Darkwood (Survival horror)

We need an UN investigation and subsequent report on the harmful influence of Darkwood on online communities.

Wow, I was really excited to play this and I boot it up and it has... SNES graphics. This game was made in the 2010s. WHY DOES IT HAVE RETRO STYLE GRAPHICS!? FUCK. OFFFFFFF.

I know, right?

Darkwood gets showered with praise, yet the graphics are about as good as Grand Theft Auto #1.

I played it for about 10 minutes, and the sound was cool (features a creepy echo effect), but the top-down graphics are total shit.

-----

Is Darkwood worth getting into once you get past the beginning of the game?

No, it's a shit game. Days are too short, nights are boring as fuck, mechanisms are unbalanced, the proc gen/exploration sucks. Extremely overrated.
The crazy thing is that, despite all these shortcomings, it's still in the top 1% or so of games released in the last decade.

The usual decline faggots fork and that furry weirdo making an appearance. This is why we can't have nice things. This is why good games are so rare. Actually play the game you halfwits, not a brief session after which you decide you understand the game and dismiss it for "SNES graphics" that are in fact extremely well done and high quality.

Obviously the game brings out in the worst in people. We're only a couple posts away from rape threats. Which is incline, honestly.
...you guys are too autistic to realize myself and United Nations are joking with eachother? I mean we are bashing each other for sure, but it's in good spirits.

Edit: checked my alerts and saw UN has spammed stuff on my profile. Now I am not so sure lol. What a bitch.

Ash, I don't care about your mods nor your favourite indigaemz. Dankwank is fine, but your incessant herpderping about how awesome it is and how inclined you are for liking it is incredibly dumb and not funny. These kinds of games and your kinds of mods have nothing to do with the actual games of the past, it's all nuindi mooder goona mood shit. Stop posting until you learn not to be butthurt about people not stroking your ego.

Well, they finally revealed their next game...

Kid soccer tactics is kind of a neat idea, but I'd be lying if I didn't say how incredibly disappointed I am that this is what we've been waiting for as a next game from Acid Wizard Studio. Especially for how long it took.

:negative:

Edit: Actually no, it's not a neat idea. It just fucking sucks.

Finally a spiritual successor to the turn based basketball we could have had had Barkley 2 survived.

I had big hopes for Acid Wizard but instead we got this high estrogen distraction.
KIDS. SCHOOLS. UGLY ART. SOCCER BUT IT IS TURN-BASED OR WHATEVER.

The game may very well be good for what it is and genuine, but Darkwood puts them firmly as modern masters of more elaborate game design in the making and it is such a shame to steer from that path

Eh, sadly not looking that way.

They had an awesome prison game they were working on, but they ditched it because "Alas, the subject matter of prison life was not a good match for most of the team and we’ve decided to move on to something else."
We spitballed ideas for new games and after a while came up with something we codenamed The Prisoner:
gaming-tells-story-political-prisoner-trapped-inside-factory-turned-prison-fictional-Eastern-Europe-setting-somewhere-80-have

The game tells a story of a political prisoner trapped inside a factory-turned-prison, in a fictional Eastern Europe setting somewhere in the 80’s. The game would have you trying to survive the harsh reality of a place like this from a first-person perspective, with a unique gameplay twist. Your character has a very sought after talent in a place like this - he can draw sweet tattoos! There was supposed to be a whole language of the symbols that you would draw, and knowing what to draw, based on what the “client” wanted, his allegiance and the crimes he did, was part of the game. All of this combined with elements of survival, exploration and many friendly faces to meet

So you see, even though we’ve drifted from Darkwood a bit, we’re still very much into making very atmospheric projects. Alas, the subject matter of prison life was not a good match for most of the team and we’ve decided to move on to something else.

What. The. Fuck. The couple screenshot of it look awesome!

The other game was some experimental thing that sounds a hundred times more interesting than goddamn soccer children. Ditched that too. How is this what they land on? It's going to be a harsh lesson for them. Meanwhile we can wait 5 years to see if they decide to make an actually good game again.

Welp, they're done.

Guess it's cool we're getting a final Darkwood update out of the deal.

Maybe it's for the best...

Tbf when you go from making DarkWood to making Soccer Kids, that's the biggest tell of something not being right at all.

It's the "we should be seeing other people" phase. Oh well, at least we got a good game from them.

Yeah. They have no duty to make hardcore games. 1 gem is enough and for that I am thankful. But we're all disappointed nonetheless. They set a damn high bar to follow, our expectations were great.

These guys have shown some amazing good sense to call it quits while they're ahead. The only bad news is this:

Darkwood works best as its own thing. It leaves you wanting more while still having a perfectly satisfying conclusion. The last thing it needs is a fucking sequel.
I wouldn't mind a "spiritual successor" with similar-ish mechanics. But a sequel? Please, God, NO!!! At best it will be more of the same (with none of the novelty of the original), at worst it will go full retard and add pointless backstory to all the things that are best kept vague and mysterious (similar to what Hotline Miami 2 did).

It basically needed an expansion pack that adds more night events and some tougher enemies that warrant using guns on.
