I just noticed Alex Kidd DX will never hit GOG; not that anyone cares. Is Alex a monkey boy or something? I never played that game, Adventure Island series, the Wonder Boy series, or the Bonk series. Did I miss out? Some of the systems, esp Bonk were out of my reach. I noticed one Kidd game had an arcade version for two player mode. You'd think the DX would unlock all the previous games in the best possible fashion. I guess I should have owned a SMS or at least the converter for a complete genesis.

after switching from steam to gog in 2013 I actually switched back to 100% steam a few years ago when gog started pushing their porn game releases every few days, instead of actual good old games.
I know steam has tons of porn games too but at least I don't have to look at the newest loli crap every time I open the client. fuck you gog, no support for degenerates.
plus people going crazy over 10+ year old releases like Skyrim coming to gog, just because "MUH DRM FREE" ..... come on man. I've been on steam since 2007, never had a ban, never had my account hacked, never had a key revoked, pretty much always have internet. there was only one time I've had no internet, for an entire month. and what did I do? play on steam in offline mode, because I didn't have interesting gog games installed.

The point of having DRM free games is that you have your own copy of the game so you can install the interesting games whenever you want wherever you want without requiring internet connectivity or a custom client (my regular web browser can download files just fine and my OS can launch programs by itself without needing the help of a launcher or whatever).

the thing for me though is, during that single month since 2013 in which I didn't have internet, I also hadn't made any backup copies. so the biggest plus of DRM free wasn't a plus at that moment at all and the non-interesting games I had installed through gog were as available as my go-to games like Warband on steam.
the downloading on gog has also gone down the tube since they discontinued the gog downloader. I'm not using that galaxy launcher.

It isn't just that you don't need internet, it is that you are in control of the download you have. It could be because you have no Internet - or because you want to play it in a computer that is not connected to the Internet (e.g. some older PC for retro games or because you are on some old version of Windows and do not want it to update / see the Internet - e.g. personally i use Linux as my main OS but also have an old version of Win10 on my PC that i use very rarely so i don't want to bother with updates and turn off my router if i decide to boot to Windows - obviously Steam wouldn't work there and isn't even installed) or because you want to install the game on a PC without requiring any client to login to or because you do not want to send data to the store you bought the game from about what games you play or because you want to keep around specific versions of a game (e.g. i use a custom DOSBox build with a specific version of Alien Trilogy released on Zoom Platform - later versions have changes that do not work with it - also i have some games from GOG that have 32bit builds that were removed in later versions) or because you do not want some specific update (again on GOG some games replaced the original engine/executable of an old game with some newer made alternative one) or whatever other reason really.

Sure, i've been there myself at the past before i decided to keep my own downloads (i also originally used GOG mainly as a place to get old games that were preconfigured to work on modern PCs), but that isn't really an issue with GOG itself or DRM free games in general.

When you click on a game in your account, more info roll out from where you can select your OS and download the game either using Galaxy or as an offline installer (you may need to click on the "Download offline backup game installers" text to make the links appear, i do not remember if they are visible or not by default but the site remembers if you have the links visible or not so if you click to show them once the links will remain visible for all games).

I had keys revoked on Steam. There were for beta versions of shitty Kickstarter games that I don't really care about so I'm not too bothered about it but clearly valve has already built the functionality and is willing to use it under the right circumstances. Its only a matter of time until those circumstances expand - and the use of that feature might not even be valve's choice but could be ordered for your ((safety)). Best to make sure you are in control of your games before it's too late. Even saying you'll just pirate those games if Steam ever pulls anything on you relies on the games and the versions you want still being shared somewhere.

Valve has also threatened me with unspecified account restrictions twice and while that probably would not have prevented me from playing my Steam games I still prefer not giving them any more money if that's how they act.

But yeah if you're not backing up the standalone installers then there's little advantage in using GOG over Steam.

One was when they tried to get away with refunding the steam dick deposit to my steam wallet instead of the original payment method and I told them that that would not fly.
The other one was for repeatedly filing refund requests for one game until someone with the authority do do anything other than reply with provably false scripted responses would look at it.
So not unprompted and also not entirely unexpected but still soured my opinion of Valve.
