Until now, console gamers defend their lack of mods because they don't want to intervene the "original vision" of the developers.

Console versions will have mod support in the future, according to Todd. Nobody knows how or if it'll work, but they know giving everyone access to stuff that fixes their shit for free is good for business.

If they managed to do that, that'd be impressive.

Seeing how crazy it can sometimes get just putting mods together and up and running on PC, I don't really see that happening but for the really basic mods. Seeing how "next gen" consoles can't even run the base game properly, I also don't really see how they'd handle most mods either. I mean some mods can completely fuck up your game on PC, how the fuck do you handle that on Console when you can't even backup files and shit.
I also do NOT see Microsoft or Sony just "letting it run" without a massive approval process which will render the entire thing too frustrating anyway for everyone. At least when you can't you know you can't, but when you're told you can, then realize the only thing you have on the table is a vault suit color change and a name change for your dog companion while you've been salivating at the crazy shit people get on PC, then you get pissed off :)

Edited: Also the game was sold with an ESRB of M, not A. M is "ok" I guess for some parents and console makers, but when you start seeing your kid playing a giant horse hung futas skull fucking children on your giant screen TV with the game your bought him for Christmas, that might raise a few eyebrows. :)

Could be wrong though...
Yes, the approval process is a big question mark, but in the end it just takes 2 or 3 people to test mods on PC first and see if they break anything. Players will probably have to agree to something saying they're not responsible for game-breaking mods, specially MS.

Having just gonna through the arduous process of modding new Vegas, on which I used a script extender, a mod organizer, a mod cleaning tool, a mod load list organizing tool, and a bunch of edits and tweaks... Just to get the game to launch with the mods playing nice with each other. Despite all these hours spent trying to make the game run smooth and stable, the damned thing still crashes now and again.

Imagine all that in a console environment, it's impossible and the scope of the mods on the console will be reduced once they realize that installing a mod is just half the work.

The console people are mostly concerned about the chain of trust. It's a problem when the signed code produced by Bethesda can load and execute other code written by random people on the internet, since on the surface a mod might say it adds giant cocks to Brahmin and makes it possible to have sex with them, but it might actually enable the console to load random code and rewrite the currently running executable image, allowing people to run pirated games and other unapproved things.

I'm sure when Xbox mods come online eventually they'll be limited to the most trivial of cosmetic things so that no one has to take any responsibility for security auditing piles of crappy mods.

I'd imagine they wanna do something like a more strictly regulated variation of the Steam Workshop. One that'll at best add a few new weapons or armor reskins, nothing that could potentially lead to hard crashes from the game due to a huge variety of mods that each alter the game in their own way conflicting with one another.

If I recall, Unreal Tournament III on PS3 actually had mod support, and this was back in 2007. I never got to experience it myself (who the hell plays UT on a console?) but you could seriously just put mods onto a memory drive and stick it into the PS3 and it would detect them. It supported maps, mutators, custom characters, and even full blown total conversions. It never really took off because of a mixture of copyright concerns and the fact that UT III wasn't very popular even on PC, much less on PS3.

There's a huge amount of money on the line. Selling the free labor of thousands of people is way too tempting, especially given the "consoles are an old-fashioned revenue stream" corporate line. They'll try really, really hard to make it work.

I had a bad feeling reading your post. What's it? *gulp* Maybe I should tell you....

You know consolitis, how it it's a frankenstein attempt to adopt a universal UI for PCs and consoles? The same thing might happen for modding. They will introduce something to allow modding on PCs AND consoles, but it will come at the cost of some consolitis symptoms expressed in the modding system. This could have very far range and even subtle consequences. Consolitis doesn't have to be obvious. Sometimes it's hard to know the difference between it and good features.

I wanted to write about how this is not true since I played through iit. Oh well, just read the wiki quest if you wanna know. Skip to the end if you got tired of the whole bullshit.
Contrary to other settlements around the wasteland, Covenant is surrounded by tall concrete walls peppered with defensive turrets, and the houses and the yard are in oddly pristine condition. The Sole Survivor even mentions how everything looks almost pre-war. Speak to Honest Dan. He'll explain he has been hired to investigate a missing caravan and find Amelia Stockton, the missing daughter of the prominent Stockton family. He also suggests the inhabitants of Covenant might be involved in both cases. He also offers to split the reward in exchange for help in the investigation. Passing speech checks with him might net more caps and info.

