I vaguely remember playing it, but I don't think I actually played it for long. There were a host of games I wanted to play before my old PC expired. What made the "Crossroad Keep" so interesting to you?
The problem with stronghold mechanics in cRPGs is that they only work as full-fledged mini-game. It is pointless to have a place to upgrade if the only thing it does is to provide better weapons. For that you have crafting. Either you implement a stronghold and it has quests and NPCs in it, or you don’t. The half-assed job of most cRPGs in this department is a waste of time.
Anyways, I have fond memories of The Crossroad Keep because you have to properly manage the place. Not only you need to decide where to invest your money (better equipment for the troops, recruiting, improving the roads, the walls, etc.), but you also need to find the right people to fulfil special roles in the place (who is going to be in charge of recruiting, training for special missions, etc.). NWN2 managed to do this brilliantly because they integrated the game with this place. You find new people and ore mines, send them to the keep, and so forth. I have no delusions about NWN2. Overall it’s an abortion of a cRPG. Yet it has the keep, which is awesome.
