Are assassin and ranger subclasses ? I could only choose between fighter, strider and mage at the beginning.

Ranger, Warrior, Mystic Knight, Magick Archer and Assassin are advanced and hybrid classes that are unlocked once you reach Gran Soren, the capital. Continue the main quest and you will reach it eventually.

An advice about sidequest that can be useful. Do not open if you want to go completely blind
I recommend to visit Cassardiss, the starting village, before going to Gran Soren. There are some interesting missable quests. There are actually a number of quest that become unavailable as you progress. They aren't usually hard to find but is good to keep an eye for them.

I am flabbergasted by the save/load system. Is the only way to load the manual save by quitting to the menu without saving and then loading the game ? Restoring the checkpoint does for sure not restore the manual save.

I am also bit confused about the island that is unlocked at the beginning, that you can access at night at the harbor. Am I supposed to do it when I get the quest ?

No. If it's your first playthrough, you should ignore Bitterblack Isle for now and just play the regular game.
However, before quitting the game for any reason—completion, boredom, frustration—go there first!

If you fancy a challenge, you can go there now. But you'll spoil the main game, because you'll be overleveled when you return and there won't be any challenge left.

Not really. That Island is part of the Dark Arisen content, which was a short of expansion released some time after the original game. Is the hardest content of the game and pretty much the endgame of Dragon's Dogma. Is usually better to finish the game first before tackling that content. It also contain some spoilers for the main storyline if I recall right, so I'll suggest waiting for NG+.

The boon and bane of ultra complete editions years after release ... I'll do the normal content first. Are there more dlc inserts like this ? I see no list on the GOG page or ingame so I've got no clue and I don't like spoilers from faqs, when I play a game for the first time.

That is officially the reason I never beat Dragon's Dogma.

Strap Yourselves In Serpent in the Staglands Shadorwun: Hong Kong Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
If you've defeated the undead dragon and dealt with the Seneschal, you've "beaten" Dragon's Dogma. The Bitterblack Isle is clearly a distinct bonus challenge, not some form of a "real" ending.
Pity the Seneschal put up such a shitty fight. I hope the ng+ dude can actually last for more than a punch.

Once you reach Gran Soren, there are some armor pieces available in storage which kinda trivialise the early parts of the game. Ignore them.

Except the Lionspine that looks cool

I think the most important advice for enjoying Dragon's Dogma is: take your time, experiment, and don't use a wiki too early!
This is one of those games that keep getting better even after a hundred hours, if you allow it to.

How does character level and vocation level work ? It look like vocation level unlocks new skills in the vocation but what does character level do except raising health ?

That's one topic that merits consulting a wiki, but you shouldn't obsess over it. Even a completely 'gimped' character can finish all content with any vocation with the right gear, even solo.
What's important is that as you level up your current vocation, you unlock augments, which carry over between vocations. So again: experiment! Not just with items, or playing solo, but also try the different vocations!

Character level affect your stats, depending on the class you leveled in, so a "wrong" class can fuck up your growth.

(people are going to say "but tier 3 bitterblack weapons make your stats irrrelevant!", which is pointless because they mean you have completed the entire fucking game already)

frankly just play the class you want to play

don't spam sorcerer levels to min max your magick archer. by then you'll be finished with the game already.

just know that a level 100 sorcerer doesn't have much in terms of physical stats so they probably won't be that effective in switching to fighter.

No. There's some message board quests for bonus items that were DLC in the original release, but they're simple fetch quests for unusual but not really powerful items.

Is there a sneaking/stealing mechanic in the game so that you can steal items from npcs ?

Not really, but keep an eye on the shop called The Black Cat. It lets you create false copies of objects and with a little experimenting it can lead to interesting results, specially relating to quests.

It seems that the maximum damage is the most important stat to overcome enemy defenses. Is there a way to see the damage output of a skill without trying it ?

Guys, some nights ago, I had a dream that Dragon's Dogma 2 was out.
And it had a fall damage mitigating exploit (similar to Skull Splitter), if you used a consumable and spammed the jump button during the animation (yes, animated like in the Gothics/Soulsbornes, no more paused menu tomfoolery) before jumping off a ledge.
The landing-on-your-face animation still played when hitting the ground, but you wouldn't take any damage.

I don't know what this means exactly... but it is an omen!
