which I've sunk many hours. Beating Nergigante or 2 Bazelgeuse is something. Exceptional world design and combat, somewhat lackluster end game content.

Pathfinder Kingmaker - Bugged as fuck but INCLINE nevertheless. Biggest INCLINE since Underrail was released in 2015. It completely obliterated my indulgent view of PoE and it's probably my GOTY.

Insomnia: The ARK - Botched release, disappointing support but what a new world to explore!! INCLINE for me despite the fact that the game ending is still untranslated :)

On the other hand, Bard's Tale 4 and Underworld Ascendant were the biggest disappointments: garbage games without redeeming qualities released in unfinished states.

Bottom line: it doesn't look like a great year for RPGs but, honestly, I'm pretty satisfied with what we got therefore I would say that 2018 was a good year for games.

Edit: It looks like I've completely forgot about Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Tbh I'm still waiting for a patch to make the combat bearable.

I had a ton of fun with Grimoire, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Pathfinder: Kingmaker. They were the definite stand outs of the year to me. Grimoire is the blobber to end all blobbers, KC: D dominated my summer with its interesting combat and engrossing story and Kingmaker is a game that is going to join the list of replayability for me when I'm fully finished. Simply a great CRPG.

Didn't care for PoE2 at all, tried it out and it failed to grab me in any way. After I'm done with Kingmaker I'm going to begin Underrail and have a first playthrough of Temple of Elemental Evil. By then the stars may align and Disco Elysium may finally fucking release.

I wouldn't go that far but it is a decent game.

Why am I not surprised? You just can't slurp on this game enough.

I don't remember you ever saying a positive thing about Kingmaker, let alone being a backer. Stop lying and GTFO with your shit taste.

2018 is a fantastic year for me, because of Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Biggest incline I've seen in last 18 years.

Grab the Codex by the pussy Pathfinder: Wrath
First half was the best in my life for many reasons + graduating college. Second half was the most depressed I ever got and wasn't able to finish anything except one game. I guess it balances out, right? :(

I've complained about it plenty, but it's the only RPG this year that's not half-baked shit.

It earned its 81% very positive score at release, just as it earned the 95% overwhelming positive reviews it's getting now.

You can view my posts from several months ago where I said I backed the game and gave it a positive review. I don't know who you are, or why you think I would lie about that.