Exit Covenant and head north-east along the road to find the remains of the missing caravan and recover Deezer's Lemonade but little else. Questioning the inhabitants of Covenant yields little info, they are adamant about having nothing to do with it, they are also oddly nice, almost saccharine. To find more clues, enter the house on the far side of the settlement to discover a holding cell, a bookcase with self-help material and a locked computer. Hack the computer when no one is looking to find out Covenant's real purpose. Alternatively, enter the shop and take the piece of paper from the trash can or pass increasingly harder speech checks with Penny Fitzgerald to reveal the clues. Another alternative is to either pickpocket the key from Jacob Ogden or pick the lock to the house directly left of the gate and find the piece of paper near the door. You can also find the location of the Compound at the office terminal. The door and the computer are both Master locks.

Once learning about the existence of the Compound, one option is either talk to Dan or go alone. Trying to exit Covenant, Jacob will be at the gate and will try to convince the Sole Survivor to drop the case, even going as far as offering a bribe.

To find the Compound, head to the fishing spot west of Covenant on the other side of the lake and enter the outflow pipe. If the Sole Survivor told Honest Dan about the Compound, he will be waiting inside and will follow. Continue along the pipe to face armed guards and turrets. By successfully passing a speech check, the Sole Survivor is escorted deep inside the complex to meet Doctor Chambers. Otherwise, fighting through the complex becomes necessary. On the way there clues about people being held captive and ongoing experiments/torture can be found.

Once confronted by the Doctor, she explains her intentions of trying to reveal hidden synths who infiltrated the populace by creating and perfecting the SAFE test. A sort of psychological test involving studying reactions of the subject to several situational questions. Improving the test involves establishing a "baseline" and then requires various forms of psychological and physical torture to incite reactions from the subject. She also explains, the reason for capturing Amelia is because they believe she is a synth infiltrator.

At this point, The Sole Survivor has two choices.

  1. Deciding to side with the Doctor, Honest Dan will become hostile and killing him will be necessary. Also, inspecting Amelia's body reveals she was indeed a synth. Return to Jacob to win Covenant as a usable settlement.
  2. Deciding to side with Honest Dan and free Amelia will turn the Doctor and the rest of the Compound hostile, making it necessary to kill them all. Amelia is in one of the cells up the stairs which can be opened by using the computer terminal. Speak to Dan to receive a reward. By passing increasingly harder speech checks, more reward can be earned. Choosing this option will also turn the inhabitants of Covenant hostile. Kill them all except Deezer to win it as a usable settlement.

Doubt it. Battered Gamer Syndrome will kick in and most people will be grateful for the boon, silencing any entitled brat who complains. You will take your pink vault suit and embark on an adventure with your loyal husky Fuckmeat like a true gamer.

Speaking of BGS, I wonder how many retweets and favorites that sick iceburn that Hines unleashed upon the jet nerd already has.

Is there something that does not make sense with this quest?

If you want to convince the players of the dark and sinister nature of these synth abductions, it will not do anything for players when they simply see the aftermath. Why do they keep showing us the aftermath on the world NPCs when it can be made to happen to the player instead? Why not have someone like Preston Garvey, a somewhat 'good person' you knew from the start being replaced by a synth mid game? You don't realize it at first, but a radio calling you back to base was followed by a request from him to do questionable things like forcing some settlements to submit and plant certain crops of his choosing. Maybe you don't question it, follow the compass and couldn't find an explanation why this is happening and whine about bad writing. That is always an option, but those willing to dig deeper found Preston's behavior strange, with a CHA check you may discover irregularity in his behavior or you could find out where he got those seeds and deduce he is replaced by the Institute because the Minutemen is getting too influential to ignore. You rescue the real him, and took out the institute cell responsible for this operation. Quest done, that's one negative experience between the Institute and you.

Such an experience would actually make you realize how bad this can get if the synth problem is ignored and the necessity of the Covenant project. Not this fucking 'oooh this town is so weeeeirdddd and a dark past lead to this 'necessary evil' being done for the 'greater good'. Bravo, 'town with a twist' cliche presented well.

