So it wasn't the absolutely awful shitshows that were RE5 and 6 that killed RE but a game that went back to the series original roots?

Why would they call this piece of shit even RE7 in the first place if it is meant as a reboot of the series? And why did it take them so many years to make this cheap Outlast clone that any indie studio could have cobbled together more competently?

And what ever happened to the Panta Rhei engine? All that R&D money flushed down the toilet for this crap?

They call it RE probably because it's RE. I don't think we know enough to say for certain that this is a generic youtube horror game. It was a fukken teaser trailer and everyone knows that teaster trailers don't show anything lol.

This is pretty much the case of Capcom aping currently popular trends, which is what they love to do with numbered RE games. Cinematic TPS and co-op shooters were the hottest thing back when RE 5 was released, and they pushed that "style" to extreme with RE6.
Slenderman/Outlast style of horror games is all the rage these days, so that is what they're going for with RE7. There is also a nifty bonus here in that they can claim how they're going back to the style of earlier and horror-oriented RE games ("We listed to the wishes of our fans!), which is only half true in this case.

3DS has a nice selection of games (especially JRPGS), so I bought one. I'll probably play this Zelda with the WiiU of a friend of mine, though, I don't want that shitty console.
