After the utterly brilliant Echoes (in case you missed it: https://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-echoes), another ambitious HL1 mod, The Core, is poised to bring us enrapturing hours of gameplay back in Black Mesa again. Hopefully.

Coming in 2020:

i've been following this mod for a decade. Back then it looked like a decent blackmesa-themed mod, but then they went full retard with high-res textures and models. Now it's stuck somewhere between original Half-Life and games from 2003 - not oldschool enough, not beautiful enough - just ugly.

To celebrate over 20 years of half life, the modding community has escaped the reservation expanded its prospects into new and exiting mediums. Creating next-gen mods like these:

I knew nothing about this project apart from its premise, I had assumed it was "just" a HL2 mod. Cool that they're doing an entirely new game in Unreal. Love the environmental destruction and the dynamic tracks in the snow! The dynamic music is cool too.

"Wake up Mister Freeman, wake up and smell the coke"

TL;DW:

Highlights include "Highway 13", completely broken Nova prospekt teleporter sequence and the final G-man.

Out of nowhere - Neotokyo is getting single player

Neotokyo is an absolute PC gaming classic, a (somehow) free mod for Half-Life 2 that remains one of the prettiest and coolest multiplayer shooters on the planet. And now, 12 years after its first release, it has a singleplayer experience for fans to play through.

really wanted to get into the NT but population wasn't that great...

Yeah I played the first episode. It's okay, you can tell there's some difficulty in morphing these very detailed maps around some kind of structure. It was nice to visit these maps again, but the gameplay is very bland HL2. Without any interesting weapons it just becomes more or less a pointy shooty fest against reskinned cops. Doesn't help they mostly expect you to run around and away from them (levels often has infinitely respawning enemies), so it's mostly a running through the streets sim.

https://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-delta

Half-Life: Delta is a single-player modification for Half-Life.

The plot takes place at the universe of HL. You're playing as a technical engineer of complex "Delta Base" Nick Farell. Unfortunately, the protagonist was in the wrong place at the wrong time, as an experiment at the Black Mesa Research Facility resulted in a resonance cascade that teleported extraterrestrial beings from the world of Xen to Earth.

Features:

  • A new single-player campaign consists of 4 chapters (31 gameplay maps + 1 titles)
  • Total conversion, a lot of new content
  • Atmosphere of the new scientific complex "Delta Base"
  • New weapons
  • New Dark Ambient soundtrack
  • BlueShift-style XEN

just finished this mod. It's alright.

Visually the mod is great - very good mapping, there are loads of new models (characters, weapons, NPCs, props), some neat lighting tricks and weather effects. Despite all of that, it mostly feels like HL1. It's also fairly lengthy - took me roughly 4 hours to complete.

Unfortunately, the other parts of the mod are rather mediocre. The mod doesn't play on HL1's strengths - there aren't many setpiece moments, puzzles or scripted events, most of the time you just walk through a linear path while dealing with enemies, and the encounter design is very repetitive. Story-wise it's just a rehash of HL1/BS: resonance cascade happens, you go through Delta complex while fighting zombies, aliens and finally HECU soldiers, and then you visit Xen for a final battle. And during the middle part of the mod you don't really get the impression of progressing from one distinct location to another - for the most part I felt like i was stuck in a neverending loop of "boring office building - trainyard - boring office building - warehouse - boring office building - etc etc".

"Echoes" it is not, though it's still better than a lot of other relatively new Black Mesa-themed mods (like Residual Point, for example).

Screenshots dump.
