3 is a bit better, but 2 is still very worth playing.

3 is somewhat better gameplay-wise, but 2 is much better looking and has a better campaign. Also 3 pretty much HOMOgenized all factions a little bit too much, going away from HoMM2's formula where every town had a clear powerspike in early/late game due to army costs and strength

I love HoMM a lot and replay HoMM2 campaign almost every year, but nowadays I'd say Eador: Genesis + NH is the best HoMM game

There are no good HoMMs on steam. Steam doesn't have 2 and steam version of 3 is a terrible ubisoft remaster with prosper-tier graphics and no expansions.

Get 2 or 3 on gog or any abadonware site honestly, it's not like their creators would get any money anyway. If you are limited to steam, then roll with a HoMM5 + 5.5 mod or Eador: Genesis + NH mod for best HoMM experience

I'm narrowing it down between II Complete Edition or III Complete Edition on GOG... Why not both? They're both dirt cheap on sale right now.

I never disliked HoMM5 that much, the only complaint I ever got is that it's..... graphically bland. Bar some models, the WoW-era feeling is incredibly heavy, and it saddens me that they got Olivier Ledroit (Black Moon Chronicles, Requiem Chevalier Vampire) to do concept art for the game and mostly failed to follow it up. Maybe the 3d style didn't lend itself to adapt the peculiar Heavy Metal style.

As for the game, it's a very solid timewaster.

Not for everyone, I guess, but if Disciples II managed to have its gorgeous graphics.... HoMM always had a more "light" approach to fantasy, and maybe going hyper-edgy would not have been proper. But the WoW approach was bad and aged badly.

I think you’re referring to “Broken Alliance” the default map, which took me 16 hours to beat:D

HoMM 2-5 are all good, with 3 being the greatest.
Really, the biggest sin of HoMM 4 and 5 is that they disappointed people who wanted a superior game to HoMM 3 but each of them has their own strengths where 3 failed.
