After the first F2 playthrough, I would always recruit Sulik as soon as I got that $350. Makes the gecko and rat-infested areas so much easier, and $350 is pocket money (for a thief char, huehue) anyway. Iit's the price of, what, 1 stim, at that stage? And you don't have anything big to buy until Den anyway.

F2's beginning is shit. You will get constantly murdered by everything and you'll (probably) be grinding geckos or whatnot to get past that bit. It's worse if you try to make anything other than combat boy. It's the main reason keeping me from replaying it much more than I do.

It does get better -- like, a lot better -- later on. It could still have used some :balance: as the difficulty fluctuates wildly between getting constantly one-shotted and godmode, and completely loses any semblance of challenge once you find out where the godmode gear is and know how to get it early on. Which is a shame as a lot of the quests and content is fucking awesome.

Temple of Trials is just plain bad (one of the worst RPG beginning I can think of) and Klamath could have used more talky quests (though once you get Sulik he can easily take on geckos, radscorpions and rats by himself) but I just can't subscribe to this idea that life should be easy for every build at any point of the game, it makes the game world feel artificial, safe and predictable. Even in first Fallout pacifist run is never something you do on your first playthrough, you only attempt it once you're well familiarized with game systems, locations, enemies etc. it's not something game encourages you to do but more like a gimmicky type playthrough.

Wasteland is supposed to be a dangerous place, why should a pure car salesman (or doctor, scientist etc.) type have an easy ride until he hires some muscle or learns to handle himself in a fight? Making hybrid, multi-focused characters in Fallout 1/2 is rather easy and it makes no sense you set out to travel on your own in such an environment without any combat training whatsoever.

Regarding god mode gear and losing (any) challenge, I never found that to be the case as by the time I get my hands on it I'm facing opponents who are equipped with the same. Of course, you can be cheap and go for it straight away but don't blame the game for player's shortcomings.

ZagorTeNej Just to make it clear, I do not want the game to be easy for every build at any point of the game. I don't think anyone does, not even Saint Josh. That's a canard the hivemind made up to have something to hate on. I can't in fact find anything to object to in your post, except the last paragraph.

My problem with the difficulty in FO2 is that it fluctuates wildly. It starts out really punishing. Then you get Small Guns some way past 100% and a nice small collection of small guns, at which point it's just a matter of shooting things in the eyes, occasionally reloading when someone gets a lucky crit and one-shots you, which is really dull. Then you wander into some of the endgame-level monsters which I won't name here because spoilers, and you're getting one-shotted again. Then you pump Energy Weapons or Big Guns, depending, get Combat Armor Mk 2, and shoot them in the eyes again, so it goes back to yawningly easy. And then eventually you get Power Armor, and shoot everyone else in the face. Then the game ends.

Put another way, I am not a fan of FO2's combat. The problem is that FO2 is too damn big for the mechanics. FO1 is small enough that it's able to maintain a relatively sane level of challenge all through; FO2 just swings wildly, only spending a relatively small amount of time in the sweet spot.

In other words, it's badly unbalanced.

Edit: To clarify, I am fully aware there are other ways to make the game pointlessly easy as well. That was just the most obvious one I could think of.

It seems like 90% of times you die in Fallout 2 is death from a critical hit or burst when you have almost full health. There are very few interesting fights where your hp actually decreases gradually in reasonable amounts and you need to think about when to use items and when to attack and so on.

Fallout 1 is the same way. Almost all my deaths were from criticals.

And I hated it ofc.

I tried to gain levels in the hope the chance would reduce and my hp would make me more able. But nope.

Turns out only Luck helps, but no matter how high ti's the crits still happen.

You can avoid combat in various ways in Fo1. But i still don't like crits.

You should try to spam the first aid skill. Even if you skill is pretty low, you should still manage to heal you enough to have more than one hit point when leaving the Temple.
After that, avoid too much fight until Sulick & Vic tag along.

Doesn't it take roughly like a minute to run through the temple if you just run?
fuck if i know, do the ants stop chasing?

Once you get enough distance you can just end combat and they ignore you. A minute might be a bit too fast, though.
TBH ToT is annoying but not much more than that.

Temple ain't hard. Don't understand why anyone would have problems with it. Only problem I had with the temple is it felt manufactured. Maybe flamboyant. The rats in Fo1 were umm humble and quick combat introduction.

I didn't like Fo1 all that well :0

Have yet o pick up Fo2 again and play aon serious level.

Yeah they have this nice big stone temple but prefer to languish in the brahmin skin tents, I mean they could at least store other important things there besides a single vault suit/pipboy (you really got to wonder how many chosen ones were sent out before you because several people from the vault joined the vault dweller in founding Arroyo). Not to mention arroyo people turning into complete tards in maybe 2 generations.

Wasn't Arroyo a town made of the gals the Vault Dweller fucked along its way after he was forced to leave the Vault and their kids? I can't remember the details right now.