Lab Coat Lady after I murdered her entire operations crew:
So how about it 'Mr. I never experienced anything bad about synth and just want to rescue that girl you kidnapped after we murdered the caravan'? Will you accept that what I'm doing is a necessary evil and means to fight the synth threat? Because I will not compromise.

To that my protag replied: Of course!

Not.
The only sane response is a 12ga shell to her head in slow-mo.

It's true, Bethesda the developer is pretty small. It's funny, with the amount of money these games are making they could run their studio for like, decades. Luckily, their publishing arm has plenty of crappy shooters to waste it on.

Crappy shooters... like Fallout, 4 amirite?

Updating my impressions, with numberic scores, for once.

Gameplay 0/10 (as an RPG) - 2/10 (as an FPS) - 7/10 (as a "hiking simulator with guns")

F4 is NOT an RPG, nor it is an FPS. It's a postapocalyptic hiking simulator, with guns and permanent easy mode (VATS). As such, I have to admit, F4 does actually a decent job. Walking around, checking things out, killing everything on sight, not killing everything on sight, sneaking, exploring: this stuff actually works out fairly well.

RPG Elements 1/10

The overhauled "system" really sucks. Again, worse than Skyrim's. Luck's completely useless as per usual, any speech related skills are just forgettable, since the conversation will course-rape you anyway. 95% of the times, speech is just used to ask for more money when taking a quest.

Crafting 6/10 (RPG fans) - 8/10 (Sims fans)

Crafting and the "Sims" side of the game are controversial. If you're into that kind of stuff, I guess this is as good as a non-Sims game has ever gotten. If you're just an RPG fan who for some reason is playing this game, then you'll be surprised to find out that the crafting is actually quite alright: better than any D&D based videogame, better than TWitcher's, better than mmorpgs. Well and who cares if one's allowed to stash tons of hardware and scrap in their backpack. I mean, it's not like the game has any pretense of realism. Still, The settlement management thing is, first off, pointless (like the Stronghold thing in PoE) and, secondly, horribly implemented (let alone, as usual, a sneaky and dull and yet ocmpletely forgettable timesink to pad the game's length). It's better to just stick to the basic "crafting" side, if you ask me.

Writing 1/10

There's none worth mentioning. In fact, all of it really stands out for being terribad. I'm not just talking "bad", I'm talking "actually worse than Skyrim's" level of "bad". From the general storyline, to the try-hard plot twists, to the faux moral considerations they try to face the player with, to the quest subplots, to the way it all doesn't quite fit together, to the non-existing "choices", to the actual "literary" aspects of the very writing itself, it's all meh. And again, for what little I've seen so far, the player will quickly become master of all "factions" (Minutemen and BoS already down, and I suspect they'll soon make me leader of Goodneighbor too...).

Tech 8/10

Looks good, EPIC soundtrack, haven't experienced that many glitches/bugs/CTDs.

Value for Money? 2/10

Hell no. Maybe in 4 years, when it's for 2.99$ on a X-mas sale (no point though, by that time we'll all be saving up for Fallout 7, which'll be set in and around Fukushima [weaboo kawaii desuneeeeee!] and will have Godzillas instead of Deathclaws).

Final Score 4/10

I played worse cruds.

Has everyone forgotten what a cringeworthy piece of shit Fallout 3 was?

Aside from the dialogue wheel and the removal of skills, it's a huge improvement in many ways.

I like most of the characters (even if they're not really original), I think it looks great, it has huge map filled to the brim with interesting locations and scenery.

Is there something that does not make sense with this quest?

The part where it is "other than generic peaceful town with dark secret" when it is exactly that?

"Generic", even so it's "your mileage can vary" thing, of cause.

They have tied this theme with the game plot in a logical way. And I like the lampshading of baseball question having no sense in GOAT.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
The "small team" defense is the most imbecilic thing I've read this month and I have to read EU Comission reports as a part of my job.

Beth games are crappy because they're a small team? Your games make a billion dorra each so get a fucking bigger team and start producing games that are actually finished and don't look like a texture modded Oblivion for fucks sake.
