The Nvidia leaks had the release date as the 1st of January 2023. Obviously a placeholder date, but it might give an indication that they originally were aiming for a release some time next year.

I'm gonna blowjob Dragon's Dogma again here because this announcement made me do another Bitterblack runthrough for a few hours.

In that making of video they did I really hope they keep sticking to the whole, "do these traditionally high fantasy monsters and creatures but do them well." I remember when playing through DD for the first time a couple years back that many fantasy RPGs have you fighting something like a gryphon, but how many of them let your character actually feel like they're engaged in proper battle with a gryphon? That's what DD nails best, it goes into your imagination of what it'd look like having a multi-headed hydra trying to devour one of your party members while you desperately try to cut its head off to free them.

Capcom, you can fuck up SF6 but please don't fuck this up. I need this.

‘Dragon’s Dogma 2’ Is Finally Happening

ForbesMagazine said:
There are some video game franchises that take an awful long time between game releases.

We’re still waiting to see whether or not Half-Life 3 ever comes out, but games we know are in the works like Elder Scrolls VI and GTA VI are sequels long in the making.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim originally launched in 2011. GTA V came out two years later. There is nothing even resembling a release date for either of these sequels.

Unlike your yearly Call Of Duty or Assassin’s Creed games, these franchises seem designed to actively keep you from parting with your money for as long as humanly possible.

Then there are the games that you really hope get a sequel but you’re never quite sure that day will come. For me, one such game has been Dragon’s Dogma, a Japanese RPG from Capcom that I rank as one of my all-time favorites. Sure, we got the Dark Arisen expansion/overhaul which was great, but Dragon’s Dogma came out a decade ago and until now, there hasn’t been so much as a whisper as to whether it would ever get a sequel.

Today, during a 10th anniversary retrospective for Dragon’s Dogma, game director Hideaki Itsuno revealed finally that Dragon’s Dogma II is currently in development at Capcom. At the very end of the video (below) he dramatically unzips his jacket to reveal the Dragon’s Dogma II logo.

This is exciting news. Dragon’s Dogma is such a singular experience. There’s really no other game quite like it. The combat is terrific. The Pawn system—where you can “hire” the NPC companions of other players to join you in your adventures—is charming and clever. The world of Gransys is deep and fascinating. Along with Dark Souls (a franchise with a much more regular release cycle) this is one of my all-time favorite action-JRPGs.

And now we finally get a sequel. Someday. There’s really nothing else we know about the game at this point other than that it’s in development and will presumably release sometime in the future. Hopefully not the distant future. Hopefully before Elden Scrolls VI, Half-Life 3 and, one supposes, The Winds Of Winter.

Hope they will use Deep Down tech for it:

They're using the RE engine. Deep Down's Panta Rhei engine development has ceased a long time ago and was never used in any commercial product.

They didn't announce any engine for it. People act as if every engine can be used for everything. If that was the case then developers would choose say UE3 and make all games in it. Somehow it didn't happen which means engines are not your jack of all trades master of all.

RE engine so far has been shown to work great for small games with static lighting. It is entirely different matter if it can work in open world game with huge size, dynamic time of day and so on.

When Monster Hunter World was made RE engine already was a thing and developers could easily switch to it. Somehow they used MT Framework instead. World supports dynamic time of day.

Switch Rise uses RE engine but suprise suprise it doesn't support dynamic time of day.

-----------

So i wouldn't be so sure about use of RE engine. IT doesn't mean they won't use it but there may be good reasons for them not to use it.

RE Engine is good because it means the game will likely be quite moddable.

It's also fairly well optimised by modern standards.

if true i don't expect a release before 2024 .
considering an average of 5 years for the development of a AA/AAA game, it should have been released in 2023. With plandemic and shit i think is safe to assume one/two year delay, unless they make another unfinished game

RE Engine is Capcom's main in-house engine now, like how MT Framework was before it. They've used it in everything from their modern Resident Evil games, to Devil May Cry 5, that Capcom Arcade Stadium game, Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection, and it's being used for the upcoming Exoprimal, Pragmata, and Street Fighter 6. This game was also announced to be using RE Engine. As things are now, unless stated otherwise, it's probably safe to assume all Capcom games for the foreseeable future will run on RE Engine...which should probably be called RM Engine since it's actually called the Reach for the Moon Engine.

Deep Down's Panta Rhei engine seems to be dead, or at least on the back burner. It was originally meant to be the MT Framework replaced, but that mantle got taken by RE Engine, and there hasn't been anything shown of either Deep Down or Panta Rhei for like six years now. There hasn't been any news about either since 2019.

Recent Monster Hunter releases still used MT Framework, so Perkel wasn't entirely wrong to doubt.

Pre Covid they were looking at a release sometime between April and June of this year. Who knows, maybe the whole reason they delayed the announcement to the 16th was because June 16th was originally the date they were looking at to release the game...maybe not, but it falls within the original release window they were looking at.

REGOLITH seems to be Pragmata, which was set to be released this year but got pushed back to 2023.

Given what was said about the SHIELD (and I guess SHIELD G) around the time of the leak, that would seem to be Exoprimal, which is coming out in 2023.

The two games listed as Indies 2 & Indies 2 port would seem to be Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium (comes out July 22) and Capcom Fighting Collection, (comes out June 24) so those only got pushed back a bit.

Street Fighter 6 has been announced to coming out next year.

And Resident Evil 4 Remake, which was set to come out sometime between October and December (guessing it would've come out sometime before Christmas, given its a horror title October seems likely) as a Q4 2022 title is now coming out as a Q1 2023 title on March 24th.

Looking at the other stuff, it seems totally possible it gets a 2023 release. Maybe even other stuff happened to push it back, and if they aren't even showing anything of it now (although they've likely got stuff they could show at this point) like they are all those other games it's definitely not releasing alongside them, but if it was actually going to originally come out around this time this year a late 2023 release doesn't seem impossible. If by years end though we still haven't seen anything of DD2, then yeah, it's not coming next year.

Monster Hunter Rise on the Switch uses RE Engine. World used MT Framework, but World would've been in development when RE Engine was first created for RE7.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 also used MT Framework, but that could also be because it was completely developed by Capcom. The last major release Capcom used MT Framework on was World four years ago.

Completely unrelated to the DD2 reveal, I'm feeling an itch to replay as a Mystic Knight again. My last 4 replays have all been with a Magick Archer so I'm ready for something different. Unfortunately I'm gonna have to do the Sorcerer rodeo all over again. I hope for the sequel they don't tie stat growths with your vocation.
